The Town of Addison, in Dallas County, Texas has sent out a notice to all residents concerning disaster preparedness. It basically says that residents are on their own for three days or 72 hours. The six basic areas a resident is responsible for are: Water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies and special items. The Town's priorities fire and police response to life threatening injueris, critical infastructure such as sewage and water services, opening roads.
They then advise all residents to put together a "72-Hour Kit" and they attach a brochure listing such things as 1 gallon of water per person per day, food items, a detailed listing of first aid kit gear, prescription medications/eye wear, important family documents, and entertainment, tools & supplies. The supplies include stuff like flash lights, pliers, duct tape, bleach, compass, signal flare, aluminum foil, tent or "other portable structure". There is much more, but you get the jist.
The letter includes this paragraph: "In today's advanced society, there are greater chances to be involved in a disaster either natural or manmade. Both the Town of Addison and its residents have an obligation to prepare for such occurrences. While we all hope that such occurences do not happen, preparedness is the key to successfully handling such emergencies."
