The Town of Addison, in Dallas County, Texas has sent out a notice to all residents concerning disaster preparedness. It basically says that residents are on their own for three days or 72 hours. The six basic areas a resident is responsible for are: Water, food, first aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies and special items. The Town's priorities fire and police response to life threatening injueris, critical infastructure such as sewage and water services, opening roads.

They then advise all residents to put together a "72-Hour Kit" and they attach a brochure listing such things as 1 gallon of water per person per day, food items, a detailed listing of first aid kit gear, prescription medications/eye wear, important family documents, and entertainment, tools & supplies. The supplies include stuff like flash lights, pliers, duct tape, bleach, compass, signal flare, aluminum foil, tent or "other portable structure". There is much more, but you get the jist.

The letter includes this paragraph: "In today's advanced society, there are greater chances to be involved in a disaster either natural or manmade. Both the Town of Addison and its residents have an obligation to prepare for such occurrences. While we all hope that such occurences do not happen, preparedness is the key to successfully handling such emergencies."

So there we have it. The Town of Addison, in Texas has told me I am on my own for three days. And I actually have a signal flare.

Good post CC. I've been getting my mother's dental work done and her two new pair of glasses over the past couple of weeks. Cars repaired, stocking up on meds, water PURIFIER, etc. Between PCViking and Dutch et allia I have really been dedicating my resources to the TOP Priorites. I need a better BOB so please if anyone can post a good list I would be grateful. Hey Dennis, you're suposed to be on Vacation.:) :chg: Have a cold one on me.

This is not related to the ice storm, rather it references katrina and basically says "Hey, the local authorities could not help them and we can't help you". Very interesting as it IS always three days.

I wish ALL towns across America would put out this letter to their residents. They'd take it more seriously than just seeing the billboards or hearing it on TV, if they're even paying attention.

Sure would make life a bit easier for those of us who ARE prepared.

Sounds like they're expecting something now doesn't it?

Sigh.

Whenever someone in government takes even a tiny step toward doing the right thing, someone always tries to figure out the ulterior motive.

I don't trust government very much, but maybe someone in government actually rubbed a couple of brain cells together.

Would everyone feel better if they announced, "please do not prepare for disasters in any way. Your government will always be there to help."

Heya Brewer...

I posted this on another thread, but I am happy to do it again for you. I have been studying/teaching survival and prep for 15 years now and am looking at long term BOB's. Mine (except for food and clothing) is listed at the following link. If you have any special questions and don't want to ask them here I would be happy to have you PM me.

Hope it helps...

Bravo....It's a small step in the right direction but it's a step. A century ago there was no infrastructure like today and you and your neighbors either did for yourselves or you either lived or died without.

They will never say longer that 3 days but what they should say is to prepare for at least a month or longer to be totally self sufficent. Will the residents along the gulf coast ever again think that FEMA will magically come riding over the horizon with food, medical, trailers...everything you need?? I don't think so but then again many sheeple have a short memory.

And it's not just gulf coast or west coast that need to prepare either. A story today hit the wires about the winter storm that smashed through the midwest has left 150,000 people in Canada without power with subzero temps knocking at the door. The furnace don't work without juice folks.....Many are going to find out the hard way that you need to be sufficent on your own....come what may.

But it's at least good news to see even a few cities start to warn their residents. Public "servants" should tell the people what they need to hear....not what they want to hear.

Yep, it's kind of direct don't you think?

It's long overdue, Fuzzy! Cities have been putting this off and I think that Katrina made a lot of them sit up and take notice.

Sounds like a Mayor that is doing what he/she should be doing after the lesson of Katrina.

It is very frustrating that most will not prep because they live subterranean lifestyles. What do I mean by that? Drugs, ignorance and head firmly placed up the buckeye! To many like that these days to have confidence in the outcome.

Clark County did this last year. In addition to radio and TV commercials they mailed a booklet to every household. Many people I know actually listened and did a few things but I encouraged them to go above and beyond. Most people do not know I am a prepper (or at least not to the extent I am) but appreciated the information I had to offer. Many of them thought something was about to happen. I said, it does not hurt to be prepared for any situation.

A gallon a day is barely sustience level of water, 3 would be more like it.

And 5-6 For bathing and high activity replenishment. Don't forget about the pets, too.

uh so what?

In earthquake country it's been publically stated by local governments "Your on your own for 72 hours" for more than 30 years.

After Katrina many local governments upped that 72 hrs to a week of preps and 3 gals of water per person per day AND some are now suggesting a Bug-out-bag be added to the preps. Again as a response to Katrina's evac problems.

With San Francisco particularly vunerable to quakes, the City OES named their prep site http://www.72hours.org/

I don't git it. Is it just because it's hot and humid in the south? I barely drink a full glass of water a day. I keep trying to drink more water, but I forget. I don't see how I can drink a gallon a day, much less 3! :shr:

Well, good for them. It's at the local level that these warnings can have an impact. If people see that their neighbors are prepping along with them, it won't be just the "kooks" doing it.

And three days is a whole lot better than nothing.

I wish they'd drop that idiotic 72 Hour figure

It's SOOO misleading. The sheep think that means everything will be okay in 3 days....that that's how long it will take the city services to get up and running again. It's really just the (very bad) estimate of how long it will take FEMA and the Red Cross to get there and start administering aid. As WE all know, that's just nuts.

Responsible cities will add a disclaimer and suggest that families stock more goods if they intend to remain on their own!

It's not all for drinking Gillman. Cooking, washing, etc. We go through a tremendous amount of water and because we have reliable sources, we don't have a very good idea regarding how much we use. I do know that I personally can actually drink a gallon of water a day because I've "trained" to do it. I think if you're in the South you should look at larger quantities because it is hotter than Hades here. HOWEVER, I've been to NY City in the summer and it's hotter than Hades THERE! So there you have it. I think we're living in Hades anyway and everyone should increase their water stores accordingly... So tell, me, how much water does Satan recommend we store? Surely he is for helping the people... I seem to remember him running on that platform.

Addison is a greatplace to live and the government is excellent. The city council and mayor are all folks who live in this small twon within the larger Dallas County. Two of my neighbors are former councilmen or mayors. The city services are excellent and I love living here. I think that the Town wants folks to get ready so if something happens, they will not take heat over a lack of respnse if someone needs something. THere are very few people who actually live here in Addison, maybe only 15000. My big concern are all of those folks outsie Addison, in Dallas or the County who might come here if things got bad.

This letter is a Town government just doing its job, IMO.

Gill, the only thing I can suggest is that you do a "dry run" of your preps one weekend and store only a gallon of water per person involved. Or (as we did) go camping and carry one gallon of water per person involved per day you go. I think you'll be surprised (I know *WE* were!) at how much water you go thru. Drinking is only a small part - then there's cooking and washing, then mixing up other drinks like tea or koolaid, then bathing. Lots of need for water when you start really looking at it.

Good point. This is the approach I take. I look at prepping as sorta like going camping.

I had not giving it much thought until just this moment, but I suppose I am lucky. yes I have a tent (I think some how I got 2 more...) I have a few tarps. I have tools. I've camping open air (no tent), and enjoy camping.

While I have tent and tarps,.. I know basics of making debris huts,.. made a few as a kid looking back.. (wow,.. talk about memories!! Cool!) It would be a little work,.. but I have a site in which isn't all that far from my home, or other resourses that I can get to and setup. There is nothing there now, but trees.. but with that,.. you have about all you need. There would be hunting and fishing close around too..

Like your tag suggests... Don't Prep to outlast,.. prep to not notice. There is alot that you can do to prepare, but not overwhelm yourself with..

But having the extra, only means that you have that much less to worry with.

Now,.. I should do something about water... I have drinks,.. but not enough water,.. though I know of ways to get it...

Cheers,.. time to go watch the snow.
