As car thefts have spiked in Toronto, Canada, local police are prescribing new safety measures so that locals can avoid violent encounters with thieves.

One of the recent bits of advice included Toronto Police telling residents of the town of Etobicoke to leave their car key fobs near the door to avoid being attacked in their homes by potential burglars.

According to police, the number of car thefts in the city has more than doubled in recent years. In 2023, more than 12,000 vehicles were reported stolen. In 2019, just over 5,000 were reported stolen.

Thieves have begun breaking into houses to steal keys in order to steal cars, prompting controversial prevention advice from Toronto Police Constable Marco Ricciardi at an Etobicoke town hall last month, according to City News.

During the town hall, Ricciardi advised that residents leave their car keys near the front doors of their houses so that they do not have to confront violent criminals, who he noted often have "real guns."

He said at the Feb. 27 meeting, "To prevent the possibility of being attacked in your home, leave your FOBs at your front door. Because they’re breaking into your home to steal your car. They don’t want anything else."

"A lot of them that they’re arresting have guns on them. And they’re not toy guns, they’re real guns. They’re loaded," he added.

Toronto Police sent out a memo clarifying these comments on March 13. The memo, published on the official Toronto Police Service website, also provided additional "Home

Our world is literally surpassing Idiocracy in the stupidity race.

Constable Riciarrdi should have been ridiculed and cursed off the stage for those tidbits of unhelpful stupidity.

Real question: Is telling someone how dumb their statements sound considered assault?

Oh that's right, it might get you life in prison in Canada someday soon...

The world is being inundated with stupid leaders.
They only understand stupid.
They can't understand why everyone doesn't agree with them,
after all, they are from the government and are only trying to help.

It would appear this police constable don't want to do his job.
There's a lot of that going around right now.

Why do cars need a key then? Just build cars with a starter button. Better yet, just set up a spare bed room for the burglar, so they can move in. Buy an extra car they can use when they want to go out on the town. Be sure to top off the gas tank, so they make it back home when they feel like catching some sleep after a long night out doing what burglars do.

Don't give the demoncrats any ideas.

CA, and CO (?) are already wanting home owners to house illegals. This will make them think win-win.

So this lunatic is admitting that - despite strict Canadian gun laws - that the criminals have not given up theirs.

Just the law abiding citizens have given up their guns, per the law….

What better support for our Second Amendment can you get, than this Bozo’s advice to law abiding Canadian civilians?

We - at least in Tennessee - don’t need to leave our car keys out for the criminals.

You see, with so many home owners in this red state owning “real guns” themselves, a criminal is taking considerable risk, if they decide to break into an occupied home just for the car keys…

For the record Tom Horn never killed long range. He used a short barreled 30-30 saddle gun. His MO was to wait in ambush around the homestead corrals for the father to come out for early morning chores. Job over he would quickly ride away. Extremely unlikely he murdered the 14 year old that he was hung for. The shot was made from at least 200 yards with a large caliber like a 45-70 kraig. They just needed to silence him since he new way to much.
The lesson is you nor anyone else is exempt from ambush. Especially with today’s equipment. Never know to much. The Clintons have drove that point home.

My family and I live in a suburb of Toronto, Canada in a bedroom community.
The area has gone considerably downhill in the 17 year we have lived in our home.

There have been a lot of vehicles stolen in our city and it continues to happen.
Our insurance rates are the highest in the country.
The police appear to do nothing about it except fill out police reports to provide to the insurance companies.

In the cul-de-sac where we live we know of at least 5 vehicles that have been stolen in the recent past, and this is on a street with 2 and 3 garage homes.

We haven't been affected by this. Why?

- we have cameras around our home
- we have an alarm system
- we have a video doorbell
- we have a dog and take her for walks around the neighbourhood so anyone casing the street knows we have a dog
-we have Faraday bags for our FOBs far from the front door

and most importantly:
- WE PARK OUR CARS IN THE GARAGE!!!

Too many of our neighbours fill their garages with "stuff" like their large rolling garbage and recycling boxes, snowblowers, lawn mowers and other gardening implements, bikes, kids toys, etc. so there is no room in the garages for vehicles.

I leave my garbage and recycling boxes on the side of the house. I could care less if others think it is unsightly. If thieves want to steal those, they can go nuts.

We also have a shed in the backyard where we keep our snowblower, lawn mower, bikes, snow tires, weed wackers, water hoses, and other gardening items. The shed is locked too.

People don't seem to have any problem with leaving their second most expensive assets just sitting out in their driveway.

I don't understand the way some people think.
