[Tip} How to Cook Without Glasses Etc.

I love to cook and always looked forward to those marathon pre-holiday sessions in the kitchen UNTIL I reached the age where I needed glasses to read. The damned things steamed up, slid down my nose; got splatters all over them etc. In short, it took away all the "joy of cooking".

I decided to DO something about my problem. I bought some LARGE (4"x6") index cards and a box to keep them in at the offfice supply store. Using a black felt-tipped pen, I printed each recipe on a separate card. Voila! I can stick them up on the range hood or frig with a magnet and read "bare-eyed".

Then I got another bright idea. I took a highlighter pen and marked all the ingredients which had to have something done to them before they went into the recipe---you know "1 stick butter, SOFTENED, two pkgs frozen vegetables, THAWED, 2 cups swiss cheese, GRATED etc. This saves last-minute panic as many of these recipes are only used once a year and you tend to forget.

One last thing: I took a highlighter in another color and marked all the DRY ingredients in each recipe. I can now put all the dry ingredients in first and save on wahing measuring cups and spoons.
Hope this helps someone else as much as it has me. Happy cooking!

Lady --

Thanks for the tips. I have a different problem with my glasses. They're trifocals and the lines always get in the way of reading the recipes. Usually have to double check ingredients to be sure I read them right. Never thought about sticking the recipe on the range hood with a magnet. Thanks! I'll try that.

I slip a recipe in a plastic bag so it doesn't get spattered.

Some of my cookbooks were so old and fragile so I scanned my favorite recipes, used a readable font (bolded) and put them in a binder. The tabbed index pages make it easy to find recipes in that category and find it easier to use than a storebought cookbook.

Mag Eyes work for me :D

I bought them for doing needlework. They are good in the kitchen too. Bonus is they keep the hair off your face while cooking. I have long hair & wear it pulled back but the bangs were a problem sometimes. Not with the Mag Eyes acting as a makeshift headband. :D

Can be found at most craft or fabric shops.
