The door of opportunity IS closing...your chance to stock up may already be past .

ainitfunny

Saved, to glorify God.
It may be close to being ALREADY TOO LATE TO STOCK UP.

Tonight, as I was shopping to finish filling up the freezer with chicken, I was informed at the local supermarket(Fred Meyer in WA) that from now on there was a 3 package limit to chicken purchases. They had no such sign posted. They DID NOT say you can buy 3 at the sale price and any more would be at the "regular price" as they USUALLY do when something is on sale. They just said from now on there is a 3 package limit. (But they let me check out with my purchase (considerably more) as a "last one under the line" type notification.

So, forewarned is forearmed, the door of opportunity is RAPIDLY CLOSING.

Panic Buying Clears Shelves Of Salt, Sugar and Matches In Russia

Russian people are some of the most spiritualy and phobic people in the world, I for one don't think anyone can discount what the 'gut' reaction of this countries people is telling them.

Prepare now, it may be to late tomorrow!!

Panic Buying Clears Shelves Of Salt, Sugar and Matches In Russia

Russian shelves cleared of salt by scared consumers in February

Ana sayfa Wednesday, February 22, 2006 13:14

Sights from the famine last seen when the Soviet Union was living out its final moments have returned once again to Russia. Over the last 10 days, salt has disappeared from supermarket shelves in all the major Russian cities, including Moscow. While Russians in the provinces are stocking up on salt, sugar, and matches, as though a war were about to break out, there has meanwhile been a 1kilo per person limit on salt purchases implemented in some areas. The disappearance of salt from shelves has meanwhile shocked even the authorities at the Kremlin, who years ago now embraced the rules of market economy.

In response to the massive disappearance of salt from market shelves, the Russian press began an investigation into what was going on with consumers. The only lead they could find was from an article in the beginning of February, printed in the Noviye Izvestiye newspaper, which said that Kiev was planning on raising the price of salt in response to the fact that Russia was raising the price of natural gas being sold to the Ukraine. Russia buys more than 40% of its salt from the Ukraine.

Following the printing of this article, and despite reassurances from Russian authorities that there would be no salt crisis, Russians lunged at the supermarkets, buying up all the salt they could find. Salt prices rose from 7 rubles per kilo at the beginning of February, to almost one dollar a kilo by the end of the month.

I'd suggest you top off your preps right now.............today..........this shortage might be caused by something else, who knows?

By the way, salt, sugar, and coffee are great barter items..........you should have lots of these products in your BUG OUT BAG............oh, one more thing..........the clearing out of shelves is one sign albeit a small one, that a SHTF scenario is creeping up on us.

I noticed the kroger and wally world here with limit signs out all over the stores yesterday. Not just on the usual sale items either. I thought that was kind of strange. Now when my friend, a local grocier starts limiting me, thats when I will get freaked out.:shkr:

Hi Doctor,

You left one out. Fear of Bird Flu perhaps? The Russians would stock up on those items for the duration wouldn't they, just like all of us, especially if we have to be holed up at home for a while.

Absolutely, and Bird Flu is a distinct possibility. However, I've read in the past, that panic buying of certain items is a precondition to something
big happening. The question is, do the Russians know something that we don't?
I guess the answer to this question will be known to us, if and when, we see panic buying in other countries, such as Israel.

Stock Up

This seems unlikely to me...but will keep my eyes open to the possibility when I visit the grocery later this week. Of course, to convince my DW of the need to stock up, the items would have to be missing from the shelf...which makes it too late for me anyway. Don't you just love it when they think you are good to go if there are enough groceries in the cupboard to get through until the next grocery trip in one week...:shk:

dvo..I think it would be better to be 'laughed at' than to know you had an opportunity at one point and are now in want..just my own personal opinion.

I will be doing a little shopping in the next few days. I am hoping it won't be that bad here. We'll see.

The only thing that I have shopped for in the last couple of weeks is cold and flu medicine and those isles were pretty bare. But, I think that's because so many people are getting sick right now.

I just got paid (on the 20th) :eleph: so have been topping off preps like crazy. Ordered a case each of #10 cans of freeze dried cheese and fruit from Emergency Essentials (both items backordered). Also ordered 4 more superpails of wheat and 1 of corn from Internet Grocer (we already have quite a few, but the way things are going I'm questioning whether it's enough).

One local grocery has canned veg 3/$1; another has chicken legs $.29 (last week the lowest in town was $.39). Limit 2 of the 10 lb. bags and you need to have $10 minumum purchase of other items to get the deal. My freezer is getting full with last week's chicken sales, but I keep wondering when that window of opportunity is going to close....

Going to hit Sam's club today after work to pick up bulk items like spices and baking supplies.

Sometimes I look at my full cupboards and feel better..but then I read on how much others are able to stock up on and feel so much worse.

I figure the good thing tho is that i could stand to lose 50 or so lbs, so can give myself a half ration a day, and each of my kids, and after a week or so my folks, full rations too. Not to mention trying to find a way to keep their three horses fed..to me, those will be gold on a hoof.

ON the first, I will be buying spare feed for them to last a while..it ain't that much..will freak out my Dad a bit tho, lol!

When did all this happen, overnight? I went grocery shopping three days ago. Saw no shortages or limit signs on anything.

My wife just went on the teotwawki low fat diet.
There's a lot of things she won't be going shopping for anymore. Guess I'll buy some kosher salt before it disappears. With the prices of food here its not like we lack for anything nor have I ever seen the grocery stores limit purchases, except for our meat store which seems to run out of certain cuts of beef sometimes (saving us megabucks).

It will only get worse when we finally import all our food because small farmers are pushed out of business by the globalists--this is almost done now.

Have about 6 boxes of pickling salt and 4 of table salt so will last a while but guess I could get some to barter. Sugar is down to 15 lbs so really need to stock up more on that and flour too. Just got a blender to grind grain now if I could just find some grain locally so I don't have the outragous shipping cost which is more than the grain.

Just got 6 more cans of chili but would love to keep about 25 on the shelf. chili isn't one of my favorite foods just easy to heat and eat.

I've been to Winn Dixie and Publix in the last three days and none of them were limiting purchases on any sort of meat nor did there appear to be any shortages on the shelves for common staples.

Anyone else seeing this?

My local grocery is not limiting me yet...I'm wondering though if the bigger chains are limiting things right now because there was such a run on stuff last week-end all along the NE? From that big snow storm????:screw: Maybe they are just low on stock right now from all that???

Several years ago I had 28 Arabians in our fields....I used to worry that folks would shoot them for food. I spent alot of time trying to build enough stalls to keep them out of sight; and letting them browse at night with some personal security. They would be targets for hungry people I am thinking...we put enough hay up for the year......so feeding was not a big problem....tons of grain as well. Good luck. Nice of you to think about their welfare. Mine all found good homes.

Our stores ALWAYS have limits for the really good deals. There's nothing unusual regarding the availability of grocery store items in our neck of the woods. I've been motivated to top off preps because of the world situation, not because of any local shortages. I do think there's a fast-closing window of opportunity to do so at present.

I went shopping at the local Meijer last night and didn't notice anything unusual. No limits on chicken - it was on sale and I stocked up for the freezer. Shelves were not bare except the Folgers coffee which has been thin but usually not empty since Katrina.

Question:

I have always had a large stash of salt, suger and matches....

However, when I went totally broke, I never touched the stuff. I used up all my comfort foods first, then dipped into the stews and precooked canned stuff my wife packed away.

She could have used the suger in that amount to make jellies and jams, but.....

The stuff is all cheap, but why hoard it in large quantities? Is it anti-famine staples? I mean, if you are going to cook the horse or the family dog, I suppose you would want some salt and pepper to rub on the meat....

Could someone illustrate a situation where hoarding suger, salt and matches would make a difference between life and death in the US?

The craving for salt can be pretty intense. When rebel soldiers captured Union supply wagons around Richmond, it has been written they would stand around and eat a hand full of salt. Deer will face death from a mountain lion to get to a salt lick. Then there is goiter to consider. Need iodized salt for that.

No limits here either, except on certain sale items that are usually limited because they're loss-leaders. (For example, whole chickens, $0.59/lb, limit two per customer.)

The eggs were a bit sparse, probably because they were on sale. No other shortages I could see. This was one of the stores that was out of basics during the Rita evacuations, and I believe they said the truck comes in around 1pm. It was 11:45am when we shopped, and I think the egg supply would probably have held out. The non-sale eggs were still in good supply.

On the other hand, we ate from the pantry during the month of January, and I feel a need to replenish it. No time like the present!

I can, I can! Raising hand in excitement here. ;)

I don't call it hoarding, since everything is avalable right now, but salt is a matter of life and death. A body has to have salt. Without it, you'll die.

I'm thinking the recommended amount to store is 8 lbs. per person per year. If you're doing much meat preservation or canning, you'll want more.

Matches could be real handy when it's freezing cold and you don't feel like trekking around the neighborhood with your little pan begging the neighbors to "borrow" some coals to get your fire going.

And sugar, if you're hypoglycemic, could be vital. Even if it's not vital, I can eat a lot of oatmeal with sugar, but would hate to think of facing it without a sweetener for very long. And again, if you want to preserve foods or make jams, jellies, etc. it would come in real handy. ;)

Haven't noticed limits in our area yet, but will check when we shop today and tomorrow. Hubby is good at helping, so when there are limits of items we need or wish to stock up on we both shop with separate baskets and go thru different checkouts - - - we've even been known to put our items in the car and go back and do it all over again just switching check outs!!! Buying with cash instead of check makes them notice less. We may need different ideas on how to do this if things get limited - any more ideas?

5pm. Just got back from checking several stores and found none with limits.

Splicerswife: Will try that. The only time we have done that is at Costco when we shop with friends on their card - and it has never been a problem so far!!

Some places will let you get more than the limit if you separate the items into two different orders and tell the cashier they are two separate orders. Ours even asks if you want it on a separate bill or if it should be included in the same one. Never hurts to ask.;)

No limits in our area, I probably have over 400 cans of canned chicken, along with numerous 10 cans of Freeze dried stuff and I keep the freezer filled with frozen chicken breasts as well. Just got some bags of the frozen yesterday so we are set... I make it a rule, every time I use a can from my store room, I get two more and every time I use a bag of frozen (or move it into the kitchen freezer) I pick up 2 more next day.. it builds up quickly that way.

As things pick up I may end up getting some extra canned stuff as it stores easy.

While reading all the replies as to what might be missing in preps; I was at once reminded of an interview which was conducted with a Refugee in the Kosovo troubles.

The refugee was asked what did he miss most (in the ensuing famine/no food times). He replied "Gravey" if he could have gotten gravey, he could have 'enhanced' the flavor of the foods he was able to get hold of...

Anyone think of packaged (just add water) Gravies? (I see them priced at 2 packages for $1.00....)

I have not noticed any limits here either. Sometimes they have a special running and they might limit you but then I just come back later and use my moms card (if it is a store that uses a card). When the Progresso's were on sale 4/$5 I bought about 40 of them -no problem. The only other time I've seen anything odd is with the coffee right after Katrina.

Now I will definitely start checking closer...
