Hard to even imagine...but considering the coddled, no-fault society of today, I guess it really shouldn't be so hard. :shk:

Teen charged in attack on parents
Laurel girl pulled knives after having her cell phone taken away, police say

By IRA PORTER • The News Journal • January 26, 2009

A 16-year-old Laurel girl threatened her parents with two large kitchen knives early Sunday after her father confiscated her cell phone.

The frightened parents retreated into their bedroom and locked the door, then called police. It took officers about 10 minutes to calm the girl and persuade her to put down the knives, Delaware State Police said.

"I can't comment on the state of mind of the juvenile, but this is one extreme example of a teenager having something as little as her phone taken away from her and how it affected her emotionally," said Cpl. Bruce Harris.

State police said they were called to the home in the 11000 block of Sandy Ridge Drive at about 3 a.m.

Police said the girl's father heard her talking on the phone in her bedroom, and knew that there were no minutes left on her phone.

He said he suspected the girl had stolen money from her mother's purse earlier in the day to purchase minutes on a prepaid card, Harris said.

After the father took the phone from the girl, she became angry, grabbed two large kitchen knives and threatened her parents, police said.

The parents locked themselves in a bedroom and called police. Police said the teen violently attacked the door.

Police responded and talked the girl into putting the knives down after 10 minutes of negotiating. She was charged with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, two counts of aggravated menacing, terroristic threatening, disorderly conduct, theft, criminal mischief and possession of a deadly weapon by a person prohibited.

She was committed to Stevenson House after failing to pay $14,000 secured bond.

Teen girls ARE pretty damn attached to their cell phones. I don't think I would get between the two (and I carry a GLOCK).

Just wait till the rest of the entitlement crowd starts to realize that their "free" lifestyle days are over. And they will be a LOT more militant than this little girl, especially given the new "change" in circumstances.

It would have taken the cops 10 minutes to pull my parents off of me had I tried something like that. I cannot fathom this.

She needs/needed a good trip to the woodshed but alas, it's too late for that now. Parents would likely end up in jail and with a record if they even spanked her in this era.

You and me, both, BT.:sht:

Someone should send these clueless folks a pull-top can full of parental whuppass with that girl-child's name on it. :shkr:

In this day, phones CAN be vital for safety, but this child needs that phone to be traded in on a tightly supervised restriction with chores and accountability. Come to think of it, parents who allow things to get this far out of hand probably need some of the same.

I give up.
She stole money from her mother's purse? I can't even imagine what my parents would have done if I had dared do that. But it would have been real bad. Real bad.

Sometimes kids need a good beating, just to learn the error of their ways. I've got plenty of switches up here. But then some bleeding heart will say taken a switch to a brats backside is somehow abusesive. :screw:

If I were the parent I would be in jail. These parents better not sleep unless their door is locked. That kid REALLY needs to be in jail.

And a teenage girl is FAR MORE dangerous than a pitbull. I'm surprised they didn't shoot her.

If that was my duaghter she would have eaten those knives, figuratively speaking of course!

It would fall under justifiable homicide had she actually lunged and attacked the parents.

P.S. I have no sense of humor.

Parents, don't give your kid or teenager a cell phone of their own to keep. Keep a cell phone locked in a safe and only give it to them if they are going on a sleepover or with a friend. When they get back retrieve the phone from them.

Perhaps a spanking or two when she was growing up would have taught her there are consequences to her actions. After growing up is when children pay for their parents failures.

Even better would be to get her one of the phones that only can call 4 different people (no number buttons, just 4 autodial buttons, a "talk" button, and an "end" button". This way she can call home, the police, someone else in the family, and ONE FRIEND. Oh, and there is no text messaging.

If she wants text messaging, give her a walkie talkie with a morse code button.

I am the kina guy that believes in fair punishment, where I would go no further then an open handed swat on the behind, BUT, If this wa my child, she would be begging for the cops to take her away. I would not put up with that for one moment! That is a butt beating with a stich that will not end! She would be lucky to ever be able to sit down, ever! Then her sore butt would go to military school, and I hate to have to do something like that, but in this case I would. Though if I was the parent I doubt it would have happened. For that fact her attitude would have been nipped a long time ago.

Lesson here, never come between a teen girl and her phone! If that were my kid, that would be the end of her phone.

Yup! I was actually a good teenager, I didn't get an attitude till I was 18, but then it was with my dad, and I never pulled a knife on him, no matter how much he may anger me. The only time you ever pull a weapon on a person is if they are attacking you. It's not just the guys that are mean these days.

This case also proves the point that its not guns who kill people. No gun? Fine. Just go for a knife then (or two). What? No knives? Let's see then ... there must be something else around here ... OK ... let's break a bottle and use the glass! Its not the guns, its the people who kill other people if they are in the mind for mayhem. I realize she didn't kill anyone in this case, but it easily could have gone there. (OK ... rant off).

In the words of the late Heath Ledger in the "Dark Knight", "Wanna see a magic trick?" After killing a guy with a pencil. But what it boils down to, is the kid most likely wasn't raised right, most likely. There is this one girl I went to school with who is Bi Polar, but even when she is happy, she is still whiny. To the point where ya think if only I had some duct tape. One day I asked her, "Just out of curousity, when you were growing up, did your parents ever spank you?" She said, "Only twice, but it was light and I hardly felt it, why?" I said "Just asking..." I mean I am sure a lot of it was form her condition, but a lot of it could have been helped. She was to the point where ya had say, "Grow the heck up already." When I feel that way, it has to be bad. Point is, spare the rod, spoil the child.

IMO we havve not heard the last of this 16 year old female. If she survives she will be able to vote in less than two years, unless she is in jail or the morgue. A teenager with a cell phone should have some restrictions on its use. If a teen wants "texting" they should pay for it. remember the teen with14K text messages in a month and a bill over 400 pages long?

If I had raised a hand against my parents I would have drawn back a stump. These parents will never have any order in their home now that they have capitulated to their teen.

Thankfully our kids never had cell phones with the exception of the youngest who was 14 years younger. IIRC he paid fo his own phone. He had a pager that he won when we were visiting my dad near Walla Walla, Washington. At a street fair he answered a geiography question and one a years use of a pager. That was his intro into the field of ersonal communications. No all of the kids deal with cell phomes, laptops amd SKYPE.

Keep your eyes on the girl in Delaware. She will surely be in the news again.

This is why every night I go to work, (overnights at Mcdonalds) I complain about parents. I am always saying, "These guys need to go back home and ask their parents for some spankings, because I am getting sick of their spoiled attitude." And I am talking the whole entitled attitude. Though I don't say this to the customers, I always say, "I ain't Obama, it's not my job to give handouts! I am not a lib, go mooch somewhere else!" Same basic attitude. This is why our leaders are so messed up. The parents don't raise them right, (most of the time) and then we get stuck with their failure as parents. In this case, it blew up in the parent's face.

My son took a summer off to spend at military school. Mind you, he wasn't a bad kid....and I wasn't going to let him become one. Three years later, he would be the first to say it was the best thing for us to do.

The sixteen year old is simply a product of her environment - it doesn't sound like there's a lot of love and respect for each other in that family. That said, a bi-polar fourteen-year-old may overstep boundaries like that, but sixteen is too old for the outrageoous behavior described here.

Yep. She'll be a headline.

The kids go to school where discipline is forbidden, kids call (and do) report to authorities if the parents raise their hands to discipline and CPS takes them away. What we're seeing today is the consequence.

My granddaughter is like this young girl although not as bad. She learned early how to manipulate her mother (DIL). Now, even though discipline is attempted, it ends up being a joke. I knew this was going to happen.

Giving kids a cell phone, while touted as a 'safety precaution', is nonsense. Of course if discipline was used all along it wouldn't be such an issue.

There two things that no kid of mine would ever have unless they got a job and paid for it:

1. Car
2. Cell phone

I see elementary school kids with cell phones. I think that's nuckin' futs.

It would have taken my street brawler dad 30 seconds to take the knives away from me (a minute if he wanted to be careful with me) if I were to somehow become so brain addled as to go up against him....

The PUNISHMENT would have been grounding and a quiet explanation of how much of a disappointment this was.

That quiet explanation was, by the time my brothers or I were 14, more punishment than any number of whacks ANYWHERE on one's body.

But I grew up with Depression Era parents...."Jump" "...high enough??" on the way up.
they conditioned us with no more than a dozen early spankings... It was enough....

I was born in 1950. The only phone we had was a big black rotary dial phone and it had a party line we shared with others.

How in the world did we survive without cell phones?

Why do we think our kids need all these things when they obviously can't afford to purchase them or pay the bills on them.

We do not own a cell phone. When hubby retired a year ago he got rid of his. We found out that you do NOT have to be connected to a phone 24/7.

If I had a child threaten my life with a weapon, I would be packing my things and renting a U-haul and moving far away where that kid would never find me again. The state could keep her.
