During a recent trip through very rural areas along the Ohio River, I tested wi-fi access. Not the kind you pay for (like web surfing on your phone), but where you might find free wi-fi on the road. It was surprisingly simple. I found it near a library (in the parking lot), under a shady tree in a car outside businesses, and, of course, in a library (free when given access code from librarian). I found it everywhere, really. This is not something you would necessarily have to pay for. There are many unsecured wireless spots. I didn't even have to go in a coffee shop to use wi-fi.

I was using an iPod Touch.

Free wifi access is in a lot of places, now. Traveling across Texas, even most of the rest areas have free access, even most of the What-a-burger joints in the area offer free access.

What you want to get is the Alfa 500 wifi adapter. Longest range device I know of.

It's almost stupidly simple to "pirate" Wi-fi off of people's networks. Operative word here is STUPID. When I "sniff" for Wi-fi in my neighborhood, well over half of their networks are open and unencrypted. I could literally park across the street and have Net access via their stupidity.

Well some of us do it deliberately. I put a much better gain aerial on my ADSL router/modem, so that a strong signal can be had across the road and into a little pull in field entrance alongside.

Locals and visitors are more than welcome to make use of the bandwidth.

I consider it a service to the Community. :vik:
