TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) clarified its definition of “first strike,” saying it considered any Chinese military asset crossing into Taiwan’s territorial borders as an act of aggression.

The MND said in a press release Friday (March 8) that if enemy aircraft or vessels intruded into Taiwan’s airspace or waters, then commanders are authorized to take appropriate measures to maintain national defense security when all other non-peaceful means fail. When a country is subjected to armed attacks from external sources, it has the inherent right to use force for self-defense, the ministry said.

Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) said that this definition was updated shortly after former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan — when China held live-fire military drills around the nation to express its dissatisfaction.

The Taiwan Strait is "on the brink" of a heightened level of alert, Chiu said at a Foreign and National Defense Committee session on Thursday (March 7). The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has ramped up the frequency of its air and naval operations. He said PLA activities are now creeping closer to Taiwan and have slowly entered "gray areas" from the north and south.

To deter China from escalating tensions in the strait, U.S. senators introduced a bill on Tuesday (March 5) requiring the U.S. Department of the Treasury to terminate the United States-People's Republic of China Income Tax Convention if Beijing attacks Taiwan.

Must be nice to be one of the many countries that can invest in improving their economy while expecting the American taxpayers and military to provide their defense.

All while Americas economy and standards of living fall.

Who will take care of them when our corrupt politicians succeed in collapsing America both economically and socially?

Yes, only 3 days after super Tuesday showed that Pres. Trump would be the nominee and likely president again next January. If China is going to do anything near term regarding Taiwan, the starter pistol just went off.

this is what I find most fascinating about this continuing saga >>> coming down to the wire - it was an open door for 3 years and China did nothing >>>

China will need to pray to the Biden Gods to keep Trump out of the Oval Office - keep his chosen successor from serving his 8 years and hope that current history holds and the US flips back DNC after 12 years of GOP ....

the way China is going - not sure the Commie stranglehold is going to hold for 12 more years ......

This news is Not new.
It's been status quo like this since the beginning.
It's like saying beforehand that ROC air force never existed.
So, a nothing burger.

This statement puts things on a footing more akin to 1958 than 1996 to now.

That being said, any action by the CCP as a prelude to an invasion of Taiwan has to be assumed to include strikes against US and allied regional bases including the US west coast involving nuclear weapons.

A big question now with this change in Taiwanese posture is whether or not they, as well as Japan and South Korea, have broken the glass on the cabinets with the "golden screw drivers"?

If it appears Trump will win, China will strike prior to November to maximize the weak response

After last night's "performance", someone "slipping the bath" shouldn't be discounted as a means of changing the domestic and international dynamics.

You know about the Kinmen boating incident where ROC Coast Guard "rammed" a Chinese "fishing boat", where 2 "fishermen" died? it happened early February.
China had all the reason to go hard-core on retaliation.
Did it? No.

in fact, China keeping it out of its domestic news so that citizens don't get riled up.

Again, this thread's article is a nothing burger. Just click bait

I do get the feeling that somwthing will break soon. Xi is known to want reunification to happen on his watch, and he ain't getting any younger.

Look at all the stuff that comes from over there that you own and use. Get spares and extras if you can. Not just from China but most of the Pacific. Anything that says made in the USA with global components has stuff from China. Most of our domestic industry relies on tools and manufacturing equipment either from there or with components from there

Sad, muse...

Because of government taxation, regulations and never ending mandates, most of our manufacturing was sent to the south, and far east.

Just sad.

I don't think that china would go nuclear right off the bat if they moved on taiwan
they probably have enough players on american soil to cause A LOT of problems that would occupy a great deal of attention and resources
If they do decide to go nuclear they better know where the boomers are -(if our "leaders" have the stones to retaliate in kind)

The longer they wait, the more Chinese affiliated illegals arrive, take up residence and resources here and have more time to get oriented to the lay of the land. Between our own “liberals” (hormonally, emotionally, and intellectually handicapped), the mexican cartels, and the Chinese fifth column, the country virtually no longer exists and WILL no longer exist if someone like Trump doesn’t resume the reins. Perhaps something resembling America might exist after the fighting, but the surviving population will be so small and crippled that they will be non-existent on the world stage.

More than 5 years old, but still very much worth a read.
Much of the information found therein is still relevant.
Always nice to see you; unfortunately, the article is subscribers only.
I recall posting some background articles on the "big korea-taiwan threads" discussing the geographical impediments and political sentiments that worked against the odds of a successful invasion; presumably they are still in effect.
..although China's been building those islands, and modifying their fishing vessles (?), so perhaps there is enough mitigation of barriers that the calculus has begun to change :: shrug ::

I do get the feeling that somwthing will break soon. Xi is known to want reunification to happen on his watch, and he ain't getting any younger.
..and perhaps as important, there are "others" who also seem very interested in seeing that theatre opened up for the business o' war : (

I beg to differ with your mischaracterization.

The ministry of defense of Tiawan met a scant few days ago, and this clarification of position paper was released at that time. Now, their intent in doing so may have been merely to restate their prior position for the geopolitical message it sent, but that the sending of such messages lies at the heart o' the geopolitical dance is, presumably, understood to be "how those things work"

That the country's paper covered it was reasonable and expected, and indeed the whole point of it, I would guess, and that we'd follow suit and make note of it is also totally unremarkable.

Definitely does not fit any definition of clickbait.

We hope it all does prove to be a nothing burger, but watching the rapidly shifting balance of power in that area of the world, and the number of countries that are changing their stances domestically to allow for increasingly lethal capabilities and responses, there are compelling reasons to be alert to the possibilities of something going south in a big bright and loud way there.

Odd. I'm not a subscriber, and I can read the entire article just fine.
