Suspicious devices found on power lines in Massachusetts

TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. – Devices that authorities say looked like pipe bombs but were not explosive have been found hanging from power lines in Massachusetts.

Harold Shaw, special agent in charge of the Boston FBI division, says the devices were found Wednesday when the Tyngsborough Fire Department responded to a brush fire. Shaw says crews noticed the items and alerted National Grid. The power company then alerted law enforcement.

Shaw says multiple incendiary devices "similar in structure to pipe bombs" were found on the lines.

The FBI said Thursday the devices didn't have the components necessary to cause an explosion.

Shaw says at this point there is no evidence tying the devices to terrorism and that law enforcement agencies and utility companies across the country have been notified.

Time testing....
Response testing....

Possibly delivery testing. Not sure how they were placed or what they looked like but I envisioned a couple pipe sections linked and thrown over the wires. Getting a heavy package up there could be tricky.

I'd like to know the cause of the brush fire.

Was it a test of time delayed "incendiary devices"?

This doesn't mean they were not an "attempt" at an explosive device. The builder may have screwed up the assembly process, and produced incindiary rather than explosive.

blowing the wire would take a lot more to fix, and longer than a short,

one could shoot them with a compressed air/gas gun simular to a potato gun or a pumpkin cannon, if to high to throw by hand,

or depending on the weight of them a drone helicopter.

How do they get them on without getting electrocuted?

If you have a couple of pipe-bomb like devices that are connected by a short weather (string or light chain), they can easily be tossed over a wire. The bolo-effect as they spin up from the tosser improves the likelihood that they'll snag on a wire. Like worn-out sneakers.

If your intent is to cut the wire, you should include a fuse, some charge perhaps.

It does not take much for an arc discharge. I remember years ago at a former workplace. There were high tension lines next to railroad tracks right in back of the building I worked at. One time a utility worker was high up on a basket and something went wrong. He got zapped and fell out of the basket. I heard he was charred black like an over cooked steak.

I think I'm cooking vegetarian tonight . . .

OT I guess, but you all do know that sneakers over a wire mean there is a drug dealer at that location, right?

That's what my kids told me about the sneakers over a wire up high back in the 80s. Still goes as drug advertisement to this day in this area.

I heard about that being the meaning many years ago, as well. But, still see that. You'd think the LEOs would have caught onto that a long time ago.
