HEALTH Stress relief suggestions.

It seems that things are getting a little too stressful both on the board and in real life for many. It might be a good thing to make some suggestions for how to relieve some of that pent up anxiety.

Please don't be vague. Don't post something like "Meditate". What does meditate mean to you? How do you do it? Do you stare at a candle in a dark room? Listen to someone's recorded meditation guide? Get into a sitting lotus and contemplate inner energy? Do you go to the range and concentrate on making all the black in the center of concentric circles disappear? Please be a little specific.

As a family we:
1) Have a family fun night or day. As a special treat it might be a movie out or a trip to a place selling really good homemade ice cream. Most often it involves a board game and fresh popped pop corn or pizza.

2) Family movie night. We pop corn and pick a movie to watch on the TV.

3) RAK - a random act of kindness. Anyone in the family can propose one. The rules are fluid. We look for a need in our community or elsewhere that we can aid. If does not always have to be close to home. One RAC was The Heifer Project. I think we provided some chickens and ducks or a goat. Sometimes little things can have a big impact. This gets all members involved in decision making, value sharing and off the video games.

4) Church. The ritual it's self can be a comfort. Then message can provide healing, comfort and guidance.

5) Prepping. It wasn't until there was a little extra in the pantry and emergency supplies ready if needed that I realized not having them was a stress.

I have found martial arts to be a huge stress reducer. Something therapeutic in having an excuse to hit and kick things.

Massage works wonders too, and the occasional siesta.

Work out / exercise 4 - 6 times a week
Get your heart rate up to about 120 and keep it there for 20 minutes

Work or walk it off. (And this from the guy who HATES exercise!)
-- Take a stroll, look around & admire Creation.

We had a bunch of field problems at work. My stomach began tightening up to a point it was painful. I started breathing deeply using my diaphragm. It helped.
-- A similar effect may be had from belly-laughs. (Mondegreens do it for me.)

Visualizing may help. My 'spot' is a grassy valley with two sets of forests. No people, no animals (unless they are in the woods), no vehicles. Just valley, trees, grass, and warm sun. I may need to add some water to it!! :D

Grab a .22 cal rifle and go to some secluded dump site and blast away at it and you'll feel 100% better.

RiJo, you're funny!!!

Me? I take a nice warm shower. And no, I'm not going to stop drinking ice coffee. I'm in a daze anyway because my birth-mother died this weekend and I've had to meet a ton of people I never knew existed.

If I had something to "puff" on ;) then I'd relax that way. but I don't. - So I think after my shower, I'll go outside to this cemetary I know - where everything is quiet except the animals and play with them for a bit.

I'd eat, but I don't feel like it. Usually something Italian makes me feel much better :D

I could clean, but that doesn't make me feel better.

Sometimes, I sit and think about the first time I saw DH - he was walking toward me, the setting sun behind him and I was so excited, I just suddenly knew he was "the one." So thinking about things that made you smile in the past (or present) helps me a lot.

Well, Old Gray Mare, those are my suggestions for now - I'll probably be back :eye:

My absolute favorite stress reducer is roaming around in the swamp, no matter what season.

The stately trees are grounding and supportive. Windsong and birdsong are music to my soul. The pools and puddles support life. There is always something new to discover, animal or plant. Springtime is especially awe inspiring. The explosion of new life melts away all worries and cares as it envelopes me in Creation. I drop my burdens, like a big old sack and say, “it’s me again, Lord. Guess what?”

I find a log or stump, sit for a while and give thanks. (Lots and lots of thanks). The world may be going to pot, but right now, right here in this space, my Creator fills my soul with perfect love, peace and beauty. I’m pretty sure he expects for me to go out and do likewise. It was a gift after all.

Okay, I’ll stop now. Forgot I was on MAIN.

Interesting timing, as a fire chaplain in training, I just went to a critical incident stress management class! The MOST important thing is to talk about it and don't ignore it. Second most important is be a good listener, accept that people will feel differently about events so accept those feelings as normal. Isolation is a sentence worse than death and telling someone that feeling that way is not ok isolates them. Try to help people find linkages, ie. someone may feel so strongly about an event because they saw their dad kick the dog when they were a kid and those feelings were repressed at the time, but are now coming backup.

Be blessed!

Aside from Old Gray Mare's excellent suggestions, I was told by a friend whose son was left in a coma for months after a freak motorcycle accident, that to lift the spirits and to zero in on what really matters in this life I should focus on people who have it far, FAR worse than I do. She said to make it a point to FIRST give thanks to God and to praise Him for his faithfulness and mercy to me in past days before I pray and ask Him for anything.
We try to take long walks along the beach at least a few times a month, walk through National parks like Cypress on the Bruce Peninsula, or just indulge in the simple pleasures of observing God's wondrous creation in local gardens/parks. Whenever depression comes at me I have to make a conscious effort to refocus on what I DO have rather than on what I DON'T. Satan consistently tries to focus us on what we lack and get our eyes off of what blessings we do enjoy.

Something else that has really helped me through the years is to read inspiring stories of the great heroes of the faith-people like Corrie ten Boom. Amazing, to come to the point where you can thank God for such circumstances. One statement she made that has stayed with me for years is that God gave her the grace she needed right when she needed it and not a moment too soon or too late.

Where is Helen when we need her? :)

I was wondering when someone would suggest Helen's creed of "dropping my panties", lol.....

Panic Sex!!!!!!!!!! Multiple times if needed.

Oh Helen......

I can also highly recommend getting a copy of the dvd Tremors with all for movies on it. 1 thru 4.
If Bert can't get you laughing, then I give up.
I just love the a$$ blasters name....lol:p

Physical labor (cleaning the barn, mucking out the chicken coop, planting tree's, tilling new garden space and the ever popular splitting and stacking fire wood) followed by a good dinner, a favorite tv show and, of course, panic sex!!

Yin Yoga

I've been doing yoga with a coworker at lunch for several months now. We tried yin yoga for the first time today and I felt like I had had a massage afterwards. I was very loose and relaxed. To me, it was much more enjoyable than yang yoga, which has some hard poses (asanas) that can get you sweating. We did a shortened version since we have less that 30 minutes. We held each pose for 2 minutes. Here's a link that explains it.

Benefits of Yin Yoga
Yin yoga improves the body in a variety of ways. These may include:

Feeling calm and balanced
Regulated energy levels (chi)
Greater strength
Improved health
Stress levels lowered
Greater stamina
Flexibility of the body’s connective tissues and joints
Slowed signs of aging
Improved meditation
Deeper relaxation
Improved practice of yang yoga

On Saturday I make a pan of home made (FROM SCRATCH!!) brownies and we watch a mystery movie. The "Father Brown" series from the BBC was REALLY good.. Well written and well played by the main character.

We are now on the "Inspector Linley" series. Pretty good. I need to get more into it.

Plus... I have my "other" life where I play someone who cares about humanity. Don't ask... it'll just confuse you.

For me, I need to get away from the broadcast media. Turn off the tv. Quiet is healing.

And I really like the swamp idea, except I lack the necessary swamp.

Music is another outlet for my stress. But it has to be classical/baroque type music. No contemp rock/rap/HM stuff.

regards,

Garryowen

yup a good afternoon of shooting works for me.

Also working out, I find that when I stick to running every AM for 20 mins I am much less stressed.

A little trick I learned when my father was getting into using hypnosis for nervous dental patients.. breathing.

You breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. I can slow down my heart rate so quickly just doing this. I think it has something to do with taking in too much o2 ever so slightly and its calming effect.

I laugh. Whenever I get stressed, I go to youtube and find funny videos or search Google for funny pictures. Like this:

Suggestions (things that work for us)

Shooting is fun, also afterwards we often stop at a Waffle House near the park where we go shooting.
Walking - I needed to start walking (alot) due to complications from steriods, so now I'm in alot better shape and find (again) how enjoyable it is.
Family bad movie nights. We go looking for really, really bad movies and everyone settles down and enjoys/heckles the movie. Last week was MegaPirana. LOTS to heckle in that one.
Wife goes combing for beach glass (I sit and read or listen to music and watch the water).
DW finds gardening relaxing, me I garden because i want to eat.
Also from DW enjoys bubble baths, or slapping the **** out of whoever is the cause of the stress (or at least thinking about it).

For me I de-stress by playing softball, volunteering at the local fire house, and just enjoying God's wonderful creation.

There are a few things I do to destress:
~ a hot shower
~ making a point to sleep a bit more-- when my body gets tired and stressed, I tend to get sick, so I make a point to get extra sleep
~ laugh with a good friend
~ journal (I have just started this again and am surprised at how much I missed it-- I also focus on my "gratitudes" in it)
~ Exercise!!!
~ spend time with my dogs (the epitome of unconditional love!)
~ play a game or do something with my boys-- always puts things in perspective
~ pray and ask God to help me through whatever it is I am going through

I have a 100lb bag in the basement that I use for such occasions. Lately, I have been at it at least twice a day.

Great Great Grandma!
All my life I've had this little inner voice that tells me, "worrying and stressing is counterproductive." Any time I get stressed out, I remind myself that I need to take 3 deep breaths, then calmly think about solutions, not stress over something that might or might not happen. It's always worked for me.

Another stress relief I've discovered is reloading.
It exercises your mind and body.
I have a single stage hand press and it's gonna build up my upper body strength in no time!!
You have to pay attention to what you are doing, which is where the mind exercise comes into play. ;)

BTW CFI, I went and got components today. ;)

Sex: Absolutely! Hopefully your partner is on the same page...
Other than "horizontal recreation", cardio to get some endorphins crankin.
My guitar playing/building hobby is one that is personal to me. Then I can obsess over the details of which pickups sound best and learning new stuff like slide blues. Last week. I bought an acoustic for when the power goes away...
