COMM Statewide EAS "Test" at 0445 EDT this Morning

Thankfully, I was already awake, but there was a statewide (apparently) EAS test "Extreme Alert" 0445 this morning in Florida. Facebook is wide awake now and the local community pages are in an uproar.

Anyone beyond Florida have a similar wake up call this morning?

I heard it a little while ago In NFLA. It did make me think, but I thought it was just a test. Other than the obvious these days, is there something going on? :shr:

Okay I figured this yesterday Musk post was fake AI on Instagram, but after we had a 4:58 AM wake up of the emergency testing system screeching on the mobile phones this morning. Something maybe up. Didn’t you all get that blaring horn of the emergency alert system saying it’s testing? I don’t see anything on the board about it.

If you don’t have Instagram (posted below), I will tell you that Musk saids,’Is it on, then goes on to say, he got his engineers together to get out the biggest rocket they have and he is going to take his chances to go to Mars instead of staying in this country for AI to take over and Biden to get us in WWIII. And that if you own Doge stock you could possibility inherit Twitter’. Bizarre Instagram I’m sure it was fake, but you should see for the sake of what AI could do to scare us.

Just posted this on the lift off of the Musk rocket post also.

Why am I receiving alerts via text messages? How do I turn them off?

Sometimes you may receive a text alert containing warnings and public safety information on your mobile phone. This is likely sent by Commercial Mobile Alert System (CMAS), an alerting platform used by emergency management officials to disseminate public safety information via geographically targeted text to mobile phones. While Google Public Alerts shows similar warnings and public alerts as CMAS, it is an independent platform developed by Google. Google Public Alerts sends emergency messages to mobile phones via Google Now and also surfaces alerts on various Google properties such as Google Search and Google Maps.

The method for turning off emergency alerts depends on your wireless service provider, but here are some common things to try:

  • iPhones: Settings -> Notifications -> Government Alerts
  • Android devices:
Option 1: Settings -> Wireless & networks -> More -> Emergency Alerts OR
Option 2: Messaging -> Settings -> Emergency message settings
  • Windows phones: Messaging -> ... -> Settings -> Emergency Alerts
  • Blackberry phones: Messages -> Options
If the above methods don't work, please contact your wireless service provider for instructions.

Nothing in Illinois so far, very odd time to run a test considering most people are asleep, I’d be pretty pissed to be woken up that early by an EAS test

TABLE] - Wish I had this list before it screeched me out of bed. And why hasn’t anyone that had a scheduled date before April 20th not say it happened. We’re we the first day and this schedule will change accordingly to future dates.

Has No Life - Lives on TB
Nothing here, in Indiana and that chart above says 4/20 for us?

But I will say, I have some Facebook friends in the UK who are in one of my perfume collector groups. They’re all running around with their hair on fire about something supposedly happening this Sunday in regards to a nationwide “alert”?
They seem to be pretty wound up about it too.

Not that the UK has anything to do with us but it seems odd.

Thankfully, I was already awake, but there was a statewide (apparently) EAS test "Extreme Alert" 0445 this morning in Florida. Facebook is wide awake now and the local community pages are in an uproar.

Anyone beyond Florida have a similar wake up call this morning?
Yes, it was a 4:45AM wake-up call this morning for my wife and I.

We didn't get anything on our phones here in Indiana either. I have an iPhone 8, and DH has some kind of Android phone. I just checked the settings and found that I have test alerts turned off. I don't think I set it that way, so perhaps it is the default? Or maybe it is part of the "Do not disturb" feature. My do not disturb time is from 10:30 PM to 7AM where the only thing allowed to make a noise is a call from anyone in my contacts list. DH's phone is not set that way, however, and he did not get an alert this morning.

Because it happens every month...and has for many, many years.
NO, not that kind of alert, not on a TV or radio……it was an screeching alarm alert from our Iphones and iPads!!!!! .The only time that happened on my iPhone before it was January 13th 2018 when I had an emergency Allert in Hawaii. And that time it said, “ Ballistic Missile threat inbound to Hawaii seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill. Message all in CAPITAL LETTERS. And May I add that was not fun scrambling to get ready for in 20 mins. The all clear didn’t happen for 38 minutes cause the Governor lost his password as his story goes.

State agency apologizes for waking Florida at 4:50 a.m.

WGCU | By Michael Braun
Published April 20, 2023 at 9:06 AM EDT

If you were awakened rather abruptly this morning by a piercing alert tone coming from your phone, you can put the blame on the Florida Department of Emergency Management monthly testing scheme.

And an apology has been made.

A lot of people have cell phones sitting by their beds while they sleep and this morning at 4:50 a.m. they reacted, well, startled, to the FDEM alert relayed statewide by the non-profit, state-chartered Florida Association of Broadcasters.

The alert was not for an emergency, rather just a "test": “This is a TEST of the Emergency Alert System. No action is required.”

The reason for the alert came out via a tweet from the Florida Department of Emergency Management that offered an apology, but little solace for those awakened early:

"We know a 4:45 AM wake up call isn't ideal. @FLSERT wants to apologize for the early morning text. Each month, we test #emergencyalerts on a variety of platforms. This alert was supposed to be on TV, and not disturb anyone already sleeping. We are taking the appropriate action to ensure this will never happen again and that only true emergencies are sent as alerts in the middle of the night."

The FAB's Emergency Alert System or EAS test schedule runs roughly the 20th to the 22nd each month, flipping between 1:50 p.m. and 4:50 a.m.

An explanation on the FAB website says: "Monthly tests will be conducted between 8:30 a.m. and local sunset on odd numbered months and between local sunset and 8:30 a.m. on even numbered months."

April is an even numbered month.

Pat Roberts, an FAB official, also issued an explanation:

"As you know, there was an alert sent this morning at 4:50 a.m. The State of Florida's Division of Emergency Management Watch Office sent out the incorrect test, which sent the wrong alert. We are told we should be receiving a statement from the Division shortly.

"Once we receive it, we will blast it out, and also put out our own statement.

"The test is sent out monthly to only TV and radio broadcasters as required by the FCC. FAB only sets the schedule, the Florida Division of Emergency Management is responsible for sending it out. FAB has no involvement in the sending of these alerts.

"A mistake was made by the Florida Division of Emergency Management, they are well aware of the seriousness of it, and we are all working on it."

The test did not endear many Floridians to the FAB, wrongly so by the above explanation, as witnessed by these posts on the association's Facebook page:

Are you freaking serious? 4:45 AM WAKING EVERYONE UP? Someone needs to lose their job!

Who came up with this schedule? Because of it, hundreds, or even thousands or more will just end up disabling the alerts. Great job bringing it to our attention.

Those alerts are at 3:50am for those of us in the central time zone.... Thanks a lot.

HEY FAB, what an inconsiderate time for a test at 4:45AM this morning. You really need to think about this one, NOT COOL!

Which one of you thought “it’s a great idea to “TEST” the emergency alert system at 4:45am?” You sadistic twerp! A great way to embed a bad impression, so no one takes it serious when it’s real. #genius

According to the Federal Communications Commission the majority of EAS alerts originate from the National Weather Service in response to severe weather events, but an increasing number of state, local, territorial, and tribal authorities also send alerts.

An explanation on EAS from the FCC says:

"The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the FCC, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Weather Service (NWS) work collaboratively to maintain the EAS and Wireless Emergency Alerts, which are the two main components of the national public warning system and enable authorities at all levels of government to send urgent emergency information to the public.

"FEMA is responsible for any national-level activation, tests, and exercises of the EAS.

"The FCC's role includes establishing technical standards for EAS participants, procedures for EAS participants to follow in the event the system is activated, and testing protocols for EAS participants.

"Alerts are created by authorized federal, state, and local authorities. The FCC does not create or transmit EAS alerts."
