Squirrels haven't been busy here. They usually start about now collecting the falling walnuts.

Yes, my lab is getting a very thick coat! Definitely thicker than the last few years. I take that to mean a cold cold winter.

I've seen a couple wasp nests close to the ground on weed stems. Old tales say that means little snow. The higher they build the more snow to come. I sure hope they are right as it's been rainy here all summer.

The squirrels are building them here in the NE. And the wasps, holey cow, they are in our wood pile which is over 5 feet high!! Are you telling me each storm could be that bad? That was last year and I really was hoping we wouldn't get a repeat of it this coming winter. (I did hire a high school boy yesterday as a matter of fact for shoveling). That is a first in my lifetime. I don't dare risk it now. Better to be safer than sorrier. (is that a word?)

I quit putting any stock in such predictions years ago because they were no more correct than a random guess. I doubt animals can predict anything long term. We've been exceptionally cool here the last month with some nightly temperatures in the 50's. Those temps would likely cause a dog's hair growth to accelerate and migratory birds to think about going south. Heck, it even smells like fall to me. I figure it is like fruit trees in the spring. A warm spell triggers them to bud and bloom and quite often they get nipped by a late cold spell.

Leaf nest are used year round here in NC,Winter nest are made in hollows of tree's and old woodpecker nest. You can find them building them year round.

A friend of mine had a pet squirrel that came and went using a dog door it would built a nest on a book shelf in his livingroom. Kind of neat to watch him working the nest but a mess I would not put up with!!!!

I have not checked the back lot to see what the squirrels are doing and yes the make nests out leaves and hollow trees.
One post I see something about walnuts and our black walnuts are not as big as years past and not as many either and same for the chestnuts trees we have growing here.
Our outdoor cats seem to be growing their winter coat as of a week ago.
I have also noticed the ant mounds in some parts of the lawn are really taller than normal and they are piling up the sand or clay somewhat high like 3" to 4" inches and it gets knocked down by the mower, but they keep digging and pile it back up some more in just a day or two.

Been watching a squirrel building a nest high up in one of our trees here for the past week or so.

Hopefully that means no tornados this fall, but I wouldn't count on it.

What's that indicate with the ant mounds? Never heard of that before!

The squirrels aren't exceptionally busy here yet, which I find odd with all the other signs of an early winter from the migration of the Canadian Geese to the fall of the pine needles and leaves.

I'm hoping it isn't an exceptionally cold or wet winter. I am getting waaaay too old for the shoveling snow and dealing with frozen pipes stuff!
