so how exactly do you pull out a tooth ( totally freaking doomed scenario....)

Lynnie is sitting here thinking about worst case scenarios if Iran blows up and CONUS Jihad starts.

I am part way through a root canal....I have antibiotic stuff down the canal to kill off bacteria in the badly abcessed bone, with a temporary filling on top.

Seriously, what would we do in a grid down, no travel scenario if a tooth abcessed? I was almost ready to jump off a bridge before I got codeine, it was so excruciating.

In the old days, you just drank until you were ready to pass out, and got somebody to pull the tooth out with pliers ( before ether).

I pray I never need a tooth pulled out from an abcess, or have to pull someone elses out. But hey, its TB2K.....I guess I ought to find out what to do :)

You got it. But you do need special pliers. Use the standard ones, might crush the tooth particularly if it was badly decayed and then you would really be in bad shape.

One other thing that will make you feel even better.

Some years ago, some 13th century recipes were discovered. But when they were cooked as specified, they turned into mush. After much scientific investigation, they finally hit on the probable answer.

Most adults of that period had such bad teeth they couldnt' chew.

I believe there is a file floating around titled something to the effect "when there is no dentist". It's in PDF format; if you can't find it, PM me, and give me a day or two to get it to you. I have it in a file somewhere.

Saved, to glorify God.
Every time a dentist pulled my tooth WITH LITTLE TROUBLE OR EFFORT he first ran a slim tool between the tooth and the gum on all four sides to BREAK THE CONNECTIONS OF THE TOOTH TO THE SOCKET. THEN, and ONLY AFTER he did this did he effortlessly pop the tooth out with pliers.

Trying to just pull the tooth out while it was still firmly attached to the socket, before loosening it from the socket would be pure, and unnecessary hell.

Every tooth I've had pulled, they just rocked the tooth from front-to-back to break it loose and then pulled it. If it's a front tooth (one root), they are fairly easy to pull. My dad pulled one of his own teeth when it was very loose and driving him crazy (and no he doesn't drink).

DW has been in dentistry for years. She says what she would do if it were a home emergency job is start with a small, thin, sharp pocket knife and gently cut away tissue from the outside & inside of the tooth. Put the blade between the tooth and tissue and let it very gently down until it meets resistance. That's where the tissue meets the tooth. Then very carefully cut down through the tissue just a bare fraction of an inch. Do this on the outside & inside of the tooth if possible. There will be lots of bleeding, hard to see what your doing. This step is not essential, but will aid in pulling the tooth with minimal pain inflicted, since there is actual tissue connected to the tooth.

Then take a very thin slot tip screw driver (a makeshift "elevator" in dental terms) and insert it between the enemy tooth and the tooth in front. Slowly and carefully turn the screwdriver just a bit, then repeat to the rear of tooth. What you're doing is gently rocking the tooth forwards and backwards. Repeat several times.

Then use a pair of needle nose pliers to slowly, gently, but firmly rock the tooth sideways back and forth. Eventually the tooth will come out almost on its own.

The purpose of the screwdriver/elevator and the pliers is to enlarge the bone socket that holds the tooth in. It's not hard to do, but it takes time.

I would only add 2 things: Pain killers for the patient. Also, if you can get special tooth pulling pliers for your kit it will reduce the chance of breaking the tooth. If the tooth breaks in the socket, it's gonna be a mess to get out.

I picked up 3 different kinds of these pliers at a flee market for about $10.

By the way, she said this would be in an emergency situation where no dentist and only basic tools were available. She's seen enough extractions to know what she's doing, I haven't. But it sounds to me like if you've done a lot of precision mechanical work, the procedure wouldn't be impossibly hard. It's just that you're working on a biological "machine."

Rucus, thanks. ( Just in case ...)

Actually I have the "where there is no dentist/doctor" books, but I have no idea where, got them before Y2k. Maybe in a box of prep hard copy printouts.....maybe in the fallout shelter with some books.....maybe upstairs...so many preps and I can never find half of them :D I'll take a look tomorrow.

Thanks all.

Too bad we can't prep opium. Worked for this sort of thing for hundreds of years....
