CRIME Situational Awareness Saved My Life Today

:sh1:So here I was, sitting at a stop sign waiting on busy main thoroughfare traffic to clear. I saw a typical gang banger hangin out on my six, pants hangin low, cell phone to his ear. Just didn't set right but suddenly my radar went off when I couldn't see him in my mirror. Without thinking I reached into the center console and unleathered my compact .45, thumbed the hammer back and tried to get visual acquisition in my mirrors. Saw movement in my peripheral vision, brought my friend up into a target acquisition centered right between his eyes as he rose up by my passenger door from a squat.

Couldn't help but laugh when his eyes got as big as dinner plates, then watched him haulin gangster ass down the ditchbank with his pants at half mast. I have no doubt he was gonna try a carjacking. Nothing was visual to the people behind me, but they sure were laughing when they passed me. I think they knew since the back bumper of his truck had several pro-gun stickers as well.

Sometimes gun control means controlling their intended bad behavior without ever having to fire a shot. I wouldn't have hesitated for a second to pop him though if he would have tried the door handle or acted like he was going to break the window.

Excellent. At any time did you feel racist?

LOL! I'm in Laraza light here in North Alabama and am just biding my time too.

J Reb, glad to hear you took care of the problem in an ethical fashion. You are a good man! At least you got some real time draw practice in for the next poncho that might need a better lesson in manners.

Bet he never tries to ask for directions that way again. ;)
ROFLMAO!

At the state-required purchaser's class my dh attended today, the instructor mentioned that often the mere sight or sound of chambering is enough to prevent an escalation. Case in point.

Good job, Johnny Reb.

Johnny--if u were a woman, I'd marry you.

Wait--you are a dude, right?

ANYWAY--THANK YOU!!! THANK YOU!!! AND THANK YOU!!! You would have been a victim, but instead, you did what ANY red-blooded, God fearing, American citizen should have the RIGHT TO DO...and that's defend oneself.

The other option would have been to pick up your cell phone and call 911, and you would have been put on hold because there aren't enough dispatchers to answer your call for help.

God Bless You--and thank you for standing up for your right and for your country!

Somebody start singing with me...come on everybody...

Johnny,

Have you read the Argentina collapse thread? Links to a blog from ferfal that lives it, that is one of the things that he stresses over and over and over again, well you stopped at the stop sign, he says no one stops there anymore at traffic lights either -- hot spot for opportunistic thugs!

Interesting and eye opening reading it is!

Good on you for acting on your gut!

With all this doom and gloom with the economy, this was one thread that brought a smile to my face today. Thank you. That did make my day. :)

Johnny Confederate,

Thank God you are alive, you reacted properly!

However, why do you live in Spanic Land? You are behind enemy lines.

Also, Ronald Regan granted the First Amnesty to the Invaders in 1986ad, did you not know that? TPTB are ALL traitors, Regan included, you know, the Regan that also gave us Sandra day O'Connor?

God save part of the South for White people!

Nothing racist about it. I would have done the same no matter what color the perp happened to be. Several years ago I drew down on a homeless white guy who happened to feel he was entitled to ask for a donation by jumping up on the hood of my bronco and started beating on my windshield. He just didn't understand the word no. Then the second incident was with a tweaked out meth head who cut me off in a lane, then when we pulled up to the stop light he exited his vehicle with a tire iron. I calmly opened my door using it as a shield, yelled, "if you approach me I will shoot you" twice before the words made it through the meth haze. I then pulled into a lot to call the LEO's since there were multiple witnesses to theincident and I'm sure some cell phone hero would call. Luckily there was a LEO in the parking lot. I told him what happened. I guess it didn't hurt that I was still in my EMS uniform. He simply asked me why I didn't shoot the perp. When I explained that the perp complied, he just shook his head and said, "Some people live despite our best efforts to convince then that they should be eliminated from the gene pool. It wouldn't have been a righteous shoot since he didn't approach me closer than 30 feet and I couldn't honestly say my life was in imminent danger. The LEO agreed but also said I did the right thing by reporting it since there is a law in New Mexico about criminal menacing with a firearm.

3 draws in 10 years without a shot fired. I hold a CCW and common sense, understand the law, and comply as best I can. But never at the expense of my families safety.

When New Mexico was trying to pass their CCW law, I wrote my state senator and asked him this simple question. If New Mexico trusts me to carry medications as an EMS provider that could do as much harm as good if improperly administered without common sense, then why couldn't they trust me to carry concealed to protect my family. Especially since my job daily brings me into contact with the criminal element of our society and I'm sometimes called upon to testify against them in criminal cases. I received a letter back from him and he told me that was the first argument he had heard that actually made sense. He voted yes for the CCW.

As gun owners and citizens we can make a positive impact if we leave the emotional rhetoric behind and just talk common sense.

You did good.

Glad to see another .45 owner.

I'd prolly let him yank the door open then shot him. Would have saved someone else from getting jacked and not busted my glass.

I keep my doors locked all the time when I am driving. If some idiot jumps on the hood of my car they will get a very dangerous and unexpected ride. My Dad always had a shotgun in his truck and when I used to take deposits to the bank from a Deli we owned, I used to take the truck. I had no problems.

SassyinAZ got it right about stop signs.

I thought people in the hood were just bad drivers (they are) but it is common to see people just drive right through a stop light or stop sign.

It's an anit-car jacking tactic in addition to just not giving a cr*p about traffic laws.

That's why

That is the reason I bought my 45 and obtained my CCL. I knew someone who was car jacked and while they didn't get hurt it scared the cr*p out of them. Now at intersections I always look around when I stop and I leave enough room between me and the car in front of me to be able to exit if I have to. That doesn't always work out because of traffic on either side but the key is situational awareness at all times.

There has been a large increase in car jackings, home invasions, armed robbery, etc in this area and I just hope to be prepared if it should ever happen to me.

Oh yeah. The sound of a pump shotgun is unmistakable. My dh scared the daylights of some teenaged boys that were there to see my teen daughter once and didn't do anything. He was in our room, not concerning himself with teens or anything but getting his guns ready for hunting and jacked the shell. 20' away in the next room (where they could not see him and didn't know he was doing anything) the 3 of them heard that sound and you could have heard a pin drop as they realized what that sound was all by their lonesomes.1 just laughed cuz he knows how my dh is, and the other 2 literally hit the floor behind the couch and CRAWLED out the door because they had heard stories of him being the entire NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH all by his lonesome. I have not seen them since.

The Colt 45 was known as the "peacemaker" for the same reason.

Bravo.

Good move, Reb!!!

As my daddy used to say (a country boy) .... "Ain't too many folks stupid enough to mess with a woman racking a shotgun and aiming it at them"

Amazing how just seeing that your victim isn't going to go down without a fight can change a perps' mind ........

Nice one JR

Couple O' things, one major kudos to you for even being aware of the guy. WAY too people in our society wouldn't have even noticed him.

Two, thank you for not giving in to the temptation we sometimes have to ignore our intuition. We tell ourselves "oh stop being paranoid" or "what will others think" I know I do it and it is something in todays world we have to get away from doing

Three, you acted appropriately and in a manner totally consistent with the phrase "I used only that force necessary to end the incident"

Way to go and thank you !!!
