Sept 7: a day of Prayer and Penance

September 03, 2013

The Holy Father convokes a day of prayer and penance for peace in the Middle East.

The call for peace is certainly a good one. His plea was made during the Angelus prayer at midday in St. Peter's Square, in the presence of thousands of faithful. We offer below an excerpt of the Holy Father's homily:
“May the plea for peace rise up and touch the heart of everyone so that they may lay down their weapons and let themselves be led by the desire for peace.

“To this end, brothers and sisters, I have decided to proclaim for the whole Church on 7 September next, the vigil of the birth of Mary, Queen of Peace, a day of fasting and prayer for peace in Syria, the Middle East, and throughout the world, and I also invite each person, including our fellow Christians, followers of other religions and all men of good will, to participate, in whatever way they can, in this initiative.

“On 7 September, in Saint Peter’s Square, here, from 7 p.m. until 12 a.m. we will gather in prayer and in a spirit of penance, invoking God’s great gift of peace upon the beloved nation of Syria and upon each situation of conflict and violence around the world. Humanity needs to see these gestures of peace and to hear words of hope and peace! I ask all the local churches, in addition to fasting, that they gather to pray for this intention.

“Let us ask Mary to help us to respond to violence, to conflict and to war, with the power of dialogue, reconciliation and love. She is our mother: may she help us to find peace; all of us are her children! Help us, Mary, to overcome this most difficult moment and to dedicate ourselves each day to building in every situation an authentic culture of encounter and peace. Mary, Queen of Peace, pray for us!”

PS Please, no derogatory remarks in this thread, start a new one if you don't like what you see here. We need prayer and penance, not arguments. Thanks.

And again, please guys. I know that not every one here is a fan of the RC. We know, ok? We know how you feel, we've been over this and over this.

But regardless of how you feel, almost every single one of you knows about FASTING and PRAYING. That much unites us...that and the GOD we pray to.

Please, no snark. Just pray, pray as if your life depends on it! (your soul certainly does)

I wholeheartedly agree! We need heavy duty prayers and penance from people all over the world!!

I'm not Catholic, but I will join in with the prayers throughout the day tomorrow. Because of my meds, I can't do the fasting.

I have a feeling you won't be getting many Cathbash remarks eens. Many Catholics and non-Catholics alike are getting the same feelings to PRAY, leaving the petty attacks aside!!!

Oh, if only the WHOLE WORLD would PRAY!!! If that were to happen, I believe wholeheartedly we could stave off what looks like a coming war.

We have been praying for peace in our family/extended family for weeks, but we'll be joining in tomorrow, as well. I think moments like this strike fear & concern into the hearts of all God-fearing folks & we'll all do well to spend time committed to prayer, fasting & even a little more kindness in our communities. Thanks for this thread. Timely reminder to turn our hearts toward the One whose single word will still the fury of war for all time.

Pope Francis will consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on October 13, 2013.

Our Lady appeared in Fátima (Portugal) from the 13th of May to the 13th of October 1917.

History of the Consecration:

June 13, 1929
Our Lady fulfills her promise, asking “for the consecration of Russia to Her Immaculate Heart, promising its conversion through this means and the hindering of the propagation of its errors."

December 1940
Sr. Lucia writes letter to Pius XII, saying that Our Lord Himself requests the Pope to “consecrate the world to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, with a special mention for Russia, and order that all the Bishops of the world do the same in union with Your Holiness.”

May 13, 1982
Pope John Paul II invites the bishops of the world to join him in consecrating the world and with it Russia to the Immaculate Heart. Many do not receive the invitation in time for the Pope’s trip to Fatima, where he accomplishes the consecration. Sr. Lucia later says it did not fulfill the conditions.

March 25, 1984
Pope John Paul II, “united with all the pastors of the Church in a particular bond whereby we constitute a body and a college,” consecrates “the whole world, especially the peoples for which by reason of their situation you have particular love and solicitude.” Both the Pope and Sr. Lucia initially seemed uncertain that the consecration has been fulfilled, but shortly thereafter Sr. Lucia tells the papal nuncio to Portugal that the Consecration is fulfilled.

August 29, 1989
Sr. Lucia affirms in correspondence that the consecration “has been accomplished” and that “God will keep His word.”

Be Well

may all be well
As a Hindu, fasting and praying are very traditional and I will observe tomorrow in some manner including prayer and a modified fast. I love this Pope.

I don't have time to discuss too much at the moment but this is incorrect.

The 1984 act did not specifically mention Russia which is one of the key requirements and this did not fulfill Our Lady's request . Lost of misinformation out about this. The 1989 quote attributed to Sr. Lucia contradicts a number of things she said in the past and is not reliable.

The true consecration where Russia is specifically named as the object of the consecration and all of the world's bishops publicly participate with the pope in the act of consecration remains undone.

Thank you for posting this - as a Mormon, I will be spending tomorrow in fast and prayer.

This may be what is needed to at the least slow the adversary down from reaching his goal.

I agree that a true consecration as specified by Our Lady was never done.

From The Devil's Final Battle:
"If it is not done, Russia will spread its errors throughout the
world. There will be wars, famine, persecutions of the Church, and
martyrdom of the good. The Holy Father will have much to suffer.
And if Our Lady’s requests are still not obeyed, then various nations
will be annihilated."

I hope today's call for prayer and fasting is just a warm-up for the pope actually doing the consecration of Russia as asked for by Our Lady. October 13 would be a great date or just sometime soon.

It is possible the JPII's consecrations of the world had positive effects on Russia as they seemed to be moving in a more moral direction while the USA and the West heads in the wrong direction becoming more decadent.

I think long-suffering Russia is primed and ready for conversion if the pope will just get it done.

Pray that we may have peace and be a part of the peace as God has planned according to his divine plan and time.
