Company on Decision to Pull Ads from Beck TV Show: 'We Do Not Want to be Associated with Hateful Speech'
By Jeff Poor

UPDATE: Sargento says Colors of Change did not influence company's decision (at bottom)

What constitutes "hateful speech?" It depends on the views of the individual, or in this case the advocacy group propagating the claim.

Earlier this week, Plymouth, Wisc.-based Sargento Food, Inc., along with several other companies, pulled their advertising from the Fox News Channel's "Glenn Beck" program some at the behest of a campaign by Color of Change, an advocacy group [1].

Barbara Gannon, vice president of Corporate Communications & Government Relations for Sargento Foods Inc., told the Business & Media Institute [2] why her company decided to stop advertising during the Fox News Channel program.

"I can confirm that Sargento has instructed our media buyer to not buy advertising that would appear during the Glenn Beck Show," Gannon said in an e-mail to the Business & Media Institute on Aug. 14. "We market our products to people regardless of their political affiliations. As a business, we sometimes disagree with the administration's policies. Yet we do not want to be associated with hateful speech used by either liberal or conservative television hosts."

Sargento Foods is a privately held company [3] and one of the largest cheese manufacturers in the United States. But it isn't the only advertiser that has decided to abandon Beck's show. Other companies including GEICO, Lawyers.com, Progressive Insurance, Procter & Gamble, and SC Johnson have decided to move their spots from Beck's program to other Fox News programming.

There have also been grassroots efforts started in support of Beck. Erick Erickson of RedState.com began a campaign targeting those advertisers [4] in an anti-boycott movement.

"We need to strike back and boycott these groups for ditching Beck," Erickson wrote in a post dated Aug. 13. "If they are going to fold so easily in the face of Obama brownshirts, we must push back. If not, who'll be next?"

The group that has orchestrated the campaign to boycott Beck's show, Color of Change, was started by Obama's Green Jobs Czar, Van Jones, according to Matthew Vadum's report for the Aug. 12 American Spectator [5].

"The extremist racial grievance group [Color of Change] isn't happy that Beck did several news packages on Van Jones [6], President Obama's controversial green jobs czar who describes himself as a communist," Vadum wrote. "Jones is a founding board member of Color of Change, but Color of Change doesn't want you to know that. Maybe having an avowed America-hating radical on the group's board is bad public relations."

Liberal pundits have celebrated the successful tactics that have forced corporations to stop advertising on the Beck program. MSNBC "Countdown" host Keith Olbermann made a victory lap on his Aug. 14 program, calling Fox News "reactionary media."

"If you appear on reactionary media and call a president of the United States a racist, advertisers will still abandon you and they will abandon you faster than ever before," Olbermann said. "A cheese company, a popular clothiers, SC Johnson Wax, Procter and Gamble, Lawyers.com and two - possibly three insurance firms have now bailed out on Glenn Beck. Beware the snowball, lonesome roads."

Olbermann likened Beck to conservative radio hosts Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage and CNN host Lou Dobbs, suggesting they could be part of the next campaign.

"The research into conservative radio listening habits, the more hate they hear, the longer they listen, the more money Limbaugh and Savage and Dobbs and Beck make - explaining their health - hate-for-hire stance on health care reform," Olbermann said. "Except, you can still go too far. How much trouble is Glenn Beck in after a seventh, possibly eighth major advertiser cancels its commercials on his programs?"

A representative from Fox News told the Business & Media Institute it stands by an earlier statement [7] made by Bill Shine, SVP of Programming.

"During Fox & Friends this morning, Glenn Beck expressed a personal opinion which represented his own views, not those of the Fox News Channel," Shine said. "And as with all commentators in the cable news arena, he is given the freedom to express his opinions."

*****Update: Sargento VP Gannon Responds:

"I had never heard of the Color of Change organization until it was mentioned by a consumer who called us and claimed we were influenced by them, and I notice you have mentioned it as well. This group did not contact Sargento and did not influence our decision."

What Is ColorOfChange.org?

ColorOfChange.org exists to strengthen Black America's political voice. Our goal is to empower our members—Black Americans and our allies—to make government more responsive to the concerns of Black Americans and to bring about positive political and social change for everyone.

We were heart-broken and outraged by the catastrophe that followed Hurricane Katrina. And we were devastated to realize that no African-American organization or coalition had the capacity to respond on the necessary scale.

Hurricane Katrina made it clear that our lack of a political voice has life-and-death consequences. With no one to speak for them, hundreds of thousands of people—largely Black, poor, and elderly—were left behind to die. But it wasn't just Black folks. Poor, sick, and elderly people of every color were abandoned too. We are not alone, and when we work to protect Black lives and interests, we do the same for all who have been left behind in political silence.

ColorOfChange.org is comprised of Black folks from every economic class, as well as those of every color who seek to help our voices be heard. Our members are united behind a simple, powerful pledge: we will do all we can to make sure all Americans are represented, served, and protected—regardless of race or class.
What We Do

Using the Internet, we will enable our members to speak in unison, with an amplified political voice. We will keep them informed about the most pressing issues for Black people in America and give them ways to act. We will lobby elected representatives using email, the telephone, and face-to-face meetings. We'll bring attention to the needs and concerns of Black folks by holding coordinated events in different parts of the country, running TV and print advertisements, and demanding that the news media cover our issues. We will also work with other groups—online efforts and other organizations that are doing related work—to magnify our impact.

When we come together and speak with one voice, we cannot be ignored.

I just sent them an email letting them know I wouldn't be spending any more money with a company that doesn't support and appreciate the right to free speech, and that I took a dim view of anyone who would use the tactics they used in efforts to silence anyone-whether they agreed with them or not. I also let them know I don't listen to Beck. :D

Hold on. What makes you think they have a problem with free speech? Did they ask the government to silence Beck? It appears to me they just withdrew their advertising dollars. That, one could argue, is an expression of free speech as well.

You take a dim view of companies choosing to advertise in venues that are consistent with whatever their beliefs are? Do you really want to promote the idea that companies should not be able to position their advertising based on show content?

Even if they are wrong and have been spun by this group, this is really not a free speech issue.

Done

They have a right to pull their advertising for whatever reason they see fit.

I also have the right to not buy their products. And from here on out......I won't.

I can and will choose to spend my money with companies who don't piss me off. Sargento is not on the list of companies I will support. They were, and now they aren't. What's it to you if I tell them I've decided to withdraw my grocery money from them?

I didn't say you shouldn't withdraw your support of them. I said it is not a free speech issue. You are doing to them what they did to Beck; both of you are perfectly within your rights to do so - that is how a free market is supposed to work.

To Whom It May Concern:

I recently became aware of your company's withdrawl of sponsorship from the Glenn Beck program, which airs on the Fox News Channel. Prior to this act, I have always enjoyed your products for what they are....really good cheese. Unfortunately, anything with your company's name, Sargento, now leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Really, you should stay away from politics, and stick to making a great product. I realize that the decision to withdrawl sponsorship from the Glenn Beck program is your company's right. I respect that right. However, I also have the right to send my dollars elsewhere.

It may interest you to know that I have never written a letter expressing discontent to a company prior to this. My wife and I regularly vote, but are not affiliated with any political party. I have never given so much as a dollar to any political party or candidate. I have three young children, who all love cheese....any cheese. I'm sorry to say that all of your products that were in our household have now been fed to our pets. When your commericals come on, I now explain to my children why your company is "bad". I will also make it a goal to let all of our friends and family know of your company's stance. While the purchases of my family and friends may not amount to much, it's a start.

It's funny how something as simple and good as cheese has intersected with the murky world of politics, opinion polls, and public relations. In my humble opinion, something has definitely gone moldy at Sargento.

Sincerely,

Castle

I just sent them my email. These companies are trying their best to stop free speech and I hope it bankrupts them. I am also dropping my car insurance policy with GIECO and I am telling them why.

Here's what I wrote:

Really love your products, especially your artisan cheeses.
Really hate how you've injected politics into the mix by withdrawing ad dollars from Glenn Beck.
Tomorrow, when I do my weekly shopping, I will studiously avoid anything with the Sargento name on it. I am very disappointed in you. Kraft will benefit from your error; you and my palate will suffer.

Please let me know when you come to your senses!

Who?

Who do they think is buying their cheese? Obahma's voters get Government cheese and I'm pretty sure that it is not Sargento cheese.

Never again will I ever purchase anything with the Sargento name on it.

I just sent them an email letting them know I wouldn't be spending any more money with a company that doesn't support and appreciate the right to free speech, and that I took a dim view of anyone who would use the tactics they used in efforts to silence anyone-whether they agreed with them or not. So did I. :ld: I've bought a lot of their cheese over the years, but no more.

I will miss Sargento. Going to tell the wife right now. Bastards.

Let me add: Sonsabitches. I hate liberals. Why don't they go crawl up in their lilly-livered Socialist holes and leave us free-marketers alone. ?

It is their right to do this.

It is also the right of their consumers to boycott them over this issue. There is a possibility that they are aware that folks will boycott them and that they feel this strongly about it.

Thanks for the url, Avatar.
This email just sent:

Dear Sargento Foods,

We have previously enjoyed your quality cheeses. And while I respect your right to single out Glenn Beck to boycott his Fox News segment, I hope you will respect my choice to boycott any and all of your products. It has been our policy to withhold our purchases from those who use deceptive advertising, unjustly slander another competitor, or attempt to use economic pressure to demean another individual or spokesperson. Since it appears that you have chosen to bring pressure upon Fox News for political reasons, we have no other choice than to discontinue use of your products in our home and corporate catering service.

Respectfully,

Their food is junk food anyway...better off not ingesting it.

If anyone wants to argue why I'll be more than happy to set the matter straight.

Thanks for the links guys. I sat up late last night to utilize them.

Here's what I wrote to Sargento:

I was so disappointed to hear you are bowing down to radical agendas and pull your advertising for the Glen Beck program on Fox News Channel. (Which BTW has the largest viewing ratings for news.) Glen Beck is very brave in exposing corruption from both parties and boldly stands for the U.S. Constitution and the freedom of speech. Unfortunately, either you don’t think he has that right or have buckled under some kind of pressure. Either way, I respect your right to withdraw and I will exercise my right to not purchase any more Sargento Cheese which makes me sad because it‘s so good. (But not good enough to cheapen my American soul.)

P.S. You may think losing my little bit of my patronage money is nothing to bother with but if you let the intimidation of radical liberals take away a Constitutional Freedom you will ultimately loose a whole lot more if they win because I really don’t think their ultimate agenda is a good place for the Freemarket either, if you catch my drift. (Isn’t that ironic because that’s precisely one of the Freedoms that Glen Beck is fighting for!!!)

Just my personal opinion but I agree they have the right to advertise with who they want. Their choice. But at the same time, from a business sense, why would you not want to advertise on one of the highest rated news programs on television?

My e-mail:

I am disappointed that you choose to boycott Glenn Beck - I have heard the context in which he spoke and I feel that he was justified. I thought that we believed in free speech in this country - I suppose that today it can only be free if you side yourself with the populist ideology. Until Sargento advertises on the Glenn Beck Show I will not be purchasing Sargento and I will certainly share this information with my friends.
