Landscapers found a car buried in an Atherton backyard Thursday afternoon, police said.

This happened in a home on the 300 block of Stockbridge Avenue.

Police said the owner of the property had no idea the car was there.

This is a developing story, check back for updates.

Most of the time it takes 24 or more hours to bring in specially trained dogs for dead bodies.
I have found that West Virginia does not have any dogs trained to sniff drugs, but K-9 officers are seen using their tracking dog to sniff for drugs and get the dog to scratch at a car and say the dog detected drugs when it did not.
They have been caught doing this.

From the drone video, it appears to be a large convertible, with a top that retracts into the trunk area. Unless the hinges are now disconnected at the front of the trunk lid, it appears to open 'backwards' compared to a traditional trunk. This is exactly how the retractable tops on several mid-60s American luxury cars operated.

I'll wager an initial guess that this is a 1960s-era Lincoln or Thunderbird ragtop. The plot thickens...

ETA: Watched the clip a few more times, and the car appears a little small for a FoMoCo luxo-barge. Hmmmm.

Didn't the Edsels of the late 50's have the same set-up? They would be somewhat small than a full=sized Lincoln.

We found a car buried on our property once, at the old farm house folks bought a few year prior.

It had a sewer pipe going in the passenger window, window rolled up to hold the pipe in place, and a drain line out the drivers side window heading out to a drain field.

Too bad it didn't have a sunroof, perhaps we could have had it pumped and saved digging it out for a few more years

Local lore has a young hell-raiser disappearing. Car & all vanished.

Fast forward a few years and cops are investigating a separate crime and see about 6 inches of car antenna sticking out of the ground.
It wouldn't budge because it was attached to the aforementioned h3ll-raiser's car with him still in it.

Moral of the story: never mess over the daughter of an old man with a junk yard and a huge excavator. :)

Moral of story 2.0: Break off the antenna or take ground settling into account.

I'm going to toss a gamble guess and say its one of these:

My dad had one identical to the black one.

And it was insurance fraud or a missing person case will be opening up.

they'd still have to dig it up - but - really not uncommon for requests to be buried in a fav car - getting it done LEGAL is the problem >>>> got a sneaking idea if they investigate the past property owners they get a truth .....

if it's nefarious - why bury the freaking car??? - digging that hole draws attention no matter hows it done .....

I watched the 2nd video at the link and apparently the inside of the car is filled with concrete, and the vin and plate have been found and linked to the former owner who sold the house a couple of years ago. So likely not Jimmy Hoffa. He may still be under the 50 yard line.

I'm going to buy a good backhoe! Someday hopefully sooner than later.
I’ve been looking at Purplewave for 12 months trying to do the same at a price I can afford and location close enough to make the purchase reasonable.

Seriously, but one that digs down to 20 feet. Dig such a hole, cover car down to 8 foot level. Compact the backfill earth. Then put common throw away/garbage items on top with some dead animals, cover fully to top.. When it's reexcavated they will find just the garbage.

Reminds me of a big gas line explosion here in NJ in 94.
When they were cleaning up afterwards they noticed the steel pipe had heavy damage in the coating and the steel.
Then in the rubble they found the remnants of a car. Then they realized the car was not destroyed by the explosion. It had been buried in the ground.
Found the vin, found out the previous owner put in a claim it was stolen and the owner owned that land back in the day.
So long and short of it was the guy mangled the 36" gas line with the trackhoe when he buried the car.
I don't remember how many years prior to the explosion the car was buried, it was quite a few.
I seem to recall the property being a lot where construction equipment was stored or something like that.

There is only a little info here.

KF hunter this reminds me of your post. Was it a 1937 Chevy Coup? Norwegian/American humor not for everyone but I laugh every time.
