San Francisco advertises services for illegal immigrants

The city wants undocumented workers to know they won't face discrimination when seeking public aid.

SAN FRANCISCO -- This city has long considered itself a compassionate place, promoting gay marriages and expanded homeless welfare programs.

Now officials are extending a very public welcome to undocumented workers.

This week, the city launched a campaign featuring TV and radio ads, billboards and bus signs reminding residents of its status as a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants. The $83,000 blitz will include brochures distributed at police stations and hospitals, promising safe access to city services regardless of residency status.

"We're inviting people to come out of the shadows and take advantage of services," said Mayor Gavin Newsom. San Francisco has tried to make this point clear for years.

Since it became a sanctuary city in 1989, the city has barred employees from assisting federal officials with immigration investigations or arrests. But Newsom said recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in San Francisco and the Bay Area convinced him the city needed to do more.

City officials wanted to remind illegal workers that the city would not play a part in any possible discrimination they might encounter at the hands of the federal government, the mayor said.

While numerous communities -- including San Jose, Oakland, Seattle and Miami -- consider themselves sanctuary cities, none of the others has launched a campaign to advertise that fact, officials here say.

Los Angeles does not consider itself a sanctuary city, but officials say police will not take part in federal immigration raids. "Our officers are not immigration officers," said Matt Szabo, a spokesman for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

A spokesman for Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich called San Francisco's program "a tragedy."

"It's an insult to the people who waited in line and filled out forms so they would do things right," said Tony Bell. "For them, it's a slap in the face."

Newsom deflected such criticism. "We're not trying to convince people in Los Angeles," he said. "We're trying to assist people in our own city and county."

San Francisco's ads -- written in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Russian -- encourage residents to seek services and report crimes without fear of being deported.

Newsom, a Democrat who is considering a run for governor in 2010, said he hopes it will have an effect at shelters and psychiatric intake units.

He acknowledged that much of the reaction to the sanctuary program has been negative, attracting even more criticism than his stand on gay marriage.

"We've heard from 'The O'Reilly Factor' types," he said. "But we're convinced that this is the right thing to do."

Well, before we start our next round of BASHING the single most hated state in the Union, let me say this.

San Francisco
Berkeley
Santa Cruz
and a few other ultra liberal University towns

Are island of liberal INSANITY in an otherwise very nice state. They are not representative of the rest of the population.

Thank you for listening to my rant

Proceed to bash California as you normally would

I live in SF and I think what Mayor Newsom did makes sense economically especially for health care. You want those without health care to seek medical treatment before things get worse and they need the high dollar medical care. In the short term you will see an increase in cost, but in the long run it's very cost effective as I believe the City has to pay the medical costs. I think this could also apply to psychicatric care. Better to have an illegal alien in a treatment facility than to have them on the street.

I wonder too if once an illegal alien is in the system, the city can pass the costs through to the state. The illegal immigrant issue is not going to be solved overnight. They're here and the City has to deal with them, and they might as well do it in a way that makes sense economically.

I

am or was a long term Californian. I wasn't born there but I first arrived as a 7 year old.

I've been a radical in Cali, but not a nuttso one. I always kept a lick of common sense about me and got trashed by my far more radical leftist maxist buddies so much so I was called the "reactionarie".

The State went insane about 20 years ago. The MAJORITY of citizens are up in arms over the insanity, and have been since at least 1995. We passed props 189 and 209, and in both those cases I put my money where my mouth was.

The ELITISTS and Globalists who run the government there didn't give a sh_t. They IGNORED both measures.

The State is now officially broke. I had a talk (argument) with my school children's principle in about 1997 in the central valley about the illegals. I said what the hell are you going to do when the State runs out of money, it really doesn't grow on trees, and this State WILL go broke. Will you deny care to your children and give it to the illegal mexicans?

She said "I will not deny education to any child for any reason". I said something to the effect of "we'll see. once the money runs out".

I'm all for health care. I've had it in Ontario. I paid for mind you, at least a decade of slightly above average taxes. And I liked it.

However, there are most likely 15 million illegal mexicans sucking every penny out of white America (sounds racist? maybe, but I remember the DAY that Red Davis was elected in Cali, and his Leut. Govenor got on the public radio and Mike Savage had the balls to play the LG's rant where I heard him brag that "we have heard the last of white rule in California".................... now that's racist, but hey, lefties can get away with it)....................

and those illegals have sucked the State dry.

I'm gone, but I have my sister's there. That place is going to be very unpleasant as the dollar dies.

For the politically correct. Your liberal stance won't serve you sh_t if you have the misfortune to run into some illegals when they decide to go bandito.

Arm up. It is coming.

ALL taxpayer-funded entitlements (including medical care) should be DENIED to those here illegally. Either that, or the government(s) of the person(s) origin must agree BY TREATY to reimburse the hsot country 100% of each illegal immigrant's cost to the US taxpayer. And then they'd better BY GOD pay up.
