#BREAKING: The #Ukraine Air Force is now using Yak-52 training aircraft as interceptors against #Russian suicide and attack drones. You can see it intercepting a drone to shoot it down. The damaged drone can be seen falling with its parachute deployed.

Very practical - much lower cost to operate - you don't need F-16's to shoot down drones with $100k missiles (well the US does). Also the slower speed allows easer targeting. Not sure how many they have - if enough to make a difference.
Eventually we will likely be seeing Hunter-Killer drones - actually some reports of them being developed.
Totally new type of warfare!

Ukrainian strikes Russian storage of deadly glide bombs
By Dylan Malyasov
2–3 minutes

Ukrainian suicide drones reportedly targeted Russian storage facilities containing deadly glide bombs during overnight strikes on April 27 in the Slavyansk, Severny, and Kushchevsky districts of the Krasnodar Krai region, Russia.

The Governor of Krasnodar Krai, Veniamin Kondratyev, confirmed explosions in Slavyansk-na-Kubani on April 27, describing them as an attempted large-scale drone attack on oil refineries and infrastructure facilities in the region.

Russian media subsequently published footage allegedly showing the aftermath of an attack on a military airfield in Kushchevskaya, Krasnodar Krai, revealing the destruction of a storage facility where Russia’s wing kits for ‘dumb’ bombs were reportedly housed.

- ADVERTISEMENT - CONTINUE READING BELOW -

Visible in the footage were control units and fairings of the UMPK, or Unified Gliding and Correction Module. The UMPK is a wing kit assembly used to convert unguided bombs into precision-guided munitions. Russia has upgraded heavy Soviet-era aviation bombs, outfitting them with planning and guidance modules, thus creating a relatively inexpensive alternative to guided missiles.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) said that Russia is using glide bombs, along with direct-attack munitions, in volume to overwhelm Ukrainian air defense.

Hard to say what the extent of these drone strikes are - fly enough and some will get through. Oil refineries and infrastructure facilities are great targets - even a small explosion will likely set off a fire - great video - but as noted often put out in less than an hour. These do get the headlines - what is not generally reported is what happened on the other side.
A summary of what was hit in Ukraine on the night of April 27
Russian Missiles vs Ukrainian Drones - you do the math.

The strike targeted:
The Krivoy Rog Thermal Power Plant (TPP)
The Burshtyn TPP
The Pridneprovsk TPP.
Several pumping stations near underground gas storage facilities in western Ukraine
Ukrainian Armed Forces’ military facilities near the Starokostiantyniv airfield were also destroyed.
In some cases, targets were hit with 4 to 7 missiles.

A total of 32 missiles from air, ground, and sea-based platforms were likely used in the strike:
▪️ 9 Kh-101/Kh-555 cruise missiles from Tu-95 strategic bombers;
▪️ 9 guided air-to-surface missiles Kh-59/Kh-69;
▪️ 2 Iskander-K cruise missiles;
▪️ 4 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal missiles from MiG-31K aircraft;
▪️ 8 Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea.

I have read several accounts that Poland, Germany, Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania are now on board with repatriating the ''Ukrainian Draft Dodgers''.
A narrative is taking shape before our eyes again in Old Europe. ''Ukrainian Draft Dodgers''.
You should be aware that at least 1/2 of the Ukrainians presently in Europe arrived there after the ''Maidan'' and before Feb., 2022.
These people left because of the gov't in Kiev.

This means that Ukraine is forced to import more electricity, from the E.U. that is not doing that well.
So a military and a society must collapse in sync.

Some reports that Russia may offer them passports or visas to enter Russia, most likely they already speak Russian.
Given their options - back to Ukraine and front line combat - or Russia which needs more workers - should be an easy call.
Nothing firm on this - but if they did it the OPTICS would be classic - Ukrainian men in the EU going to Russia and not back to their "motherland" of Ukraine.
As noted just rumors now - have to keep an eye on this.

Ukrainian Yak-52 Equipped With Machine Gun Shoots Down Russian UAV – Reports

April 27, 2024 War in Ukraine

Yak 52 Russian drone

In an engagement reminiscent of WWII dogfights, a Ukrainian training aircraft reportedly shot down a Russian drone.

On Apr. 27, 2024, a Ukrainian Yak-52 training aircraft, shot down a Russian Orlan-10 drone over Odessa, according to several reports by the Ukrainian media.

Some videos shared on Telegram and X show the Yak-52 circling around the drone descending towards the ground on a parachute, which most likely automatically deployed.

View: https://youtu.be/tF-KyWgQ390

How the Yak-52 shot down the drone is not clear.

According to some sources, the Ukrainian trainers have not been retrofitted with wing or fuselage-mounted machine guns due to the extensive and technically challenging modifications required to integrate such weaponry into the airframe.

The Ukrainian Militarnyi website reported that, although the Yak-52B variant retains the capability to carry GUV-8700 pods with machine guns or UB-32 pods with unguided rockets this configuration was produced only in one example. Therefore, the Russian drone was probably shot down by the second crew member, using a gun or automatic weapon.

The Yak-52

The Yakovlev Yak-52 is a Soviet-era primary trainer aircraft that was widely used for military pilot training. It was designed by Yakovlev Design Bureau and first flew in 1976. The Yak-52 is a two-seat, single-engine, all-metal monoplane with a low-wing configuration.

One of the distinctive features of the Yak-52 is its aerobatic capability but it is also known for its robust airframe, making it popular among aerobatics enthusiasts and airshow performers.

The Yak-52 is powered by a single Vedeneyev M-14P radial engine, providing sufficient power for aerobatic maneuvers and training flights. The aircraft has a tandem seating arrangement, with the student pilot sitting in the front and the instructor pilot in the rear. This configuration allows for effective training and communication between the pilot and instructor during flight.

In addition to its training role, the Yak-52 has also been used for light ground attack missions. Some variants were equipped with underwing hardpoints to carry machine gun pods or unguided rockets for ground attack missions.

The aircraft’s slow stall speed makes it perfect for SMI (Slow Movers Intercept) mission like the one reportedly carried out over Ukraine on Apr. 27, 2024.

The Orlan-10 UAV

The Orlan-10 is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) developed by the Russian company Special Technology Center LLC (STC Orlan). It is designed primarily for reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition missions. T

Putin is using 'nuclear blackmail' — and Russia defeating Ukraine could spark global chaos and economic disaster, Jamie Dimon warns

  • Russia defeating Ukraine could spark chaos and slam the global economy, Jamie Dimon said.
  • The JPMorgan CEO said a Putin victory could fuel a nuclear arms race and trigger more battles.
  • Dimon warned US-China tensions and wars in Europe and the Middle East threaten the world order.
A Russian victory in Ukraine could throw the world into disarray, transform the global economy, and trigger nuclear proliferation and further conflicts, Jamie Dimon warned.

"It could be a potential disaster," the JPMorgan CEO told The Wall Street Journal this week.

Dimon emphasized that Russia has invaded a free, democratic nation and threatened nuclear war to deter resistance.

"We've never had nuclear blackmail before, which is also teaching the whole world that maybe having nuclear weapons is a pretty good thing because people will be afraid of you — you can abuse a neighbor if you feel like it," he said.

The boss of America's biggest bank cautioned that if Russia conquers Ukraine, other countries may question whether they can rely on the US to defend them from military assaults, or to have their back on the "economic battlefield," Dimon said.

Governments worldwide will reassess the security of their food, energy, and other critical resources, and might decide to partner with other countries, he added.

"I'm a little worried that if Russia wins that war, you're going to see the world enter a little bit of chaos as people realign alliances and economic relationships."

The billionaire banker has been sounding the alarm on the tumultuous global environment for a while.

"The geopolitical situation is probably the most complicated and dangerous since World War II," he told the Economic Club of New York this week, adding that the world order is being "challenged."

In his annual letter to JPMorgan shareholders this month, Dimon pointed to the wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East, the US and China clashing over issues like trade, and the recent spike in terrorist attacks as evidence that a historically "treacherous" era may have begun.

In a September interview, Dimon flagged the Russia-Ukraine war as the greatest threat to the world, and said countries were worrying about relying on other countries for everything from food and energy to microchips and rare-earth metals.

He added that the battle could be an "inflection point for the free democratic world," and said there's "no playbook" for navigating the current geopolitical melee.

A snip from the latest:

All of this comes on the heels of another interesting article from the NYTimes:

https://archive.is/wmSek
Some may recall I covered such efforts as the DOD’s Project Maven before, in articles like this one.

But in the new article, David E. Sanger writes that the results of this combined Google-DARPA effort to institute an AI-driven ‘back-end’ to process vast troves of battlefield surveillance data have in fact been ‘mixed’.

How’s this for admissions?

The first two years of the conflict have also shown that Russia is adapting, much more quickly than anticipated, to the technology that gave Ukraine an initial edge.
And another which corroborates the earlier GLSDB snafu:

In the first year of the war, Russia barely used its electronic warfare capabilities. Today it has made full use of them, confusing the waves of drones the United States has helped provide. Even the fearsome HIMARS missiles that President Biden agonized over giving to Kyiv, which were supposed to make a huge difference on the battlefield, have been misdirected at times as the Russians learned how to interfere with guidance systems.
The article goes on to name and describe the physical heart of this NATO ‘backend’ I’ve described for over a year now:

It names ex-Google CEO Schmidt as being the main impetus behind Ukraine’s new push toward autonomous AI drones which can hunt human targets on their own after their signal has been cut by EW.

Ultimately though the article confesses that these technological leaps will not be enough to defeat Russia, which is adapting just as quickly to battlefield developments, yet actually has the manufacturing girding on top of that which Ukraine lacks. In short: both sides hold key asymmetrical advantages over the other, but Russia is inching on the West’s advantage of satellite ISR—particularly the constellation of Starlink satellites—while Ukraine is not making any headway toward Russia’s massive munitions and armor manufacturing overmatch.

end snip more at link:

What obligations did we have to defend the Ukraine. It’s not nato. How could we even pretend to be willing to defend the Ukraine? If Ukraine wanted to defend themselves, we could sell them weapons but that’s about it.
If we have a defensive agreement with a country, then we should honor it.

The most bizarre thing happened in Odessa (Region) today.

Ukrainian channels posted how they used a Yak-52 training aircraft to shoot down a Russian "Orlan-10" recon drone.

Turns out they shot down a Ukrainian UJ-22 drone, while the Yak-52 was also fired upon from the ground but got lucky.

So long story short... Ukrainians used an old training plane to shoot down a Ukrainian drone, while almost shooting down their own training plane.

True - Article 5 is not in play - that is why you are hearing EU nations calling for EU troops - BUT NOT UNDER NATO - getting into the mix. Naturally the US would be fine with this - having gone through the bulk of the Ukrainian men - just inject EU troops (but not US). The US gets to spin up Europe to keep the pressure on Russia while keeping their hands clean - giving the Russians no "legal" reason to strike US assets.
However should the US take an active part - then their AWACs flying over the Black Sea would be valid targets as would targets in the US mainland. No - much better to keep all the destruction and loss of life in Europe.

Ukraine Withdraws Abrams Tanks From Frontlines After Russian Drone Attacks

BY TYLER DURDEN
SUNDAY, APR 28, 2024 - 06:00 AM
Authored by Will Porter via The Libertarian Institute,
The Ukrainian military has opted to withdraw its US-supplied M1 Abrams main battle tanks from the front lines due to the threat posed by Russian drones, American officials told the Associated Press. Kiev has reportedly lost several of the tanks since their long-delayed deployment in February.

The decision came as Moscow increasingly relies on UAVs for round-the-clock surveillance and air strikes, making the Abrams "too difficult… to operate without detection or coming under attack," the AP reported on Thursday. The tanks have been removed from the fight for an unspecified period as Kiev and Washington work to "reset tactics," Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chairman Adm. Christopher Grady told the outlet.
Photo published by the Russian military reportedly shows a US-made Abrams main battle tank after it was crippled during fighting near the city of Avdeevka.
"When you think about the way the fight has evolved, massed armor in an environment where unmanned aerial systems are ubiquitous can be at risk," Grady added. "Now, there is a way to do it. We’ll work with our Ukrainian partners, and other partners on the ground, to help them think through how they might use that, in that kind of changed environment now, where everything is seen immediately."

Though the United States agreed to provide 31 Abrams in January 2023, the armor took months to arrive, and even longer before they first saw combat in February. Ukraine has so far lost at least five of the tanks, according to the AP, with Russian forces claiming several kills since the Abrams was first spotted on the battlefield. At least one of the tanks was reportedly crippled with a cheaply made kamikaze drone, part of Moscow’s growing fleet of surveillance and armed UAVs.

The ubiquity of drones in the conflict has meant "there isn’t open ground that you can just drive across without fear of detection," another senior defense official told the AP, explaining the decision to sideline the Abrams.

The move comes as Washington steps up assistance to Ukrainian troops following a lull in support, with Congress passing a massive $61 billion military aid package last weekend after months of gridlock in the House.

The Pentagon immediately approved a $1 billion shipment on Wednesday, including artillery rounds, air defense missiles, infantry fighting vehicles and a long list of other gear – the largest round of US aid in several months. Another $6 billion weapons package was announced on Friday which is to include munitions for the US-made Patriot air defense system.
Following a failed counteroffensive last summer, Kiev has repeatedly urged for additional weapons from its NATO sponsors, warning it would continue to lose ground to Russian forces without Western-made aircraft, armor and long-range missiles.

On Wednesday, the US State Department revealed it had already sent Ukraine its first shipment of longer-range ATACMS missiles last month, saying the decision was not announced “in order to maintain operational security for Ukraine at their request.”

Weren't these the wonder weapon that was going to change the course of the war?

Following a failed counteroffensive last summer, Kiev has repeatedly urged for additional weapons from its NATO sponsors, warning it would continue to lose ground to Russian forces without Western-made aircraft, armor and long-range missiles.

On Wednesday, the US State Department revealed it had already sent Ukraine its first shipment of longer-range ATACMS missiles last month, saying the decision was not announced “in order to maintain operational security for Ukraine at their request.”

Weren't these the wonder weapon that was going to change the course of the war?
If they aren't going to use them . . . are they going to give em back or barter em for coke?

Fast-Paced Russian Offensive Yields Over a Dozen Conquered Cities and Villages, as Ukrainian Morale Is Collapsing Along the Front, With Over 100K Troops Deserting Their Positions

In the much-hyped Summer 2023 offensive, Ukrainian troops repeatedly failed to breach the formidable Russian defensive fortifications of the ‘Surovikin Line’, despite hundreds of billions of western military aid in money and equipment.

As the Ukrainian offensive efforts wound down, Russia took the initiat5ive fully leveraging its superior firepower and better trained and equipped troops, and by using a ‘death by a thousand cuts’ strategy, kept nibbling at the 600 mile-long frontline, keeping the badly outmaneuvered Ukrainians always in a rush to scramble reinforcements to and fro.

The result, in these last four months, have been quite different than in Kiev’s case, and the localities conquered by the Russian Federation forces have now amounted to well over a dozen cities and villages.

Too few of them, both Abrams and Leo's, to make any telling use of them. The level of propaganda leveraged upon them has been over the top. The M777s have been under reported in effectiveness IMHO in comparison.

What do Russia's Turtle Tanks Indicate?

Been a lot of jokes and head scratching over these - one-offs or something new?
Good article that indicates this is likely something we will see a bit more of.

New assault tactics are now being devised to take advantage of this new device which will greatly increase the stretch of open ground assaults from the current 1-2km to 5-10km depending on the depth/severity of minefields which become the only real hindrance to advance of a column of carapace equipped AFVs and other combined arms. NATO has nothing in its armories currently capable of deterring carapace clad AFVs aside from strong reliable anti-tank weapons of which it has some; but as with most every other thing, not nearly enough nor the capacity to increase production of those items most in demand.

Reinforcements Into Their Ocheretyne Breakthrough. For The Ukrainians, The Situation Is Desperate.

Even Western mainstream media can no longer ignore the clear Russian advances.

Six days after breaking through Ukrainian lines west of Avdiivka, Russian brigades and regiments are slowly widening their salient—a five-mile-deep knife wound plunging into Ukrainian territory, its point lodged in the village of Ocheretyne.

The situation is desperate for the exhausted Ukrainian brigades in the area. It’s a foregone conclusion that the Ukrainians will lose a few villages around the Ocheretyne axis.

The real risk, however, is that the Ukrainian Tavriya Operational-Strategic Group—the command responsible for forces west of Adviivka—will have no choice but to cut its losses, retreat a few miles to the west and reconsolidate along a new defensive line threading north to southwest of Ocheretyne.

It’s apparent the Russians have, in all, more than 10,000 troops in or near the salient. Just 3,000 or so Ukrainians oppose them,

Same - EVENT - 2 totally different accounts - one of the problems following this war is the SPIN -
Which is correct - ???

The most bizarre thing happened in Odessa (Region) today.

Ukrainian channels posted how they used a Yak-52 training aircraft to shoot down a Russian "Orlan-10" recon drone.

Turns out they shot down a Ukrainian UJ-22 drone, while the Yak-52 was also fired upon from the ground but got lucky.

So long story short... Ukrainians used an old training plane to shoot down a Ukrainian drone, while almost shooting down their own training plane.

Maybe Ukraine propagandist need to practice their "glorious anti-orc incidents" before filming them for official release. :jstr:

That is the problem - so many stories have just been made up or exaggerated that almost anything coming out of Ukraine is discounted. Somewhat the same on the Russian side. While the official Russian releases tend to be just facts and numbers - some Pro-Russian posters also tend to exaggerate.

These "events" do pop up every few weeks - interesting but in general of no value in attempting to analyze the current state of the war or project how it is likely going.

Trying to keep focused on the BIG PICTURE is best - but generally boring - likely why we tend to noticed the flashing object.

Ukraine commanders warn: "The Donbass falls in October"

The mood on the 1500-kilometer front is bad. Despite the $ 61 billion in military aid from Washington, many of Selenski's fighters no longer believe in victory. Blick asked the Donbass commanders – and found out about a shocking scenario.

Blick spoke to half a dozen commanders on the Ukrainian Eastern Front. Ukraine will lose the war, the tenor said. « “The Russians will capture Donbass by October, then the conflict will freeze, and we will have to negotiate with Putin,” predicts Sergei, an officer of the brigade located in Chasovoy Yar.

Frontline workers name three reasons that could lead to such a situation.

The first
is the lack of people. The number of brigades in many places has been reduced to 30-40 percent.
“Continuing mobilization will not save us,” says officer Alexander from the 93rd brigade. “Those who are now being drafted and trained will not be with us until October. By then we will have lost the entire Donetsk region.”

The second reason is that new US aid “comes too late.” And “the latest injection of military aid alone will not help Ukraine win.” "We can slow the Russians down as much as possible, but we can't defeat them," says an officer named Miroslav.

The third reason is the leadership style of Commander-in-Chief Syrsky, which the publication calls “the paralyzing effect of the Butcher” (recalling that the future commander-in-chief received this nickname during the bloody defense of Bakhmut, which he led). The newspaper writes that Syrsky's appointment "caused a bad mood in many places at the front."

Weren't these the wonder weapon that was going to change the course of the war?
One of the many. Which have all fizzled. I guess it took the Rooskies longer to figure out the HIMARS and the counter-battery radars as much as anything, but they're all being destroyed routinely now. You know they're actively hunting the Patriot launchers but they've stumbled onto more than one of their storage warehouses.

Looks like US is about to get schooled in the realm of cause and effect...
I think the Washington elites just have a hard time processing the idea that they can't just do whatever they have an urge to do without any recourse whatsoever. You'd think they'd learn, but not so far.

Any money sitting somewhere which they get their eyes fixated on automatically becomes theirs, far as they're concerned.

I've kind of wondered when they're going to start denying Fort Knox gold reserves being returned to their rightful nation-state owners.
