U.S. forces launch third round of strikes against Houthis in Yemen: Report
Ben Wolfgang
U.S. forces on Tuesday conducted a third round of airstrikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, U.S. officials told the Associated Press, just hours after a missile launched by the Iran-backed group hit another commercial vessel in the Red Sea.
U.S. officials told the AP that the American strikes targeted Houthi anti-ship missile capabilities. The group has used such weapons to wreak havoc on maritime traffic in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the past two months, saying it was doing so in solidarity with Palestinians fighting Israel in Gaza .
U.S. Central Command, which oversees American military activity in the Middle East, did not immediately respond to a request for comment seeking more detail on Tuesday’s strikes.
The U.S. attacks mark the third round of bombings against Houthi positions in less than a week. U.S. and British forces launched a massive air assault against the Houthis last Thursday, and American troops followed up with a strike on a Houthi radar site Friday.
But the Houthis are still disrupting maritime traffic in the region. On Tuesday, the Houthis claimed responsibility after a missile struck the Malta-flagged bulk carrier Zografia in the Red Sea. No one was injured.
On Monday, Houthi rebels struck a U.S.-owned cargo ship traveling off the country’s coast near the Gulf of Aden on Monday. No injuries were reported. On Sunday, the Houthis fired a missile toward the USS Laboon, a warship traveling through the southern Red Sea. The missile was shot down and did not cause any damage or injuries, U.S. officials said.

The Houthis have launched about 30 attacks against commercial ships over the past two months. While Houthi leaders have said their Red Sea campaign is retaliation toward Israel for its war in the Gaza Strip, many of the ships targeted seemingly have no connection to Jerusalem.
