CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The City of Charlottesville will remove a 93-year-old statue of Civil War general Robert E. Lee from a city park named for Lee. Charlottesville City Council also voted Monday to rename the park that sits on the Virginia Civil War Trails.

Monday night’s 3-2 vote came after months of debate.

The swing vote, cast by Councilman Bob Fenwick, said he delayed his decision to weigh things like the cost of removing the statue and the impact it has had on the community.

“There is not just one way to honor history. Particularly at the expense of our neighbors,” Fenwick told WCAV.

The cost of moving the statue was determined to be around $300,000.

Charlottesville Vice Mayor Wes Bellamy told those at the meeting who voiced their opinions that he hoped the two sides could one day see eye-to-eye on the issue.

“Just because we disagree on this issue doesn’t mean anyone who disagrees with me is my enemy,” he said. “The only way for us to move forward is for us to love each other, understand each other, and that we have to do this together.”

The commies have to rewrite history. General Lee did not believe in slavery. President Lincoln wanted him to lead the Union Army. You should read General Lees letter to President Lincoln. It is very telling of the times. True history that should not be ignored.

I should add that after the war General Lee and his wife devoted the rest of their lives to the education of the black people. They felt is was a great injustice that blacks were not allowed to be educated while slaves. Commies take the same stance. You are not allowed to be educated while a slave.

Robert E. Lee statue to be removed from Charlottesville park...I'll take it, and when the people of Charlottesville pull their collective heads out of their nether regions, I may loan it back to them.

We also have a statue of albert pike in Judicial Square in DC, the only southerner to have a statue there apparently, when you look into satanist pike's background you will scratch your head as to why not a single person has mentioned removing that particular statue. pike and all he stood for is offensive.

Perhaps you need to write a letter to the editor of the Charlotte newspapers and teach them their history. Who is behind this crap anyway?

Charlottesville is a college town-it's a left wing wonderland. They keep doing stuff like that and parents might stop sending their kids to that college. The U. of VA was started by none other than Thomas Jefferson-one wonders how they will erase him (and his slave holder history) out of the official narrative.

If we had kids, I wouldn't send them to any college in VA, DC and particularly the people's republic of Maryland. I deal with graduates from these so called colleges daily-I'm not impressed, not at all.

Not to drift the thread too far, but just wanted to throw in that grandmother's middle name was Lee, one uncle's middle name is Lee, the first part of my middle name is Leigh, and I was named after 2 great-grandmothers, one of whom was named Lee Anne. I know at least 2 great-great-(great?-)grandfathers on my mother's side fought on the side of the South in North Carolina.

I think that most people in public school are taught that most whites in the South owned slaves, rather than the tiny 4% that actually owned slaves (and why don't they ever talk about the black slave owners?).

I don't think I've ever typed this, but Bellamy is a dishonest, hateful, racist, ignorant ******. Fenwick is a self-hating white inferiorist who will happily throw wood on the West's funeral pyre. To Hell with them all. They make me ashamed that I grew up in Virginia.

I may be as Damn Yankee as they come, hailing from Minnesota, but I read the book, "The South Was Right", and now, I understand it really was right, and how they suffered from that unjust war.

I think the Black Lives Matter crowd should have to pay for the removal of this historic monument.

It's certainly not fair the Southern whites have to bear the cost, along with the despair of losing such a valuable piece of their heritage. What an outrage!

I agree , if the blacks want Lee down pay for it
They have been giving privelages from whites since the 60s and now they think the whites owe it to them just because they whine racist

Despite the fact it was voted to be taken down, they still haven't taken down Gen. Lee in New Orleans because there isn't a contractor willing to do it. They know, their business will dry up and become toast.

More good will come out of this than bad, IMO.

There are leftist liberals and rock sold Conservatives and a whole bunch in
the middle who haven't gotten pissed off enough to go active either way.

The leftist liberals will not attract more fence sitters to their side, but these
overreaching actions by the left will get more of those pre-disposed to come
our way to finally get with the program.

I silently cheer on every inane excess and outrageous protest by the left, as
most decent Americans find BLM and flag burning and highway blocking idiots
repulsive, which sends them scurrying over to our side to join sane patriots.

I hope the left does not get a clue anytime soon, and start to become more
reasonable.

Make sense?

If they're going to take down the monument to whom the park was designated, to be consistent they should also demolish the park. Turning it into places like black-only Planned Parenthood clinics, anonymous HIV testing centers (for queers/blacks/IV druggies), and emporiums specializing in accessories for sub-10 pound dogs owned by childless >45-YO liberal women all come to mind as apt replacements...

Thanks for this update, I was going to mention the one in New Orleans at Lee Circle, and Andrew Jackson is also on the chopping block. Andrew Jackson saved the city of New Orleans.

Left-Wing Agitators Escalate War on American History

Virginia gubernatorial candidate attacked by mob while defending Robert E. Lee monument

by Edmund Kozak | Updated 13 Feb 2017 at 6:21 PM

Virginia Republican gubernatorial candidate Corey Stewart was attacked on Saturday by a mob of protesters in front of the Robert E. Lee monument in Lee Park in Charlottesville, Virginia, in the latest liberal assault on Southern history and heritage.

“The Charlottesville City Council is trying to erase history. They are desecrating the monument to one of Virginia’s greatest heroes,” Stewart said, surrounded by hostile, chanting protesters. “I ask all Virginians to stand with me to protest the Council’s decision and reverse this politically correct madness.”

The Lee monument in Charlottesville is the latest Confederate monument targeted by left-wing activists for removal. In November 2016, a Confederate monument near a University of Louisville campus, which had been erected in 1895, was removed.

In September, the Alexandria, Virginia, city council voted unanimously to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway and request permission from the Virginia General Assembly to move a statue of a Confederate soldier that has long stood in the city’s historic Old Town.

Also in the fall of 2016, a Baltimore city commission recommended that the city’s Lee and Jackson Monument be removed.

At the end of 2015, the New Orleans City Council voted to remove four Confederate monuments in the city, monuments to Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis, P.G.T. Beauregard, and the Battle of Liberty Place.

In July 2015, the Birmingham, Alabama, parks and recreation board voted unanimously to look into removing a Confederate monument from the city’s Linn Park. The stated reason for this effort to erase the nation’s history is that Confederate monuments are offensive and inherently celebrate racism.

“Those who call for their removal believe that to celebrate the Confederacy is to ignore the role of white supremacy in the Confederacy, the use of Confederate symbols by segregationists in the civil rights era, and perhaps most important the attempt since the end of the Civil War to deny the importance and heritage of slavery and racism in American society,” said Gaines M. Foster, professor of history at Louisiana State University and author of “Ghosts of the Confederacy.”

That position, however, assumes that slavery was the sole raison d’être of the Confederacy, a point that has been widely disputed by historians. Other motivations for secession put forward by historians have included “states’ rights” — a desire for liberty in the face of an overbearing, anti-constitutional federal government — and a desire to break free from the North’s increasingly industrial economic system.

“The radical Left is not satisfied with mere political correctness,” Stewart, the GOP gubernatorial candidate in Virginia, told LifeZette Monday. “Unsurprisingly, they’ve decided to ratchet up the violence and militance. The Left’s tyrannical political correctness is aimed not only at destroying Virginia’s proud heritage, but further seeks to oppress all those who think differently than they do until there are no more among us who think differently. Diversity of thought is not allowed in the Left’s utopia, even if it requires literally erasing history.”

Others point to the fact that secession and slavery were driven and protected, respectively, by the Democratic Party as a possible motivation for liberals’ desire to see Confederate imagery removed.

“It’s pretty simple to see why Democrats hate history that pertains to the Civil War. It reminds all Americans of the time the Democratic Party ripped the country apart,” said Eddie Zipperer, a political science professor at Georgia Military College.

“Republicans, who were on the correct side of the Civil War, believe it is an important event in our history. Democrats, on the other hand, would love to erase it from the American memory,” Zipperer said.

Regardless of the real intent behind the drive to remove Confederate imagery from the public sphere, using individual subjective offense as criteria for removing monuments or renaming highways sets a dangerous precedent.

Yale announced recently that it was changing the name of Calhoun College. “The decision to change a college’s name is not one we take lightly, but John C. Calhoun’s legacy as a white supremacist and a national leader who passionately promoted slavery as a ‘positive good’ fundamentally conflicts with Yale’s mission and values,” Yale President Peter Salovey said in a statement.

It’s not difficult to see where this could end. There have already been calls to remove statues of President Andrew Jackson in various places, and he is slated to be erased from the $20 bill and replaced by Harriet Tubman.

Students at two colleges, the University of Missouri and the College of William and Mary, have petitioned for the removal of statues of Thomas Jefferson. In 2015, students at the University of Texas actually petitioned to remove a statue of George Washington.

If the possibility that a monument to, or symbol of, an event or figure in American history might offend non-white people is the sole criteria for justifying its removal, almost nothing of historical significance is safe.

"This is our heritage. It is our history," Stewart said on Saturday. "Robert E. Lee was a great American and Virginian. After the Civil War, General Lee spent the rest of his life working to reconcile and heal the country. He deserves our respect."

"We're fortunate we're intervening while they're just destroying books and statues before they move to fully do away with our ability to hold opinions contrary to theirs," Stewart said Monday. "Make no mistake about it. The Left's behavior is pure, unadulterated totalitarianism. That is why we must draw the line in the sand right here and right now. "

" Barack knows that we are going to have to make sacrifices; we are going to have to change our conversation; we’re going to have to change our traditions, our history; we’re going to have to move into a different place as a nation to provide the kind of future we all want desperately for our children."
Michelle Obama quote.
Looks like the different place they "all" want desperately for "our" children is taking place.

Fight to Save Lee Statue Heats Up On Fronts - Chaos Erupts as Charlottesville Braces for Costly Lawsuits and Protests

We have received numerous inquiries for updates on the legal proceedings and other plans for Charlottesville after the vote to attempt to remove the RE Lee statue and rename LEE Park. We have some new information to share with you…

From a legal aspect, we promised Charlottesville that there would be a heavy price to pay and we intend to deliver on that promise. Our friends at “Friends of C’Ville Monuments” have been busy preparing the first lawsuits, and we expect that they will be filed in the next few days. In the meantime, our attorney sent a letter to the City Attorney and City Council outlining our plans to follow up with more litigation over the next few months, and requesting the City Attorney do his job and stop this nonsense.
On his advice, we will be setting up a separate fund that will be used not only to fund whatever legal action we deem necessary over the next few months, but will be a general fund which can be used to fight any and all future attempts to remove monuments in the Commonwealth…and to erect new ones to add to the landscape. Stay tuned for more information on how you can help.

In the meantime, the Governor’s race in Virginia has heated up after the swift and strong reaction by two of the Republican candidates. As detailed in an earlier email, Corey Stewart and Denver Riggelman make strong statements condemning the vote to remove the monument, and vowed to fight to end the PC whitewashing of our history and heritage. Meanwhile, Fellow Republican candidate Ed Gillespie, a political strategist whom Stewart derides as “Establishment Ed,” said in a statement that he doesn’t support moving statues but that such decisions are...ready for this... "local issues". Gillespie is leading the Republican field in polling and campaign cash for the June primary. The fourth Republican candidate for governor, State Sen. Frank Wagner (Virginia Beach), says he opposes removing the statue, calling it “political correctness run amok.”

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Tom Perriello, who represented Charlottesville in Congress from 2009 to 2011, supports the statue’s removal as part of creating a more inclusive environment. Lt. Gov Ralph Northam, the Democratic front-runner in the gubernatorial contest, has said local communities should make decisions about Confederate symbols, but held up Charlottesville as a model for creating a “welcoming community.”

Disappointing, but not surprising that the leading Republican in the race has decided to “play it safe” and side with Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who used the “local issue” excuse to veto legislation that would have closed a possible loophole in our veterans memorial statute. Corey Stewart not only made a strong statement, he visited the RE Lee statue on Saturday, and was attacked by some of Charlottesville’s local social justice thugs. Good video here… https://www.facebook.com/pg/CoreyStewartVA/videos/

Corey has also planned a follow up press conference in Charlottesville for NEXT Tuesday, February 21st, at 5:30 pm at Charlottesville City Hall. We urge EVERYONE to make an effort to attend and support his efforts! https://www.facebook.com/events/1255311257886567/

Finally, we have been very busy fielding calls, messages, and emails from concerned citizens in and around Charlottesville. The result is the acquisition of land for THREE new Confederate Battle Flag Memorials to be erected in and around Charlottesville, one of which will be a massive one on Interstate 64. We are finalizing details, but expect to move quickly to get these up and flying and need your help. If you would like to help make this happen, please consider a gift to the Va Flaggers Memorial Battle Flag Projects Fund. Make checks payable to “Va Flaggers” and mail to P.O. Box 547, Sandston, VA 23150, or contribute through PayPal here… http://www.vaflaggers.com/i95flagdonate.html

We truly believe the tide is turning in the Commonwealth. Efforts to remove the Confederate monument in Alexandria failed after local legislators refused City Council’s request that they petition the legislature for permission to move it. Mayoral candidates in Richmond and Portsmouth who supported monument removal were defeated or removed from office, and a groundswell of anger against the PC attempt to whitewash our history and heritage is growing. Even in Charlottesville, the façade is crumbling. Disgraced Vice-Mayor Wes Bellamy, who was behind the push to remove the monument, faces a recall challenge in court, after volunteers collected enough signatures from registered voters to petition the court. This after new vile tweets were found and released over the weekend, which use graphic language and slurs against homosexuals. http://www.jasonkessler.net/blog/new-anti-gay-bellamy-tweets-surface His partner in monument destruction, Kristin Szakos, has announced she will not seek re-election, and several pro monument Charlottesville citizens have stepped up to say they will run for office.

We are confident that not only will the Lee Monument be saved, but ALL monuments and memorials in Virginia will remain, but we are determined that this is, now more than ever, the time to push forward and not let up, even for a moment.

Stay tuned for more information and ways that you can join us!
