TRANS Proper pulling over for traffic stop

Arkansas. They lit her up, speeding, I’m guessing, and followed her for 2 1/2 minutes. Daylight, dry, plenty of shoulder. She was going about 50, no attempt to run, but also no attempt to follow a lawful order to pull over. Finally pitted and rollover, no serious injury, especially her mouth. Claims she has every right to travel at normal speed until she feels safe, and she didn’t feel safe with trooper following her. Seriously pissed, threatening to sue, of course.
Having watched a few of these, I will stop when they tell me to, if there’s not room for his safety, he should wait to light me up until it is safe.
Discussion?

Seems reasonable.

One would assume in her case he "lit her up" (i.e. blue lights?) because he thought it WAS safe. 2-1/2 miles is more along the lines of "ignoring him."

May be one of those "SovCits" you hear about? "I can govern myself and don't need the restraint of law."

Which may be true but one CAN make a mistake in unenlightened self-interest.

Watch the video, she was misinformed as to her rights and duties. Seems like we should all have a refresher course on rules of the road.

Looking at it from a woman's perspective . . . not all cops are good. I would have wanted to pull over in front of a business (there might have been one off the road) since it is a lightly driven highway in a rural area. She should have at least put on emergency blinkers and called 911 to make sure it was legit and that there would be a proper record of the stop. Was it a marked or unmarked vehicle? If it was unmarked (I didn't watch it to the end) I may have not stopped either. I think pitting was a bit excessive if she wasn't wanted or a felon. Was it just because she was speeding?

Turn on your flashers. Call 911 and inform them that you have an officer behind you, that you are going to pull over at a gas station off the next off ramp. Or whatever the closest "safe" place is. And it will need to be close.

But don't just keep driving unless you want this to happen.

I saw it on Natural State Transparency on YouTube. Arkansas is the only state it shows cop chases and Arkansas has a lot of them. Sometimes they chase a vehicle for several miles at very high speeds before doing a pit maneuver. It is not rare to see the speeder killed in the process. A recent one showed a trooper chasing a black pickup at about 100mph or maybe more. When the cop did the pit maneuver his push bumper on his car got entangled in the truck's bumper. The truck rolled over and the force launched the cop car up over the truck where it broke off a light pole before coming down and ending up on its top. The guy in the truck was dead and several other cops in the chase got the cop out and were giving him first aid. It never says if the cop survived.

there was no reason to do a pit maneuver on someone going 47mph. was it called in. were there warrants?
i am a believer that we need police. this cop was over zealous and could have killed someone for driving 47mph. he should have called for backup and box her in. i see a law suit.
this is like police chases that are well over 100mph. in san antonio, if it's just a simple pull over, not like a bank robbery or some current felony, protocol is end the chase.

There is a lot of carnage from some of these chases. Death, death or injury to 3rd parties, property destruction of 3rd parties, a lot of dangerous and possibly deadly moments for all parties in the chase. If they catch real bad guys or gals it's sort of worth it. But a lot of these idiots run when they're not in a lot of trouble. A lot of the runners are just psycho too.

This society is out of control... the anarchist, drug dealers, thieves, child phuckers, junkies have no understanding that the cops they hate so badly are the only thing keeping them safe and alive.....

John Law is a true believer in a legal system that needs to be cast aside.... slowly John Law will awaken from his slumber... he just needs to see a few more of his compatriots killed and maimed by the vermin...

There is a growing segment of society that realizes the vermin need to go into a ditch before any semblance of civility can be resurrected from the ashes....

Eventually the vermin will be hunted like feral swine....

We're in Arkansas, and came up on one such scene not too long ago. Idiot refused to pull over, several police including Trooper followed him through an intersection. We saw them attempt a pit maneuver. Idiot was able to correct and keep going until a few miles out. They pitted him again, rolled truck, perp died.

Stupid really does hurt sometimes.

Yep it does, even when the public does what it's supposed to:

ASP "chase" kills motorcycle rider.

I watched a video on this very thing not too long ago that dealt with a pregnant woman who was pitted on an interstate and hit the wall. She, too, was trying to find a safe spot to pull over when the Trooper pitted her. She had even put on her 4 ways and slowed down. The Arkansas driver handbook says the same thing. If you're unsure it is the Police, 2 steps could be taken. 1 find a safe place lighted area, pull over, and 2 if you are not sure if it is the police dial 911 to verify it is the police before pulling over in order for them to get someone to you.

This is a prime example why police WILL be able to render a vehicle inoperable.

We had a thread on this topic within the last week.

I can see the argument about a safe place. I can see how some soon to be detained person could weaponize common sense right out the window.

I bet she was the kid that sat in the back seat one inch from her brother chanting:

"I'm not touching you. I'm not touching you"

ETA: I watched the first 8 minutes. That foul-mouthed woman was a prime example why the open-handed eye-crossing bitch-smack was invented.

30 years ago there were a bunch of idiots pretending to be cops in unmarked cars pulling women over in NY. They had all the bells and whistles… siren, headlights that flashed alternating left and right, lights in the grill, and often that magnetic spiraling red light they could reach out the window and pop on their roof. That was when official unmarked cars started to be required to call for a marked vehicle to complete the stop.

It was all over the news. Women were advised to drive to the nearest police station or a very public, well lit and populated area before pulling over. In later years, women were advised to carry a cell phone to call 911 if they were being pulled over. Dispatch could verify the stop was legit or send actual officers to protect the woman and arrest the imposters.

The car in the video was a marked police car. She was simply stupid a million different ways. The cop though… freaking gung ho rookie. He should have called for back up and never attempted that pit maneuver. He had no restraint in his voice as he led her to his car. Probably stressed because knew he acted impulsively and without regard for public safety. For all he knew, there could have been a child in her car. If I were his mother, I‘d slap him upside his head for being such a jack boot on the road.

I’m all in support of cops. Just wish the rookies were not allowed out on their own until they’ve plenty of experience riding along with an older, more experienced, and simply wiser officer. If you can’t keep your cool dealing with stupid people, you don’t belong wearing a badge.

I wouldn't do that job for multiple millions of dollars.

Rural area - out in the counties, often there are no back-up units within an hour's drive. I don't like this pit maneuver simply because people do get killed. The woman could as well had a carload of unsecured kids with her. It also puts the officer in danger, as it doesn't always work out well for them either.

Solution? I dunno. Get the plate number, inform the municipalities in the area and try to keep up until you have help.

Perps? Stop when the cops tell ya, or risk getting somebody else and yourself killed.

Clueless idiots on the road when a cop comes on you with lights and sirens? Pay attention, move over and stop.

You can't outrun a radio.

And there are those "roadway thingies" not to mention shooting out a tire.

^^^This. I was taught that, if you’re being called to pull over, and the area is deserted, wait until you got to a populated area and then pull over. Not only are there bad cops, but there are people who impersonate cops, get women to pull over in deserted areas, then rape them.

A lot of it also depends on whether or not you know you have been in the wrong.

If this woman had been tooling along at 50 mph (not speeding or driving erratically/dangerously) and didn't have any outstanding warrants - ALL of which this one very well might be guilty - I doubt she would have attracted any cop-like attention. If she was a model citizen/driver getting pulled over, sure - go ahead and suspect something hinky.

A guilty perp running is what makes up almost all of these stories.

I remember a White Bronco, no one did anything about. One white Brono on an empty freeway, followed by a dozen cops.

I've been pulled over a couple of times. And I would stick my arm out the window, point ahead to a spot where I would pull over. That way they know, I know they are back there, and they know I'm going to do what they say as soon as I can. Always seemed to work out.

So we don't pull to the right and stop whenever lights and sirens are running? What if he was going to an emergency? What you are suggesting is NOT LEGAL. Pull your vehicle over!

Once I got pulled over and was on a busy street. I put on my emergency flashers and pulled into a residential neighborhood a couple of blocks down. At first the officer was mad, wanted to know why I didn't stop immediately. Once I explained that I was concerned about him getting out of his car on a busy street and was just trying to find a safer spot for him he relaxed. Let me go with a warning. But it was only a couple of blocks.
