Problem child Ben & Jerry's getting boot from parent after years of political controversy

Multinational conglomerate Unilever, the owner of some 400 brands, announced Tuesday it is spinning off its ice cream business — including major names like Ben & Jerry's, Breyers, Magnum, Popsicle and Klondike — after more than a century.

The consumer goods giant said the move is part of a growth strategy to create a leaner business. At the same time, by shedding Ben & Jerry's, Unilever is ridding itself of a longtime headache.

Since its founding in 1978, Ben & Jerry's has been known for its left-leaning advocacy, and the Vermont-based ice cream maker was able to maintain an independent board of directors to continue its progressive activism even after it sold to Unilever in 2000.
But in recent years, the unique structure of the deal that allowed Ben & Jerry's to wade into controversial issues without interference has pulled Unilever into the fray, too.

The biggest lightening rod began in July 2021, when Ben & Jerry’s announced it would no longer sell its products to Israelis in the West Bank, which the company refers to as "Occupied Palestinian Territory."

The move sparked outrage from both sides of the political aisle amid accusations that the company was boycotting Israel as part of the boycott, divest, sanctions (BDS) movement, which Ben & Jerry's denied. Israel threatened to take action against Unilever over the move, and U.S. lawmakers called on the Securities and Exchange Commission to launch a probe into the parent company.
Unilever, which has repeatedly distanced itself from Ben & Jerry's political takes and said it has never supported the BDS movement, sold the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream operations in Israel in June 2022 in an attempt to stem the controversy, but its subsidiary's activism has continued to tarnish the brand and drag Unilever with it.

Ben & Jerry's was hit with its own boycott threat last year after the company angered some Americans on Independence Day with a post on Twitter (now X) that read, "This 4th of July, it's high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it."

Several U.S. states have divested their public employee retirement funds from Unilever over Ben & Jerry's ending sales of its products in parts of Israel, including Arizona, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Texas and most recently North Carolina.
North Carolina State Treasurer Dale Folwell, a Republican, told FOX Business in an interview this year that it’s not likely Unilever anticipated allowing Ben & Jerry's to have its own board would lead to so many problems.

"I don’t know the people at Ben & Jerry’s. I respect their entrepreneurship. I think when they signed the contract, Ben & Jerry’s anticipated something like this," said Folwell, also a 2024 candidate for governor.
"Unilever didn’t anticipate anything like this," he continued. "Generally, when a parent tells a kid not to do something, they expect them to listen."

Anybody else like me who's never even had a spoonful of their ice cream....ever...?
I'm an odd duck, I eat 2 flavors of ice cream. Mint chocolate chip, and Vanilla. I've been a breyers fan all of my life. If its not those flavors and not breyers I'll pass. Never had any interest in the offerings of ben and jerry's because of the stuff the put in the ice cream.

I give up.
Two nice Jewish boys not selling to Israel? I'm shocked. Not. LOL

I never ate their ice cream much. Maybe when they started I might have bought Cherry Garcia a few times, but that was it. I was never fond of their harping.

I love UNILEVER !!!!

had an ongoing biz relationship with one of their large facilities - a much larger corporate entity than I tried a blackmail threat against Unilever unless they ceased our relationship >>> the NJ corporate wasn't impressed - corporate council replied back with an invitation to discuss the threat in FED court ....

Cherry Garcia is good, but the stuff is so stupid expensive I never buy it. Then of course, a thinking person has to factor in those filthy old Communist hippies who are behind the brand. So - did another big conglomerate pick them up, or are they out on the street to peddle their own name again?

I wonder at the move going forward for Unilever. Ice cream is one of those products that, even in a Depression, people will scrimp to buy occasionally for comfort and a sense of normalcy. They dumped the whole sector. :shr:

Never have liked packaged ice cream.

We go to a small town ice cream store that makes theirs in the shop. It tastes like home made.

It’s a trip for us but we go regularly thru the summer months. They make the best old fashioned chocolate malt shake.

Back in my college days 1970’s at UVM in Burlington VT (some of us called Burlington Ho Chi Min City), I remember when student Ben and Jerry did their business major senior year project by opening a tiny ice creme shop in a closed gas station next to the bus station downtown. Just a class project back then. Heady days back then

I remember UVM had an ice cream place next to Williston Road and made their own ice cream. I think it was run by the agriculture students, they have a farm not too far from there you can see from the interstate. UVM did some big upgrades on campus in the late 1980's and removed that building.

One can afford to have Socialist/Communist Ideal - for a while...

Margaret Thatcher quote comes to mind.
“The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.”

DH likes their Cherry Garcia so I guess I'm a communist supporter because I don't give a you know what about their politics and I'm not going to quit buying it for him.
I’ve had their chunky monkey, but it’s been a long time since I’ve had any, maybe the 90’s, simply because I couldn’t find it here in Iowa.

You're not an odd duck. Mint chocolate chip is my favorite. And Breyer's vanilla is vanilla BEAN, unlike most vanilla ice cream that tastes like little more than milk and sugar.

There are several more flavors that I like, such as black raspberry, and peach (I haven't seen any of this since covid hit).

I bet they will pick up a couple of brands in a few years time, just not B&Js.

What little ice cream I buy is local stuff sold at Fareway, about a pint or so at a time. I eat about 2 - 3 pints a year, if that.

Favorite ice cream is Breyers Chocolate.

Have an acquaintance that is right around 60 and has worked there for 25+ years. Hopefully he can make to retirement and get all his stuff before they fall. Total 2nd Amendment guy, Class 3's, etc.

HyVee has a brand called Churn... it's dark chocolate moose tracks is to die for! Kemps makes a strawberry rhubarb that I like... and Blue Bunny used to make a black walnut ice cream that I absolutely adored but alas they no longer make that flavor. Raspberry sherbet is also a favorite.

They used English walnuts for the actual nut pieces.
