22" of pain and anguish - just waiting to shake your hand
over the last few years I've moved a few things up closer to the house that I used to plant down in the pasture. this is the 3'rd one of these I've killed in this little raised bed patch in the last 4 years. without exception EVERY ONE of them has been buried in the grass clippings I use to mulch the beds. I have NEVER in 20 plus years come up on one of them out in the open - moving from place to place - sunning on a rock pile - on the road. this one at 22" has been the smallest. here - take a closer look below

I've shared this with you to reinforce the ABSOLUTE NECESSITY to AVOID blindly reaching into your cucumbers, squash, lettuce patch or any other planting that is low to the ground. I ALWAYS take a stick and move things around before I reach into anything. truth told he was even more concealed than you see in these pictures - I killed him first and then took these. that last small patch of his tail in the left third of the first picture and a very small portion of his back directly behind the head was all that I saw. his head was completely covered by the dried clippings which are a pretty close match for his coloring.
