ALERT Phone trouble

Are any of you having trouble with your phones today? As of this message, both my wife and I can't use our phones. They are different model phones and yes - before you ask - the bills are paid and there should be no reason for these malfunctions.

We can't make local or long distance calls and, apparently because we can't check, it seems that no one can call us. By this time this morning we should've both received several calls. Sometimes I've received a prompt that I'm "out of the service area" which is impossible because I'm at home sitting at my desk, but more often I'm getting nothing.

Hopefully this is just a local problem (we're in southern Mississippi), but I wanted to put this out there and see if anyone else is being affected.

Have you tried texting, Doc?

Does that work?

Texting is working normally in Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa and Oklahoma. Haven't made any phone calls. Mostly Verizon.

I imagine the 'out of service area' message might happen if your carrier has a cell tower (or possibly a base station) down.

Only inbound call on my cell thus far today was a RoboDialler.

My wife has had in and out-bound calls, text, & PM inbound on her work phone, a different carrier. Nothing yet on her private phone but last week I sort of roasted a few people in that directory about being disrespectful of her time during working hours.

Most of them got it and apologised but a few, OK maybe quite a few, appear to be miffed.

I read somewhere that there may be cell phone issues due to the eclipse if you are anywhere near that. It's because so many people from other places are traveling to the path of totality and crowded into a small area that it may overwhelm the system. Not sure where you are so it may be irrelevant.

I think it's important for us to post local infrastructure outages, especially as there seems to be more and more of them lately.

This morning we had no phones, but we still had the internet. Had we lost both, we'd have been very isolated except for broadcast media. One of these days we're probably going to see nationwide outages of different types.

We live in a rural dead zone so it's usually text only for us and sometimes even they don't go thru. The closest cell tower is 3 miles away. We can drive into the nearest small town and get service to make a call. Today we drove 30 minutes away to the city for the path of totality and we actually had 4G service lol we never get that at home
