Palin’s Kind of Patriotism

Criticizing Sarah Palin is truly shooting fish in a barrel. But given the huge attention she is getting, you can’t just ignore what she has to say. And there was one thing she said in the debate with Joe Biden that really sticks in my craw. It was when she turned to Biden and declared: “You said recently that higher taxes or asking for higher taxes or paying higher taxes is patriotic. In the middle class of America, which is where Todd and I have been all of our lives, that’s not patriotic.”

What an awful statement. Palin defended the government’s $700 billion rescue plan. She defended the surge in Iraq, where her own son is now serving. She defended sending more troops to Afghanistan. And yet, at the same time, she declared that Americans who pay their fair share of taxes to support all those government-led endeavors should not be considered patriotic.

I only wish she had been asked: “Governor Palin, if paying taxes is not considered patriotic in your neighborhood, who is going to pay for the body armor that will protect your son in Iraq? Who is going to pay for the bailout you endorsed? If it isn’t from tax revenues, there are only two ways to pay for those big projects — printing more money or borrowing more money. Do you think borrowing money from China is more patriotic than raising it in taxes from Americans?” That is not putting America first. That is selling America first.

Sorry, I grew up in a very middle-class family in a very middle-class suburb of Minneapolis, and my parents taught me that paying taxes, while certainly no fun, was how we paid for the police and the Army, our public universities and local schools, scientific research and Medicare for the elderly. No one said it better than Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes: “I like paying taxes. With them I buy civilization.”

I can understand someone saying that the government has no business bailing out the financial system, but I can’t understand someone arguing that we should do that but not pay for it with taxes. I can understand someone saying we have no business in Iraq, but I can’t understand someone who advocates staying in Iraq until “victory” declaring that paying taxes to fund that is not patriotic.

How in the world can conservative commentators write with a straight face that this woman should be vice president of the United States? Do these people understand what serious trouble our country is in right now?

We are in the middle of an economic perfect storm, and we don’t know how much worse it’s going to get. People all over the world are hoarding cash, and no bank feels that it can fully trust anyone it is doing business with anywhere in the world. Did you notice that the government of Iceland just seized the country’s second-largest bank and today is begging Russia for a $5 billion loan to stave off “national bankruptcy.” What does that say? It tells you that financial globalization has gone so much farther and faster than regulatory institutions could govern it. Our crisis could bankrupt Iceland! Who knew?

And we have not yet even felt the full economic brunt here. I fear we may be at that moment just before the tsunami hits — when the birds take flight and the insects stop chirping because their acute senses can feel what is coming before humans can. At this moment, only good governance can save us. I am not sure that this crisis will end without every government in every major economy guaranteeing the creditworthiness of every financial institution it regulates. That may be the only way to get lending going again. Organizing something that big and complex will take some really smart governance and seasoned leadership.

Whether or not I agree with John McCain, he is of presidential timber. But putting the country in the position where a total novice like Sarah Palin could be asked to steer us through possibly the most serious economic crisis of our lives is flat out reckless. It is the opposite of conservative.

And please don’t tell me she will hire smart advisers. What happens when her two smartest advisers disagree?

And please also don’t tell me she is an “energy expert.” She is an energy expert exactly the same way the king of Saudi Arabia is an energy expert — by accident of residence. Palin happens to be governor of the Saudi Arabia of America — Alaska — and the only energy expertise she has is the same as the king of Saudi Arabia’s. It’s about how the windfall profits from the oil in their respective kingdoms should be divided between the oil companies and the people.

At least the king of Saudi Arabia, in advocating “drill baby drill,” is serving his country’s interests — by prolonging America’s dependence on oil. My problem with Palin is that she is also serving his country’s interests — by prolonging America’s dependence on oil. That’s not patriotic. Patriotic is offering a plan to build our economy — not by tax cuts or punching more holes in the ground, but by empowering more Americans to work in productive and innovative jobs. If Palin has that kind of a plan, I haven’t heard it.

The quote is correct - there is a youtube of the debate.

Certainly the quote is correct and I personally witnessed her making the comment. BUT his interpretation of what she said is incorrect. He is accusing her of saying paying taxes period is not patriotic and in fact goes on and on about it. When if fact she said paying HIGHER taxes wasn't "patriotic". Get it??

You have GOT to be kidding. Critisizing Palin is the only way Obama / Biden can keep the attention off of all of their insane issues.

If anyone can look at all this and still think there is no problem with Obama, then I don't know what will convince them.

The American electorate deserves answers on the relationship between Barack Obama and his supposed Kenyan cousin, Raila Odinga.

These links will provide you with a general overview of the deeply troubling actions of Barack Obama as he unsuccesfully set out to help get his purported cousin Raila Odinga -- a man the Kenyan government called a "genocidist" -- elected as the President of Kenya:

Letter from Africa

In a letter received from American missionaries who have spent the last twelve years living and serving in Africa, the Agent of Change comes into focus.

The letter opens with “Thanks for sending out an alert about Obama. We are living and working in Kenya for almost twelve years now and know his family (tribe) well. They are the ones who were behind the recent [2007] Presidential election chaos here. Thousands of people have been displaced by election violence (over 350,000) and I don’t know the last count of the dead.”

The letter goes on, “Obama, under “friends of Obama” gave almost a million dollars to the opposition campaign who just happened to be his cousin, Raila Odinga, who is a socialist trained in East Germany. He has been trying to bring Kenya down for years and the last president threw him in prison for trying to subvert this country!”

Then the missionaries make their biggest statement, “What we would like you to know is what the American press has been keeping a dirty little secret. Obama IS a Muslim and he is a racist and this is a fulfillment of the 911 threat that was just the beginning. Jihad is the only true Muslim way.” This message comes from American missionaries who have been working among Muslim groups for the last twenty years, the last twelve among Obama’s tribe (family) in Kenya.

The assertions made by this missionary group are astounding. But the assertions raise questions which are even more astounding.

The letter further states, “He is not an American as we know it. Please encourage your friends and associates not to be taken in by those that are promoting him. It is world wide jihad. - By the way, his true full name in Kenya is Barrack Hussein Muhammad Obama.”

Obama Is Not the Only Agent of Change Candidate

Obama’s cousin Raila Odinga also ran as the agent of change candidate in Kenya 2007, as you can see on his campaign web site. As an East German trained socialist, and son of a well-known socialist father, Raila Odinga pursues heavy handed socialism in Africa. But like his comrade cousin in America, he uses the acceptable guise of Democratic Socialism in that pursuit.

Numerous historical accounts exist and a summation of those reports appears at Wikipedia.

Raila was charged with treason and was detained without trial for six years.[2]

A biography released in July 2006 suggested that Raila was more involved in the coup than previously thought. After its publication, some MPs called for Raila to be arrested and charged,[3] but the statute of limitations had already passed and, since the information was contained in a biography, Raila could not be said to have openly confessed his involvement.[4]

Released on February 6th, 1988, he was rearrested in September, 1988 for his involvement with the Kenya Revolutionary Movement (KRM),[5] an underground organization pressing for multi-party democracy in Kenya, which was then a one-party state.

Raila was released on June 12th, 1989, only to be incarcerated again on July 5th, 1990, together with Kenneth Matiba, and former Nairobi Mayor Charles Rubia.[6] Raila was released on June 21st, 1991, and in October, he fled the country to Norway alleging government attempts to assassinate him.[7]

Today, Odinga is co-president of Kenya.

Emily/HC, the crap you listed has been debunked repeatedly (although I'm sure it will make no difference to you). Don't assume that everything is true because you read it on the internet.

Fortunately Sarah Palin is not running for president. She's a trophy wife to the ticket, no more, no less.

If you are calling the fact that Obama just says "No that's not true"
And all of you people who are hypnotized by his 'dazzle' is debunking something then I guess in your world that would be true.

But for the rest of us who actually look at facts he has not debunked any of it and the truth is surfacing and he cannot keep a lid on it anymore.

Look at the CNN story (usually CNN is lifting up their messiah so the fact that they published this researched documentary speaks volumes to its truth)

Watch the youtube videos - they are of your MESSIAH himself.

How does he say that he was lying about what he is saying isn't true when it is HIM saying it? If you are seriously going to tell me that he is debunking his OWN words?

Seriously, watch them. If you want to retain a modicum of validity in your statements then you should at least watch the facts and speak to those instead of the Obama mantra.....'don't pay any attention to the man behind the curtain. I am the great and wonderful oz'

Thanks, Fruit Loop, I think you summarized it nicely.

I was starting to respond with: http://thinkonthesethings.wordpress...egiance-youve-been-played-for-a-daggone-fool/

There is substantial counter-evidence but there are people who whom evidence is valueless and an case it's pretty difficult to prove a negative (and there is no limit to the number of false negatives these people come up with. I'm referring to the faith-based community and I'm not talking about faith in God here.

I noticed that in the last debate it was Obama who was wearing the flag pin and McCain who was not. Should we give credit to Obama for making McCain comfortable with not wearing the flag pin constantly (or having the flag on his campaign plane). or credit McCain with making Obama feel that he should wear one for this debate?

You guys crack me up, youtube is suspect when it shows Obama talking in his own words?

CNN is suspect now after being in the tank for Obama like lovesick schoolchildren?

How about Google then. They have been complicit in covering up all kinds of negative information as well as shutting down sites critical of the Messiah.

BUT....

Google rolled back the clock to their oldest available index today to celebrate their tenth anniversary, and guess what I found?

In the New Party's March 1996 Update.
http://web.archive.org/web/20010306020133/www.newparty.org/up9603.html

Winning in Wisconsin

The New Party continues to roll through Wisconsin, with victories this month in municipal and county primaries in Milwaukee and Madison. Progressive Milwaukee is backing three county board, one city council, and one school board candidate. Progressive Dane (Madison) is endorsing nine county board candidates. All NP-backed candidates won their primaries.

Chicago Campaigns

The Illinois New Party is working intensively on Willie Delgado's state representative campaign. Delgado is part of an emerging Latino network in Chicago. We're also backing Danny Davis in a Congressional race, Barack Obama for state representative, and judicial candidate Patricia Martin. In addition to the electoral work, the NP in Chicago is supporting a local living wage campaign and an effort to prevent the placement of a waste site on the West Side.

And then there is the October 1996 New Party Update:
http://web.archive.org/web/20010306031216/www.newparty.org/up9610.html

New Party members are busy knocking on doors, hammering down lawn signs, and phoning voters to support NP candidates this fall. Here are some of our key races:

Arkansas: The Little Rock New Party has a full slate of candidates up for election in November. LRNP steering committee member Michael Booker is running unopposed for re-election to the Arkansas State House. Two NP members - Paul Kelly and Genevieve Stewart - are running for at-large (city-wide) city council positions. And in a head-to-head battle between the New Party and the conservative right, NP member Jayne Cia faces the Arkansas state chair of Empower America (Jack Kemp and Bill Bennett's organization) for a Justice of the Peace (county board) position.

Illinois: Three NP-members won Democratic primaries last Spring and face off against Republican opponents on election day: Danny Davis (U.S. House), Barack Obama (State Senate) and Patricia Martin (Cook County Judiciary).

In the Populist:
http://www.populist.com/11.96.Edit.html

New Party members and supported candidates won 16 of 23 races, including an at-large race for the Little Rock, Ark., City Council, a seat on the county board for Little Rock and the school board for Prince George's County, Md. Chicago is sending the first New Party member to Congress, as Danny Davis, who ran as a Democrat, won an overwhelming 85% victory. New Party member Barack Obama was uncontested for a State Senate seat from Chicago.

And from The Columbus Free Press, the reprinting of a New Party press release:
http://www.freepress.org/Backup/UnixBackup/pubhtml/newparty/newpart5.html

Illinois: The first NP member heads to Congress, as Danny Davis wins an overwhelming 85% victory yesterday (he got a higher percentage of the vote in that district than the President). NP member and State Senate candidate Barack Obama won uncontested. Interestingly, it appears that the local Democratic machine is trying to distance itself from our folks. At a "Democratic Unity" march on Chicago's West Side, a flyer invited community members to join with a host of local democratic candidates. The only two west-side Democrats not listed: NP members Danny Davis (U.S. House candidate) and Michael Chandler (Alderman and Ward Committeeman).

It is now well documented that Obama ran for office and won uncontested as a New Party candidate, but what is the New Party?

In 1996, for all intents and purposes, "ACORN and the New Party were essentially the same body."
http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=26913

That would be the same ACORN that Barack Obama has close ties to today, the same ACORN that Barack Obama funneled $800,000 to this year, and which is under investigation in at least a dozen states for voter registration fraud.
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/news/election/s_584284.html

Is it too much to ask of FL's "real" journalists to ask the campaign why Barack Obama ran as the candidate to the left of even the most radical left-wing of the Democratic Party, then lied about it and has since tried to downplay that radical association? Or why he lies about any association with the New Party or ACORN?
Or...why he laughs at McCain being so poor with the internet, yet can't remember that NOTHING IS EVER LOST on it completely?

Thank you for the clarification. It amazes me that whatever comes out of Obama's mouth about McCain is believed 100%

But what comes out of Obama's mouth shooting himself in the foot is a verbal photo shop?

Every time I try to grasp how naive and gullable a liberal is I find out that I have the bar too high. How do they survive?
