WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (Gray News) - A 13-year-old girl is accused of killing her mom after having her phone taken away on Friday, according to Pennsylvania authorities.

Wilkes-Barre Police responded to the scene around 12:30 p.m., due to reports of an unresponsive woman.

When officers arrived, they found a 44-year-old victim with multiple stab wounds to her neck, back and blood coming from her head, WYOU reported.

Officers said when they first made contact with Lataya Powell she said she was sorry she killed her mother.

“I killed my mom, and she’ll never forgive me if she is alive,” Powell reportedly told police.

Authorities said she stabbed her mother during an argument and threw the weapon on the neighbor’s doorstep.

“I don’t have my phone because my mom took it before our fight,” she said.

While being taken into custody, she told WYOU that she felt “regret, guilt and self-disgust.”

Police also found an 11-year-old boy with stab wounds to the back, but they appeared to be non-life threatening.

Powell has been charged with homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence.

She is being charged as an adult.

Can't tell if those are dreads or not. I think those are those hair extensions where they do fat braids all over the head but if you don't take care of them correctly they get nappy. Doesn't matter either way, in her case it shows a lack of self-care which should have been a real wake up call for what was going on inside her head.

@greysage

That happens to a lot of black kids that are overfed a crappy, sugar-filled diet when they are little. As soon as those girls get within a whiff of puberty they get huge all over.

You are correct those are the fat "twists" hair extensions, looking rather nappy. Lazy folks dreads.

With the way that "they" are catering to kids and putting the blame on parents, I would not be surprised if "they" defended this girl and said it was wrong of the mother to take away her phone.

As upside down as everything seems to have gotten, is it any wonder that people don't want to get married or have children?? Especially white people, who usually get stuck with the blame for everything and anything. (And this comment probably puts me on the "watch list" if I'm not on it already.)

The local TV news reported that all the drawers with knives and forks in the family's home were padlocked, and the Department of Children and Youth already knew the address when the "alleged" homicide report came in, so you know something was brewing there for a while.

'I'm the reason my mom is dead,' 13-year-old Wilkes-Barre girl accused of stabbing mother to death

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A 13-year-old girl in Luzerne County admitted to Wilkes-Barre police she stabbed her mother to death Friday, according to a criminal complaint.

"I killed my mom," Lataya Powell told an officer while they stood on her South Sherman Street porch. "She'll never forgive me if she is alive."

Officers rushed to South Sherman Street shortly after noon because a teenage girl, later identified as Powell, told a 911 call taker that her mother, Temeeka Tucker, was dead and it was Powell's fault.

Luzerne County Chief Public Defender Joseph Yeager, who was later appointed to represent Powell, told officers she would not agree to an interview.

In a statement released Saturday, county officials say they do not believe Powell has other immediate local family.

Powell is jailed at the Luzerne County Correctional facility without bail. President Judge Michael T. Vough denied her bail during her arraignment because she is charged with criminal homicide, among other counts, records show.

Tucker, 44, was stabbed several times in her chest and back and was soon pronounced dead by Luzerne County Coroner Jill Matthews. An 11-year-old boy in the home also suffered stab-wounds but he is expected to survive.

Powell told investigators she stabbed her mother during an argument and a neighbor reported to police he heard screaming in the apartment before the police arrived.

Home security camera footage confirmed Powell's story she threw the knife used to stab her mother toward the porch of a neighboring home, investigators said. It was unclear from the court paperwork if the police found the blade.

Investigators noted that kitchen drawers and cabinets were padlocked. One drawer used to store cutlery had been broken into. The padlock used to secure the drawer was found on the ground.

Police also noted that blood stained Powell's hands. Locked in the back of a police car, she kicked at the cage and yelled: "I'm the reason my mom is dead," according to the complaint.

"I deserve to be in jail," she said, according to police.

Those who live on South Sherman Street told Newswatch 16 the family was new to the neighborhood.

Newswatch 16 saw the police spend hours searching the property and speaking with neighbors.

Other than homicide, Powell is charged with aggravated assault for allegedly harming an 11-year-old boy and evidence tampering for purportedly tossing the knife used in the assault.

A preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled April 10 in Luzerne County Central Court.
