EBOLA Our hospital just opened up a 'command center' for ebola.....

Yet they say it's not here. But they've gone so far as to open an actual command center for it. We're actually a large system so it's not just one hospital.

Also saying our EHR system (I'm on this team, the IT side of it, not clinical) will alert med staff if a number of criteria are met. Guess they don't want to blame another missed case on software. Of course the alerts are new and knowing, as I do, our EHR provider I'm betting that it'll be buggy WHEN it goes live.

We're a looonngggg way from Dallas. Good that we're being proactive? Probably.

Makes me wonder if I'm sent to a facility once it's in our neck of the woods if I can decline without losing my job. I don't go to the clinic's often but you never know with these computer thingys what one will have to do.

I know this is ANOTHER e-what? thread but we're not near it, don't have a case near us, etc but I found it near alarming that we took resources to support a command center already. Being in the healthcare field a bit, I've been watching this to say the least.

........glad I got my Amazon order LAST WEEK for this crap.....

Carry on.

Any idea where the funds are coming from to support this?
(are they asking for "free overtime" from workers?)

Will there be a reduction in other duties to people working in the command center?

No real good reason for hospitals to do this unless there is a real true concern. Costs money and disrupts normal business

Without saying too much......easily over 700 miles North of DFW.

I wonder if the hospital got a federal grant to set this up? This is going to take loads of money to get hospitals on board. The taxpayer will be footing the bill for all of this - including cremations.

That is probably what they should be doing. Doesn't necessarily mean that something is ready to pop in the area. Being the sort of pathogen that it is you really can't afford to wait for it to come to you while your twiddling your thumbs.

My thouhgt as well. What good would it do to have a case pop up and then take hours or days to set up a safe area to treat people.

Prepare for the worst; hope for the best.

Which is true. But as a rule hospitals HATE to spend any more money than absolutely necessary.

Re funding; who knows. Its amazing what we have $$$$'s for and what we don't.

I'm glad they're thinking about it. Don't want to be caught behind with this stuff.

I remember when there was a swine flu outbreak in the UK, there was a notice put up in all NHS hospitals to the effect that if you have symptoms of swine flu do not come near the hospital or visit your Dr, you had to register to get some drug from your Chemist (Drug Store) and stay at home

same should apply to EBOLA

UH errr Case had some talking head (not the guy I know, some Infectious dosease guru)on and he was pretty clear they had drilled the whole thing and were ready.
Knowing how that joint operates I tend to believe him. When ATX was all the rage (in 01) we were the only hosp in the city with a FULLY contained decon system. So we got all the funny powder people AND firefighters.

If this guy said Case is ready, it's liikely ready to go to BSL4+ protocols (telling the CDC to stuff it, even though they may have written half the protocols FOR the CDC).

There is a well worn path from UH to NIH and back. Know a few docs who have trod that path personally...

======================

Heck, when we rebuilt the main building, we built in (and mothballed)m a Level 1 trauma facility. 3 years ago they brought it on line, 10 years after putting the basics in place.
Neither UH nor the Clinic (Cleveland Clinic) screw aroiund because there is MetroGeneral competing with them for the best in ________________ program in the city (which USUALLY means best in the country or world,,,,heh)
