[OT] This is really weird...

I was doing some grocery shopping yesterday. Thee was a display from Campbells' Soups suggesting the use of their condensed soups as a base for cooking. You know, the broths & 'cream of whatever' soups. They were going cheap, so I walked over to see if there were any I could use.

The cans of chicken broth were labelled primarily in CHINESE. I don't recall exactly, but it seems to me that most writing & the largest writing was in Chinese. I was wondering, kip, kanuck & jesse, next time you're in a grocery store, could you check this out? I happened to be in LOblaws.

Anyone else in Canada too of course & has anyone seen this is the States? I couldn't tell where the cans had been manhufactured or filled from the label... pretty unclear.

I found this unusual & wondered if anyone can clue me in here...

Thanx

Been thinking more... why did I assume it was Chinese? Could be Japanese. Next time I'm in, I'll ask. Secondly, this is Kingston ONtario which has a really small visible minority population, although Asian immigrants are moving here. The country took in 5k Chinese last year as immigrants. Not sure how many we take from Japan. But I wouldn't have thought we had enough who use that language to justify relabelling.

Sue:

We have two cans of Campbells soup in the house as our daughter likes to put it on pasta. These were bought only a few days ago and they are just in the usual English and French.

Of course, we don't get "new" things up here as quickly as people who live in the cities do, so I don't know what's going on in Vancouver. I'll give a friend a call there later today, and find out what the deal is in Van.

My sons live in the Niagara Peninsula, not too far from you but on the other side of Toronto. I'll get my som who lives in Hamilton to have a look see the next time he's out shopping.

God bless, - Jesse.

A company the size of Campbell's makes food products to be sold all over the world. As such they print labels in many different languages. I wouldn't be surprised if that particular lot of soup was sent to your area by mistake. Or it may be that the company feels there's a large enough Asian community there now to take a flyer on that sort of labeling to see if it'll sell.

Somewhere at the house I have a graphic of a can of Spam with all the text in Italian and another of Spam with the text all in Arabic and the contents made of beef!
