China claims success in advanced cloning
BEIJING - China has already developed 47 transgenic plant species, cloned goats and transplanted genes into pigs, rabbits, sheep and cows, according to an official report released yesterday.
The report, released by the Ministry of Science and Technology at a press conference in Beijing, claimed that the number of transgenic plant species on which China had been working had reached 47 and involved 103 kinds of genes.

The report said that the country had been successful in cloning goats.
'The rate of success is 10 to 20 times more than the sheep, Dolly,' the report said.
China has also bred pigs, rabbits and sheep for growth-hormone transfer.
According to the report, the rate at which genes from an external source were introduced into the animals was 2.1 per cent.
This is the same rate as in experiments carried out by cutting-edge scientists.
'China has obtained remarkable achievement in animal cloning and transgenic animals,' said the report, titled Present Status Of The Chinese High-Tech Agriculture And Its Goal During The 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-2005).
It said that through efforts over the past decade, China had achieved remarkable progress in pest and disease resistance.
It also claimed success in quality improvement and herbicide resistance in the genetic engineering of plants.
In addition, it said that the country had attained the most advanced level of research work in the field of improving crops with radiation and the application of nucleon-tracing techniques to agricultural chemicals.
Among the mutated breeds which have been cultivated, 10 have won national invention awards.
