#SpringLake | #Michigan

Currently At this time Emergency officials are urgently directing all residents in Spring Lake Township, Michigan, to evacuate within a half-mile radius due to a high potential for a large and massive explosion. These disasters aren't anything new. The same thing happened to us back in the 1980's. The Larry Fricker fire, Anaheim CA
He was just across the street from our warehouse. A fertilizer and hazardous waste business. I can't remember many details but I think it was over 10,000 people evacuated.

Twenty five miles or so from Holland where I grew up. Back then there were actually separate small towns along the lakeshore and now it is like one big town from Holland to Muskegon with Grand Haven in the middle.

I think, because of the events swirling around us, we are all on edge for any bad thing happening and when it hits close to home it is even more unsettling. Makes you stop and think what would I do if the cops came to the door and said evacuate. That has never happened to me and now in my current old and painful state, that would be a very difficult event to deal with. My heart goes out to people who are scared out of their homes because of dangerous events and even more so when the event touches their lives and they go back to no home left to pick up the pieces.

What's the flammable/explosive ability of an aluminum plant?
If the plant dealt with molten aluminum, water introduced into the vat would create a very intense explosion, first based off of the steam reaction, then the temperature separation of the oxygen / hydrogen molecules in the water and subsequent ignition, then the ignition of the finely dispersed aluminum from the original blast. There is video floating around of the exact same situation that took place around 30 years ago at an Alcoa plant in Australia.

Another hazard is Aluminum dross, the “pond scum” that floats on the surface of molten aluminum during it’s melting process. When expised to water, the dross breaks down and may ignite, also releasing ammonia vapors.

Chlorine gas is used in the refining of melting aluminum to release impurities from the different ionic bonds to the metal. Facilities would have the chlorine in either 100 lb cylinders or one-ton vessels. An emergency threatening either of these containers would prompt an evacuation.

Just a few things off the top of my head generic to almost all aluminum plants. I spent two years on the emergency response team at an Alcoa plant.
