WTF?!? Oakland wants to turn a cruise ship into housing for the homeless

This could turn into a huge disaster. I can see it now … Norovirus, shigella, etc. hitting this "emergency housing." Also, the plumbing on a cruise ship is not what I would call the best to hold up under the pressure they plan to put it through. There isn't enough ventilation in the corridors when you are berthed … it starts to smell a bit. This could be a nightmare.

I just can't believe this actually fell out of someone's mouth. There is no way this would even come close to working. The wear and tear on the ship's infrastructure alone would make this a complete failure in less than a month. And I can hear the whacko Cali eco-freaks now about the amount of fuel the ship was using to keep stabilized and keep the power systems up and running 24/7/365. On most port days the ship goes into a power-saving mode and the AC, etc are powered way down. Most of the interior and several exterior cabins do not have outside ventilation. Only balconies and suites with balconies have the ability to have a window (or slider) open.

The only way this works is if you force everyone off the ship during the day and only allow them on at dusk and even then it isn't realistic. It would be interesting to see them force everyone through security getting on the ship like real cruise passengers have to. It is like going through the airport at least once or twice a day.

I'd laugh my azz off if it raised anchor and dropped all the human flotsam in Hawaii - let's see what those liberal judges could do about that ....

Not to mention the cost of the ship. I'm guessing the original idiot was planning on using an existing ship, but with these kind of costs -

How much does it cost to build a cruise ship?

Ships get even more expensive as they get bigger. A ship with space for 2,000 to 3,000 passengers costs an average of $555 million. If the cruise ship wants to accommodate 3,000 to 4,000 passengers, it’s looking at a cost of about $734 million. A ship with a capacity of 4,000 to 5,000 passengers will cost the cruise line $937 million.

… the rental to use one would be horrendous, not to mention the damage deposit charged for even 2,000 homeless

Never know but there could be a bigger reason to load a cruise ship with homeless and not really be honest about it, renaming the ship SS Typhus could be a reason to get them out of the city (Quarantine?).

Considering land and construction costs in the Bay Area, $6M sounds like a steal....until you look at the day to day costs.

It doesn't have to operate as a cruise ship, just dorms.

Rooms could be gutted to slightly better than prison quality. Easy to clean with a pressure washer, nothing much to burn.

Pump out the waste to sanitary sewer, hook it up to shore power.

I'm not sure of building costs there, but I doubt you could build a 500 room hotel for $6mil.

The closest berth to Oakland with those kinds of support would be old NAS Alameda and even there considering how long it's been dormant I don't think it is "plug and play" these days....

well, a cruise ship is pretty much self contained. its like a manufacturing plant. think of the possibilities.
you could convert it into something that produces a useful product.
I know. it could be converted into a human composting plant.
produce fertilizer

Pride comes before the fall.....Pride month ended.
Imagine the crime, the gangs that would develop. I think it's a bad idea across the board. Not sure if there is a solution anymore, given the growth of homelessness across the world.....as they usher in millions more not capable of supporting themselves. It's only going to get worse.
