There were so many threads wasn't sure where to post - paper says this is breaking news so doing it separately, I suggest we may want a daily or weekly NK or War threats thread; mods feel free to move this in a couple of hours- Melodi

NORTH Korean state media on Tuesday warned of a nuclear attack on the United States at any sign of a U.S. pre-emptive strike as a U.S. Navy strike group led by a nuclear-powered aircraft steamed towards the western Pacific.

Tension has escalated sharply on the Korean peninsula with talk of military action by the United States gaining traction following its strikes last week against Syria and amid concerns the reclusive North may soon conduct a sixth nuclear test.

North Korea's official Rodong Sinmun newspaper said the country was prepared to respond to any aggression by the United States.

"Our revolutionary strong army is keenly watching every move by enemy elements with our nuclear sight focused on the U.S. invasionary bases not only in South Korea and the Pacific operation theatre but also in the U.S. mainland," it said.

South Korean acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn warned of "greater provocations" by North Korea and ordered the military to intensify monitoring and to ensure close communication with the United States.

"It is possible the North may wage greater provocations such as a nuclear test timed with various anniversaries including the Supreme People's Assembly," said Hwang, acting leader since former president Park Geun-hye was removed amid a graft scandal.

The North convened a Supreme People's Assembly session on Tuesday, one of its twice-yearly sessions in which major appointments are announced and national policy goals are formally approved.

But South Korean officials took pains to quell talk in social media of an impending security crisis or outbreak of war.

"We'd like to ask precaution so as not to get blinded by exaggerated assessment about the security situation on the Korean peninsula," Defence Ministry spokesman Moon Sang-kyun said.

Saturday is the 105th anniversary of the birth of Kim Il Sung, the country's founding father and grandfather of current ruler, Kim Jong Un.

A military parade is expected in the North's capital, Pyongyang, to mark the day. North Korea often also marks important anniversaries with tests of its nuclear or missile capabilities in breach of U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Little Fat Boy better be ready to lose a few sub bases if he's stupid enough to send out any boats to make runs at the fleet - the US isn't going to be satisfied nailing a couple of small fry ....

What is the US expecting to gain from this?

It's like provoking a rabid dog to show how powerful you are.
A completely crazy person has nothing to loose.

The only reason to do this is to intentionally start a war, and blame it on NK.
Yeah, we're just so 'effin bad ass.

How long should we wait to deal with this problem?

Start negotiations from a inflated position then come back to a reasonable solution.

Trump is establishing a posture that hasn't been seen from a POTUS for years.

A little brinksmanship to set the playing board.

We are going to take out this crazy person who continues to fire missiles at nations with the possibility of nukes on one of them. Better now than later. So sorry for bad news but it is what it is.

That works when your opponent or rival is SANE; I am not totally sure that Little Kimmie is playing with all his marbles; while it is a vastly different culture and a naturally paranoid system, his killing off of nearly all his relatives suggests that he either has or is coming down with "Dictator Syndrome" which is a real medical things based on the scans and research done on the brains of former strong men.

It seems that even people who start out moderately sane, if put in positions of absolute power; especially if they have no one left to tell them when they are full of it that they trust (from an advisor to a wife) their brains start to shrink the areas that are used for making reasoned and rational choices.

The real name for this is malignant narcissist (among others) but Nightwolf said they study it now in medical school and it is very interesting to look at especially if you are a history geek (who may have had it and who didn't) etc.

But it isn't nearly as much fun to "watch in action" as we may be doing here; again not all absolute rulers get this but there is a tendency to do so and one mark of it is eliminating anyone that might have told them they were "full of it." Basically they are then left surrounded by yes men who will tell them whatever they think His Mightiness wants to hear, which I think is likely in this case.

well put. It simply can't be put off any longer. They WILL BE able to hit the US mainland with a nuke in the near future, if not dealt with.

MOST of our rivals/ opponents are sane, and I'm guessing this show is for them. The one's that arent sane, and yearn for a blaze of glory, shall soon have at least the first part.

I wish there wasn't so much fanfair, they should have hit him from orbit. and pretended not to know where it came from.

This could be a situation where whoever gets the first shot off wins.

Nah. Whoever let's the first one go is the stinker.

Clint Eastwood lines as the Dirty Harry

"Go ahead Li'L Kim, I know in the crescendo of all this excitement you may have miscounted if I fired 59 or 70 Tomahawk missiles. Since this is a Super Power, a nation who had already superceeded your current capabilities years before you found your belly-button on the 38th Parallel, you have to ask yourself something... Are you feeling lucky punk."

Those look like good reasons to strike! What do you do with a rabid dog? You shoot it before it infects other animals, or bites a person. What do we do with crazy people? We protect them from hurting others and themselves. Logical.

Or...we just continue to wait until he does hurt people?? Then go in?? That's proactive.
