New York: Founder and CEO of Muslim TV channel beheads wife

Founded TV network to combat negative perceptions of Muslims

Bridges TV founder and Chief Executive Muzzammil Hassan founded the TV network in 2004. According to a Reuters story at that time, "his wife came up with the idea in December 2001 while listening to the radio on a road trip.":

"Some derogatory comments were being made about Muslims that offended her," Hassan told Reuters ahead of Tuesday's launch. "She was seven months pregnant, and she thought she didn't want her kids growing up in this environment."
So he founded Bridges TV to combat negative perceptions of Muslims.

But now that he has beheaded his wife, I'm afraid this prominent moderate Muslim will only be feeding those negative perceptions.

"Prominent Orchard Park man charged with beheading his wife," by Gene Warner for the Buffalo News, February 13 (thanks to Jon):

Orchard Park police are investigating a particularly gruesome killing, the beheading of a woman, after her husband -- an influential member of the local Muslim community -- reported her death to police Thursday.
Police identified the victim as Aasiya Z. Hassan, 37. Detectives have charged her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, 44, with second-degree murder.

"He came to the police station at 6:20 p.m. [Thursday] and told us that she was dead," Orchard Park Police Chief Andrew Benz said late this morning.

Muzzammil Hassan told police that his wife was at his business, Bridges TV, on Thorn Avenue in the village. Officers went to that location and discovered her body.

Muzzammil Hassan is the founder and chief executive officer of Bridges TV, which he launched in 2004, amid hopes that it would help portray Muslims in a more positive light.

The killing apparently occurred some time late Thursday afternoon. Detectives still are looking for the murder weapon.

"Obviously, this is the worst form of domestic violence possible," Erie County District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III said today.

Uh, yeah.

Authorities say Aasiya Hassan recently had filed for divorce from her husband.
"She had an order of protection that had him out of the home as of Friday the 6th [of February]," Benz said....

I am old enough to remember when such crimes were described in these terms:
"He loved her too much to let her go..."

Ya. "Love"

(tho the perp, being non-arabic, generally sought to off themselves into the bargain)

From whence I hail,
an 'Order of Protection' has ever been an invitation to "suicide" by the (proto-)ex-.

Yeah right in my backyard (7 miles away).

Looks like the Lackawana Six wasn't the only terrorist in this neck of woods.

This kind of got buried in todays news with the airplane crash happening.

I remember walking into Queen City Cigarettes and Candy Co. (Buffalo, New York ~ Orchard Park is a suburb) a week before it was raided. I was sent in to repair their copy machine.

As I entered Chanting was being loudly piped over the radio, and prayer rugs where placed between the ailes. When I came up to the counter to introduce myself, they stoped chanting and surrounded me. After realizing I was the copy repairman, they changed the station and put on a pro 9-11 program.

The copier was jammed up from making several duplicates of 9-11 newspaper clipings, so bad, that they fused paper into the exit tray and toner was dumped all over the place.

Fearing for my safety I told them they needed parts to correctly repair the copier. The owner, Mohamed Albanna, told me to fix it the best I could without having to return. I did, they paided me in cash, and wanted to know if I wanted to take any candy home with me. I politely declined and got the HEL out of there!

The following week "Mohamed Albanna, a leader in the area’s Yemeni community and an uncle of a man still being hunted by U.S. authorities, was seized by Customs and Drug Enforcement Administration agents in the doorway of his Buffalo store, the Queen City Cigarettes and Candy Co.

His younger brother, 29-year-old Ali Albanna, and a 52-year-old cousin, Ali Taher Elbaneh, also were arrested.

All three were indicted by a federal grand jury on a charge that they sent more than $480,000 to Yemen (which was fronted to AQ) without a license to operate a money-transferring business, which is required by state law."

My point, that this beheading is just another link in terror cells within my area.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The founder of an Islamic television station in upstate New York aimed at countering Muslim stereotypes has confessed to beheading his wife, authorities said.

Muzzammil Hassan was charged with second-degree murder after police found the decapitated body of his wife, Aasiya Hassan, at the Bridges TV station in the Buffalo suburb of Orchard Park, said Andrew Benz, Orchard Park's police chief.

Hassan was arrested Thursday.

His wife filed for divorce January 6, and police had responded to several domestic violence calls at the couple's home, Benz said.

Hassan went directly to the police station after his wife's death and confessed to killing her, Benz told CNN. Benz declined to give further details.

Attempts to reach an attorney for Hassan were unsuccessful, and his family didn't return calls from CNN.

He had two children, 4 and 6, with his wife. He had two other children, 17 and 18, from his previous marriage.

He launched Bridges TV, billed as the first English-language cable channel targeting Muslims inside the United States, in 2004. At the time, Hassan said he hoped the network would balance negative portrayals of Muslims following the attacks of September 11, 2001.

The station's staff is "deeply shocked and saddened by the murder of Aasiya Hassan and the subsequent arrest of Muzzammil Hassan," a statement from Bridges TV said.

"Our deepest condolences and prayers go out to the families of the victim," the statement said.

Well it seems he was the biggest stereotype of them all.
