Members of a Netflix crew filming a nature docuseries offshore from Hawaii were attacked by two tiger sharks, according to reports.
The film crew were attempting to get some underwater footage for an upcoming episode of the Netflix nature series, Our Planet II, which is narrated by broadcaster and biologist Sir David Attenborough, but things didn’t quite go as planned, according to the Radio Times.

The crew were especially frightened by the attacks because they were using inflatable boats, not wood or metal hulled crafts.
The attacks were unexpected and violent, according to producer/director Toby Nowlan.

“This ’v’ of water came streaming towards us and this tiger shark leapt at the boat and bit huge holes in it. The whole boat exploded,” Nowlan said of one of the attacks. “We were trying to get it away and it wasn’t having any of it. It was horrific. That was the second shark that day to attack us.”

The crew intended to get close to tiger sharks, but not that close.

“The original idea was to do an underwater shoot with the tiger sharks waiting in the shallows at Laysan,” producer Huw Cordey told Forbes.

“But the first day the tiger sharks were around, the crew got into these inflatable boats — and two sharks attacked them. It was like something out of Jaws,” Cordey added.

The crew were fairly close to land and had to make a frenzied rush to solid ground before their inflatable boat collapsed.
“Suffice to say, they didn’t get any underwater shots,” Cordey drily added.

Nowlan insisted that the behavior of the sharks was “extremely unusual” in how aggressive they were.

“They were incredibly hungry, so there might not have been enough natural food, and they were just trying anything they came across in the water,” Nowlan said.

According to Newsweek, Hawaii’s population of tiger sharks has increased recently and four attacks have occurred this year already. One man lost his foot near Oahu in April, likely from a tiger shark bite. And in December people on shore watched as a woman disappeared never to be seen again near Maui. It is suspected that a tiger shark was the culprit.
Even as the shark population has grown, attacks are still low in number. There have only been 187 unprovoked attacks recorded since 1837 in the Hawaiian Islands.

The three sharks that have been involved in the most attacks on humans include the great white, the bull shark, and the tiger shark.
In January the first shark attack of 2023 was recorded in the Mexican state of Sonora where a diver was gruesomely decapitated by a great white.

The next month, a 16-year-old girl was killed by a suspected shark attack while she was swimming with Dolphins in Australia’s Swan River.

Also, just over a week ago, a Russian man on vacation in Egypt died after being brutally mauled by a shark as beachgoers watched in horror in the waters near one of Egypt’s Red Sea resorts. The shark was later caught and killed and the tourist’s remains were found inside.

Would *I* Lie???
I wouldn't be diving in shark infested waters without a "boomstick"

Often used for slang when selling firearms on non-friendly sites like FB and CL.. a real 'Bookstick" is a 3-4' pole with an handle on one end -no trigger- and a chamber on the other. loaded usually in .44 mag or 12 guage shotgun (slugs), it fires by compressing it against a hard oblect, like a shark, and it pushed the bullet against the firing pin. Close enough to bite, close enough to get yer head blown clean off. Thank you for coming to my "Prevent being eaten by sharks while diving" Ted talk.

On Oahu you can go swimming in the open ocean from a tour boat. There usually reef sharks drawn by the crabbing boats. Guides get in the water with swimers and fend off sharks if they get too close or too inquisitive. Everyone including the sharks know the deal and no one gets hurt... At least no one I've heard of and it's been going on for years.

Tigers? They're a whole different critter. They're called the garbage truck of the ocean and will eat or attack anything... there're reports that includes license plates. Did I mention those suckers get big? Yeah they do and aren't something to mess with.

The orcas are giving the sharks instructions.

This happened in May off Oahu. I wonder if that was a bait or chum container hanging off the side of the kayak where the shark attacked?

Like I posted... these sharks will attack and try to eat just about anything. Whenever I begin to wonder if I'm too old to learn to surf and paddle boarding really dose look like fun..... There's a point in life where wisdom and age collide.

Fair use.

So the 0bamas lost a film crew? Bet they can't do one show like that without bringing up global warming or climate change.

Obviously the crew definately weren't Hawaiian. Sharks are the Hawaiian’s Uncles. you never eat shark.

That didn’t look like a tiger shark to me, I didn’t see any strips.

We use to go at night torching to get shrimp and white crabs, we would shuffle our feet in the sand to get any stingrays to move. The deer hunters on the island were so spoiled they would take the rear end of the deer and throw the front end in the water for the crabs and sharks. It would make us so mad when we would kick a deer carcass. When we long net fished, the sharks would circle the nets and smaller ones would get caught in the net. Never worried when we went out in outriggger. Funny how we spent so much time in the waters and didn’t worry about sharks or shark attacks.

That was his oar. But he was fishing, so there may have been a bait and/or catch bucket.

Most likely though, from how his legs were positioned, his movements seemed like some other shark prey. Likely a tortoise.

As for the OP, who in their right mind goes out on the water in an inflatable raft when expecting to be recording sharks? Actually who in their right minds uses inflatable rafts for anything except emergencies in ocean waters? That just seems like a really, really bad idea.

The United States Navy uses inflatables. I have had them come apart in bad situations. By the way they get a might bigger than 15 feet. Didn’t look like a tiger to me. The guy in the kayak got a good video and a real thrill.

Film stuff has use of some high frequency uhv and vhf stuff. I think 5g may now be part of the communications packages due to the need of high data speeds with 4k resolution requirements over hdmi. This may line up with the orca attacks on account of that...
