You cannot store water in a plastic trash can for any length of time - the material is not stressed for that load, and WILL rupture.

Been storing flushing and plant water in 4-33 gallon Ace Hardware an Rubbermaid plastic trash cans for 3 years now, with nary a leak. They freeze solid in a prolonged cold snap, though........
