The county that I live in, Matagorda County in Texas has not counted one single vote. The machine they had and have had started out last night counting ballots 2 at a time, a hair dryer was used to try to keep the ballots from sticking together, that didn't work so a new machine was sent for from Dallas, when that got here it didn't work either, a tech was called in from Houston and as of right now they are still working on it and no counting has begun. Now we are only looking at 20,000 votes but we also have no results for our local folks either. In a statement the County clerk stated that she has been trying to get a new machine since 1999 but has been turned down because of the new voting regulation that will become effective in 2006.
So it is with dismay that I feel cheated, although there does not appear to be any fraud related to this it does seem to me that this entire country needs to find a way for it's citizens to vote and know that their vote has been counted. If problems have occured in just 1 county per state you could be looking at 1 million votes, divide that by 1/2 and you get 500,000. That could change many an election. I'm sure not here in Texas but still I feel cheated!!!!! :sht:

It's always good to keep in mind that if you are counting something, it doesn't matter in which order you count them.

For example, you are in the store and need to buy something for $12. You get out a stack of dollar bills, and start counting from the top. You count off twelve of them, and the ones at the bottom of the stack are left over. It turns out you didn't need them, but they generally don't complain that they weren't counted.

Let's suppose you turned over the stack and started counting from the bottom. You count off twelve, and the ones on the top of the stack are left over. It turns out you didn't need them, but they generally don't complain that they weren't counted.

I think you all missed what I was trying to say, I know that they will be counted but I am sitting here listening to Bush's acceptance speech and my votes not counted yet...that is a bad feeling. I wasn't trying to be partisan or imply foul play..I'm saying our voting system needs to be changed!

Tisha - I understand what you're saying and I understand your frustration.

Tisha, I'm sorry for the technical problems your county experienced. Although it would not have made a difference EVERYONE wants to be considered as important enough to have their vote counted. Be patient, your county will have it's results in soon. You are right about needing more accuracy and consistency in our polls and most importantly the equipment. ;)

I don't know if the system needs to be changed, so much as the equipment used. Those electronic machines with no paper trail make me very uneasy. Too bad they can't eliminate the machines altogether and just use paper -- carefully designed ballots that are plain and simple to read. In some ways I like Oregon's mail-in ballots, because it gave us time to read about the issues between each vote, instead of trying to remember what we'd planned to vote for while standing in a voting booth. But, we are also depending on the honesty of the people who receive and count the ballots, too.

Bush won our great state......by a landslide. 20,000 votes would'nt of mattered. However, when it comes to your local elections I doubt that our national security or economy hinges on having the votes counted instantanously as a presidential election does. They'll get counted and the Southest Texas dems will get their wins ;)

In Texas Bush had 61% of the vote, Kerry had 38%. How many votes that didn't get counted in your county would it take to change anything?

Bush: 4,495,797 voted
Kerry: 2,816,501 voted

Just relax. When I was a kid, you knew before the night was out who the winner was. They are just being more careful these days.

Or, if it makes you feel better, I will count your vote now:

Bush: 4,495,797 voted
Kerry: 2,816,502 voted (or add in the number missed in your county)

Have a nice day
;)
