A blog post from Ms. Magazine criticizes the new Wonder Woman film because the title character is not a fat, femme, woman of color.

Ms. Magazine, which was founded by feminist activists Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes in 1971, published an online blog post by author Stephanie Abraham this week, lamenting the new Wonder Woman movie on the grounds that the title character is an attractive, white woman, much like the character in the popular comic books that inspired the film.

The post, which is titled, “When Will Wonder Woman Be a Fat, Femme Woman of Color?” laments the fact that the movie chose to portray the character as she was portrayed in the source material, rather than as an overweight black gay woman (femme is defined as “a queer person who presents and acts in a traditionally feminine manner.”) She claims that had a black actress been cast to play Wonder Woman, “white supremacists” would have emerged to condemn the decision.

Abraham specifically condemns the movie for the way that the lead character conducts herself, specifically a pivotal battle scene in which Wonder Woman “struts across the battlefield as if on a catwalk.” Abraham claims that this served to reinforce the cultural stereotype that a woman’s “physical strength plays second fiddle to their beauty, upholding the notion that in order to access power women must be beautiful in a traditional way.”

Abraham expresses her desire that the film could have spotlighted female characters with “fat, thick, and short body types,” citing the example of large NFL linebackers, who are seen by society as warriors.

Especially with the body positivity movement gaining steam, the film could have spotlighted female warriors with fat, thick and short body types. While people have said that warriors can’t be fat, some of our best paid male athletes are, particularly linebackers on the football field, and no one doubts their physical strength.

The post concludes by lamenting the fact that the movie furthered the stereotype that women are the more compassionate gender. “Why couldn’t Wonder Woman fight for justice and eliminate bad guys without having to in the end make it about love?” Abraham asks. “Perhaps a more interesting question is: Why don’t male superheroes do the same?”

In fact, neurobiological research reveals that women not only process emotion differently than men but also have hardwired maternal instincts that might increase their capacity for compassion. Research published in the New York Times revealed that the maternal instinct is wired into the brain. Research conducted at UCLA revealed that men and women exhibited opposite responses in the right front of the insular cortex, which is responsible for emotion. A 1995 study from the Scandinavian Journal of Science that was referenced in research at UC Berkeley revealed that “women involuntarily imitate other peoples’ emotional expressions more than men—a behavior thought to reflect increased activity of “mirror neurons.”

Someone needs to do a skit showing a over weight black woman that works the system for all the free services she can. Go's off on verbal diatribes spoken in some gibberish no one can understand when she does not get her way because she is black. Then pulls out a tire Iron and a trash can lid as a shield and attacks the social workers in the welfare department.
Then steeps outside and slaps the living crap out of some black dude that really deserves it and takes his bling and cell phone before waddling off to the hock shop.

When the movie studios, and directors are ready to ruin themselves and kill the franchise with one film. Dumb bitch needs to realize movies are made to make money, not make libbies feel good. Unless it's a Michael Moore production.

Just another self hating white liberal.

So... WHAT, exactly, ARE the things that write for Ms magazine? They apparently aren't biological women!!

Ok, they probably are. And it's likely the reason they are so hate filled, angry and unhappy is because they've deliberately denied their natural biological imperatives in order to "get ahead" in a very screwed up world.

There are such videos posted to you tube frequently. One of them showed just such a "person" skillfully crushing her opponent with her body weight. Don't underestimate the market value of worthlessness in today's America.

so if its so important in the eyes of the MS blogger that a fat black gay chick be Wonder Woman why doesnt she and others who think that PAY for such a movie to be made and marketed?

naww, it is so much easier to sit on their butts griping and blaming others for not risking money to make such a film. let MS fund the film and see how it works out.

When they can find a woman who qualifies AND can actually Do the required stunts. Dunno of ANY overweight ANYONE who can do even the simple, light stunts they had to do for the film.

BOTH leading women spent MONTHS working in martial arts so they could do just SOME of the fighting stunts. ONE of them claims to have put on 30 pounds in order to survive the filming. And THAT was 30 pounds of PURE MUSCLE.....

Skinny Ms cow has no clue.

The film was made to make money. The producers thought a pretty slender woman would attract more of an audience.

How stupid can Ms magazine get?

When fat, femme women of color can achieve anything other than sitting on the couch in their own dried urine, eating donuts...

I haven't watched the new Wonder Woman - and I won't. The original actress (name escapes me) simply can't be surpassed.

Tess Holiday has the "look" for a very fat girl, but she is white. No way to film interesting fight scenes with someone that big. Sumo wrestling style would be as close as you could get. You would have to re-work the whole film.

I wouldn't be against it - as long as it made money.
Either it attracts an audience, or it doesn't. I wouldn't want to invest money or time in a charity event.

I suspect you are thinking of Linda Carter......

Though you might consider the film a try...

They did a LOT of work to get most of the scenes as "realistic" as a phantasy can get.

Maybe they should bring Linda Carter back, and make a WW that is less of a martial arts film, and more of a suspenseful thriller. Surely, the character has grown in wisdom over the years, she can vanquish the enemy with her wits - that might make for an interesting story line that is also profitable.

The sci-fi writer Brittany Pettibone talks about this sort of thing with her novel (co-written, series?). She didn't find today's female kick-ass fight scenes all that satisfying. She wanted her heroine to overcome danger by outsmarting the adversary.

I haven't read her book, so I can't go into it further, but if I were planning a movie, I'd probably want to enlist Pettibone's help.

Getting back to a firm with more of a fighting emph., perhaps we could make a compelling story-line featuring Nordic beauty Lauren Southern turning back migrant jihadi boats off the coast of France, in the epic struggle to save Europe.

Is blonde a colour?

Why don't they come up with their own instead of trying to force established figures into their concept of PC? I would LOVE to see what they would come up with and how fast it would crash and burn, like the recent comic book 'series' that was shut down after 2 issues (out of 4) for non-interest. It was geared towards blacks.

Leftists love experimenting with other people's money and living, it's about time they put their money where their big fat subversive mouths are.

I agree with Flipper, except done right (and I'd start with a comic book or novel) it might not crash and burn but it would NOT be Wonder Women; we all know who she is and her "ideal" is not a fat, fem, black women; I mean a very fit black actress I think could play the part, but I think that would have been forcing things at this time.

But I'm all for different types of women as heroes, in different ways; but then my favorite mystery series stars a women archeologist (wife of a male archeologist because in the Victorian era that is just how it was done) she is a spinster when she marries and most certainly of a "certain age" when the series eventually stops after about 12 books because the author passed away.

There are a couple of the novels (one in particular) that stand alone and I'm amazed Hollywood hasn't made that film yet, but then I guess they think women over forty don't watch movies (see the late Carrie Fishers comments on being forced to lose weight to play a women general in her 60's).

I haven't seen Wonder Women yet, I'll probably have to wait for Netflix (no local theaters) but it sounds like a great deal of fun and wonderfully done; we don't need to try and "PC" Wonder Women anymore than we need "Thor" as a goddess (besides her name would be Thora, that's how Old Norse names work) but there is nothing stopping a novel or comic with a strong black women of size; mopping up the bad guys with her wits and her weight lifter's shoulders before going home to her girlfriend- but she's a different person and a different story.

Saw the movie 2 days ago. Pretty good. Godot nails the wonder woman character and has guaranteed her continued employment in the role for another 10 years. Movie has pulled in half a billion dollars so far and will be a classic just like spiderman, batman and superman.

One of the best lines in the movie was when the male lead was coming out of the pool and she asked him "Would you say you are an average representation of a male human?" The audience cracked up.

Feminists and minorities need to get a life.

On and On, South of Heaven
I won't watch it... I hated Wonder Woman growing up ( but LOVED me some Linda Carter... Meow... ). I LOVE the fact that they got an actual warrior to play the part in the movie and the fact she is Jewish is causing a lot of heck at the theatres in the middle east ( many have banned the movie ).

Anyway, all that said, there are plenty of examples of fat femme women of color on tv, The View comes to mind, and movies. They just can't appropriate the title of "Wonder", unless it's, "I wonder if I can eat another piece of cake?" or, "I wonder whose baby this is?"...

You show me a grossly obese woman that can fight for more than 30 seconds without having a heart attack and we'll talk...

Stupid feminists...

They can't come up with their own anything! The left is primarily lazy by nature and thievish by habit. They want what is not theirs but they want it done their way.

They are behind the curve. Already had a fat, black woman superhero. She was on a TV show hosted by Stan Lee in the early 90's called "Who wants to be a Supergero?". Lasted one season.

First, I think it's Lynda, not Linda.

Why not a 250 lb black dwarf from the Congo with three teeth?
