Modelo Especial widens sales gap over Bud Light in wake of Dylan Mulvaney fiasco

Modelo Especial, the nation’s new king of beers, continued to outsell Bud Light after its disastrous tie-up with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney, according to the latest data.

The Mexican beer widened its lead in year-to-date sales over Bud Light, accounting for 8.4% of beer sales in stores through Aug. 19, compared to Bud Light’s 8.2% share, Bump Williams Consulting and NielsonIQ reported Monday.

“More consumers are buying Modelo more frequently and in greater quantities before the summer ends,” Williams, the head of the consultancy, told The Post on Monday.

Retailers have been devoting “more shelf space” to Modelo Especial to cash in on its surge in popularity, added Williams.

Last week, Modelo surpassed Bud Light in year-to-date sales to end the Anheuser-Busch brand’s two-decade rein as the top-selling beer in the US.

Modelo had an 8.34% share of the market, compared to Bud Light’s 8.28% through Aug. 12, according to a NielsonIQ report.

The Mexican beer, which is distributed in the US by Costellation Brands, has consistently beaten Bud Light in monthly sales since May — after unprecedented outrage over the company tapping Mulvaney on April 1 to promote the brand.

A national boycott of Bud Light has shown no signs of abating.

On a weekly basis sales of Bud Light declined by 26.8% through Aug. 19
while sales of Modelo Especial over the same period grew by 15.9%.

Other non-Anheuser-Busch related brands are also stealing market share, including Miller Lite, which saw 18.5% growth in sales, Coors Light with 21.6% growth and Yuengling Lager with 19.7% increase for the week ended Aug. 19, according to the data.

Meanwhile, Budweiser sales have been hurt by the controversy, declining 10.3% over the same period. Michelob Ultra – another Anheuser-Busch brand – has seen some improvement with a 0.4% increase in sales in the week-long period.

Earlier this month, Anheuser-Busch InBev – the Belgian-based parent of the brewery – reported a 10.5% drop in revenue and nearly 30% decrease in profit in the second quarter, according to the company.

And yet, others follow, making the same mistakes.
One might think that they were "all in on it"

I thought the company that owns Bud Lite also owns Modelo?
Constellation Brands has ownership of the Modelo/Corona brands within the US. AnheuserBusch/InBev owns those brands everywhere but the US. Excerpt from the Wikipedia article about Constellation Brands:
In 2013, Constellation acquired Grupo Modelo's US beer business from Anheuser-Busch InBev. The transaction included full ownership of Crown Imports LLC which provided Constellation with complete, independent control of all aspects of the US commercial business; a brewery in Mexico; exclusive perpetual brand license in the US to import, market and sell Corona and the Modelo brands and the freedom to develop brand extensions and innovations for the US market. Constellation had formerly imported Corona and other Modelo brands to the United States and acquired the US rights to those brands as a part of an anti-trust settlement permitting Modelo's acquisition by Anheuser-Busch InBev. It now produces its own versions of those products for the US, with Modelo serving all other countries. In 2014, Constellation finalized a joint venture with Owens-Illinois and completed the acquisition of Anheuser-Busch InBev's glass production plant, located adjacent to the company's brewery in Nava, Mexico.

The only thing I find interesting is that its Modello filling the void. I would have thought it would have been miller lite or coors light.

Notice how CNBC couldn't manage one little peep about Bud Light's woke disaster which is what is fueling Modelo's rise in sales? The MSM wants us to think this is happening in some kind of vacuum.

Constellation Brands beats on earnings as Modelo-fueled beer momentum continues

  • Constellation Brands reported double-digit sales growth in its beer business as the division continues to dominate.

  • Revenue growth was driven by demand for its Modelo Especial and Modelo Chelada brands as well as Corona Extra.

  • The company raised its guidance for its fiscal 2024.

Constellation Brands on Thursday reported earnings and revenue that topped analysts’ expectations for its fiscal second quarter of 2024.

The Mexican beer powerhouse, owner of the Modelo Especial and Corona Extra brands, reported double-digit sales growth in its beer business as the division continues to dominate the overall beer and high-end categories. Meanwhile sales of wine and spirits lagged.

The company raised its fiscal 2024 earnings per share outlook to a range of $9.60 to $9.80, up from a prior range of $9.35 to $9.65.

Here’s what Constellation reported for the three months ended August 31, compared with what Wall Street was expecting, based on a survey of analysts by LSEG, formerly known as Refinitiv:

Earnings per share: $3.70 adjusted vs. $3.36 expected

Revenue: $2.84 billion vs. $2.82 billion expected

Constellation’s beer portfolio posted 12% sales growth, boosted by 8.7% growth in shipments. The Modelo brand family was a particular bright spot: Modelo Especial grew nearly 9%, while Modelo Chelada brands posted growth of more than 40%.

Modelo Especial remains the best-selling brand in the U.S. beer category, the company said.

The company’s wine and spirits brands, however, underperformed year over year. The category posted a 14% decrease in sales and nearly 8% decrease in depletions — an industry term for the number of cases sold to retailers by a distributor.

The division wasn’t without its standout brands, though: Constellation’s Meiomi and Kim Crawford wine brands saw 7% and 6% depletion growth, respectively, while its craft spirit, Mi Campo tequila, reported more than 60% depletion growth.

“We continue to expect solid growth acceleration and margin improvement from our overall Wine and Spirits Business in the second half,” said CEO Bill Newlands.

Back in June, the company delivered an earnings beat and reiterated its forecast. In its previous quarter, beer sales rose 11% year over year driven by stable consumer demand and higher pricing.

I've noticed watching college and NFL games (not much of latter, because ZZZZzzz), that Modelo are nearly all the beer commercials, ha ha ha. Doesn't really matter though, as Budweiser's umbrella company owns Modelo anyway. So, its share market went from woke Bud Light to Modelo. Just means that Modelo brand marketers internally in the firm are now more powerful. Oh well....

It's a weird relationship in the USA.

wiki,

In May of 2023, Modelo Especial became the top selling beer in the United States by retail sales volume, surpassing Bud Light. While both beers are owned by the same parent company outside of the United States, the Modelo brand (not the beer though) is owned by Constellation Brands (they don't brew the Modelo beer either) in the US and therefore is not affiliated with AB InBev.[7][8]

. . . .
I commented on the Modelo / ABInbev thing on the members section of Townhall back in July. They reviewed my post and stopped it from being seen by others. I subsequently dropped my VIP Gold membership in all the Townhall related sites. I saved a screen shot of their review notification, here's what I wrote that they censored. Everything I found about Modelo pointed directly to AB/InBev and the boycott seems to be exactly what was expected.

And then...

Bill Gates buys $95M worth of Anheuser-Busch shares following Bud Light disaster

On an unrelated note, judging from the photo of Bill Gates, his physical shape suggests some long term health concerns.

He is overweight, is developing "man boobs", which is typical of an excessive carbonate diet.

The bags under eyes suggest "a fatty liver" situation. Again primarily due to excessive carbs in the diet.

Could well be.

Wine, spirits and beer producers are being traded on a regular basis. Most of the new owners are interested in rolling new-to-then profits into their corporate bottom lines. Most ot the amalgamaters are wise enough to let their brands fight for market share.
