Maybe, or he saw the likely outcome considering the current environment, and knew there was no way he was going to survive even though innocent. At the very least his career is done and the next decade is going to be spent in custody and in courts. He's 63 and perhaps figures he had a good run. Time to check out.

Not so sure about that...
Had an uncle years ago...accused of a similar thing...one “victim”, anyway...
He maintained his innocence and fought it.
The defense lawyer said this charges are obviously bogus, we can easily beat this thing, but, it’ll take money...
First went all his retirement money (he was in his early 60’s), then saving, another mortgage on a paid off house, borrowed big money from my dad...
Near the end, the cops had knocked the charges down from life in prison to where they were trying to get him to plead to some small charge...by this time, my uncle had aged 20 years, and was broke...
Lawyer said I need another 20k and they’ll drop all charges...but my uncle was broke...financial
y and physically...and lawyers don’t work for free, so,
My uncle ”had to plead” to a much smaller charge but which kept him from prison...by this time, he was on constant oxygen, in a wheelchair, and a shell of what he used to be.
He died a couple of years later and often said he wished he’d have eaten a bullet...

I had one friend who went through what I believe was a false accusation. I had one person threaten to level an accusation like that against me.
Had she done so, she would likely be dead now and I would have gone to prison for something I did, not something I didn't do.

As I recall, Blackbeard used them until he got tired of them, and then threw them over the side. There was, as far as I know, no counseling or anatomically correct where-did-he-touch-you sessions.
ETA: Call me a liar. It was Charles Gibbs I had in mind. His record for long-term relationships was a Dutch girl who lasted two months before he dropped her over.

i don't know why, but i am kinda on the same vibe as bw. we have seen how so many times, the scummy filth of the earth have infiltrated the kids' programs for the express purpose of gaining trust and then abusing it.
we have also seen many people be accused with false allegations, and it completely ruins their lives and the lives of their families.
if there is one thing i hate, it is lying. lying is not ok in general, but lying about certain things are so completely and unbelievably live destroying, and this kind of allegation will do that. so if he was totally innocent or absolutely guilty, we shall never know unless there is video of it or a taped confession from him.
i was just having a similar conversation with fezzik jr today. i said it would be a very smart thing to never be alone with a girl, and group dating is better. he asked why and i presented a scenario of a girl claiming rape, but him not doing it and being innocent. at first, it didn't click in his brain that someone would lie about that. then asked him to think what would happen after and accusation like that. as he extrapolated further and further out, you could see how he very much got it.
i told him that even if there was absolute proof that he didn't do anything wrong, even if the girl confessed to lying, there would always be some people that would not believe it. he understood and realized that no one would trust him again and his life would be ruined.
i hope these things are not true for everyone's sake. but if not true, this man died because he knew his life would be over no matter what.
i am a very firm believer that if it is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the accuser lied, they should have the fullest sentence the accused would have receive if convicted, and then add half of the max sentence to it.
lying should hurt. lying and causing damage to another because of it should really hurt.
