The state Department of Labor and Economic Development said volunteers who wish to participate must commit for at least 90 days as part of the refugee support program.

"Programs like the Welcome Corps advance the Office of Global Michigan’s mission to make Michigan the home for opportunity for our immigrant, refugee and ethnic communities," said Poppy Hernandez, Global Michigan Director and Michigan’s Chief Equity and Inclusion Officer. "Expanded refugee resettlement pathways empower more Michiganders to support our state’s growing refugee population and build a more welcoming and inclusive Michigan for all."

Single migrant men, mostly from West Africa, congregate in Tompkins Square Park as volunteers give away food and clothing in the East Village neighborhood of New York City. Michigan is asking residents to help house migrants arriving to the state.
The migrants will come from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela, all points of origin where many have been hoping to apply for asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The request comes as multiple cities are grappling with how to house and provide services to newly arrived migrants from the southern border.

Last year, Massachusetts officials asked residents to open their doors as migrant shelters were full at the time.

"Most importantly, if you have an extra room or suite in your home, please consider hosting a family. Housing and shelter is our most pressing need and become a sponsor family," said Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll.

There have been sponsorship programs in US history, but only legal refugees, such as after WWII, were usually involved. The last time I remember governments getting seriously affected was during the Cuban Boat People situation, and it was mishandled with no vetting. So-called Sponsors would take people in for a month or two and then kick people out. Not everyone, of course, but enough that social workers were pulling together their own money to buy beans and rice because, at that time, no Federal Bennies were involved, or at least not automatically.

I think that technically, most new (legal) immigrants are supposed to have a sponsor, though most often these days, they are family and unpaid. This program is unlikely to end well if it is as badly vetted and handled as the last one was.

My passport is renewed as well, but in my particular situation, relocating overseas is just exchanging one set of problems for another. If you haven't looked into it, you'll be amazed at how many countries have let Muzzies in and are suffering the consequences. France is one example. On the other hand, Romania says NO loudly and often, but they still have a number of struggles with their economy and medical sector, although things are getting better.

I'm going to argue that a bit. Not all of the Dearborn Muslims support the terrorists or would welcome illegals into their homes, especially if there's a lot of under-aged women living under their roof. Some have built nice businesses or are making decent incomes. They don't want to be under an Iman's thumb, nor do they want trouble. They just want to continue making money, taking vacations, and raising their families.

It's sort of like what happened in Israel: a lot of the pioneer rebels have been replaced by their children and grandchildren who are seeking a less religious and easier life.
