At the Hospital

They were in luck, kinda. Deloris was right about being able to take the elevator down. She just didn’t realize the elevator didn’t stop at the lobby level. Now they were in the basement, trying to find their way to an exit.

Deloris was in front with a flashlight in one hand as she pushed the cart in front of her. Ivar was pushing Sofia in the wheelchair behind her, a headlamp pushing back the darkness.

Ivar saw she was starting to get a bit frantic with her movements. He knew she was starting to panic.

“Deloris, Stop a moment.”

“We have to find the exit. There’s a below grade entrance back here somewhere!”

“Deloris stop.”

She turned towards him. He saw the same wild eyes he had seen many times. She was someone in a situation she couldn’t control in spite of her efforts.

“Slow down and think. What all is down here? Is there anything we need to add to your cart? As we look for those things, we will find the exit you remember.” Ivar said in a calming tone. He didn’t need her freaking out down here. He needed her to find the exit and get him to the SUV so they could get out of here and back to the house.

Deloris stood there looking at him. And stood there. Finally, she spoke.

“You’re right. There might be another thing or two we can grab, but all the good stuff is behind electronically locked doors. Let’s keep going.” She turned and started walking down the hall, but slower this time.

Ivar hoped Deloris was better now. He needed her to stay focused on the goal.

It took some time, but they finally found the exit Deloris was looking for. It let them out on the back side of the hospital, away from the ER and the main parking lot. This meant a long and mostly uphill hike to get to the parking lot they needed. They were doing this by moonlight now, not wanting to attract anyone’s attention. Ivar had visions of letting go of the wheelchair to draw his pistol, only to have Sofia roll downhill and tipping over into a snowbank like a Buster Keaton movie short.

At one point they saw some movement over near the E.R. but Ivar couldn’t make it out and had absolutely no interest in getting involved unless they came his way. He had one goal; get Sofia out of here. For this, he almost didn’t care who he would have to kill to make it happen.

The next struggle was getting Sofia laid across the backseat. She was still out of it and not able to help, but conscious enough to be more of a hindrance than if she was asleep. Between Ivar and Deloris, they were able to get her situated and wrapped back up in the blankets.

Ivar popped the hatch to the rear of the SUV for the whole basket of crap Deloris had in the cart. He couldn’t tell what was in most of them since they were mostly bundles wrapped up in sheets, but he did know there was a lot more than he expected. A cargo strap secured the folded wheelchair to the roof before he joined Deloris and Sofia inside the SUV.

“Once I start up, we might get a lot of attention. Whatever happens, stay calm and belted in unless I tell you otherwise. Like you know what to do in a hospital with patients, well, this is my world. We got this. Is there anywhere else we need to go real quick before I head to the house?”

“How far is it to the house?”

“About two hours unless we push it. Why?”

“All this jostling and banging about isn’t good for Sofia. We need to get her better situated and her next round of drugs in her pretty soon. I guess I have about all I need already with me.”

Ivar could tell Deloris was feeling uncertain again.

“Don’t worry, Deloris. You took care of ours; we will take care of you. I promise.”

The sun wasn’t up, not even close, when the radio woke Silas up. The message was short, but enough to spur action.

“Babe, wake up. Ivar is on his way and he’s bringing Sofia with him.”

That was enough to startle Amber to full consciousness.

“What the hell? She’s supposed to be there another week or so. He’s headed here with her now?”

“Yup, maybe half an hour out. We need to get someplace set up for Sofia to be, and right now. I know she isn’t going to be feeling good after two hours in the car.”

“Well, if she is dosed right, she might not be feeling anything at all. Damn! Did he say why?” Amber said as she threw some clothes on.

“I gave you all the info I have on this. Not holding anything back. I just know we need to be ready to help get her inside and situated so we can get more answers.”

“Shit, everything has stairs. Why don’t we put her on one of the couches in the living room for now. The fireplace will keep her warm and she will be close enough to the middle of things we can all keep an eye on her.”

“OK, well, I’ll go wake the others. Why don’t you start the coffee?”

“Good idea. When they get here, we can start looking at food and plan what’s next.”

“Don’t worry, Deloris. You took care of ours; we will take care of you. I promise.”

“I hope so. Without you guys, I have pretty much nothing, nobody. No one there had a clue what they were going to do if things got worse. Hell, I didn’t know until we talked. Please don’t let me down. You guys are all I have now. I hope you are right about the other guys accepting me on this trip.”

“We have you covered. We will have to do some shuffling as we get ready to go North, like which vehicle you will be in, where you are sleeping and so on and so forth. We were supposed to work on that this week as Sofia got stronger and able to make the trip, but …”

“Which vehicle? How many are there? How big a group are you guys?”

“You’ve met almost all of them before. That’s why Amber and I weren’t worried too much about approaching you. And you have met most the people we are going to join up at Paige’s grandfather’s place.”

Ivar could see some of the magnitude of everything was becoming apparent to Deloris now.

“Look, we have a good plan, plenty of resources and we want you along. We wanted to take care of you since you did so much for us. We know you know how to work hard and work with others, you have good skills, and already know most of us. You will see when we get to the house. I told you family takes care of family. Don’t worry. We might be a little different and things maybe strange at first but we will help you understand us. You will have to help us understand you too.”

“I hope so…”

“You kept Sofia alive. You already scored a whole bunch of points with the group. So when I say Don’t worry I mean it. Now let’s get her to our home so we can get both of you settled in.”

Delores was still not convinced but what else did she have. It was this, let her ex find her or look for what was left of her biological family, wherever they were. She reached over gripped Ivar hand tightly.

“Put the hammer down and let’s go home.”

‘I hope I am not making another of those stupid impulsive life decision,’ Delores thought to herself as Ivar sped to her new home. ‘ God help me please!’

you also have the Deloris/Delores alternating thing going on in the last couple paragraphs of #7,772 but perhaps you want to keep it and give her an evil identical twin sister... also a nurse... but not so "caring"[evil laughter].. perhaps the sister has taken up with the ex...
No, just the wife’s edits. We will fix the Deloris issue, although an evil identical twin sister nurse who turns out to be just her own schizophrenic alter ego could work…

You do realise you're encouraging him (possibly aiding and abetting) to twist this story and our collective minds, don't you? Something he doesn't need much prodding for; I know you remember Ginger Yeti.

Just saying . . .

Don’t go down the “it was all a dream“ route.

There are far too many options on the shelf in that direction Such as…

This is all delusions racing through Paige’s brain as she lays in a vegetative state post Frickel
punch, meanwhile Sabine is in prison for shooting him there in the armory..

or

Paige didn’t scream when she woke up next to Henrik, and took decisive action to join him

or

Sabine left instead of just picking up the rings from the base

or

Petra never survived the assault

or

Sofia….

and so on and so forth

and that’s a lot of sharks to jump

At the House

Ivar, Deloris and Sofia’s arrival set off a flurry of activity. The first issue was getting Sofia into the house and situated on one of the couches in the living room. Deloris’ presence was a surprise to all but Amber. She hadn’t had a chance to discuss what Ivar and her talked about since they wanted to do it as a group before they approached Deloris. Too late now.

Once they had Sofia situated to Deloris’s standard and the next round of drugs onboard, they adjourned to the dining room table for some breakfast and discussion over some much needed food.

“Now we need to get you somewhere to bed down, Deloris. You and Ivar need food and a bed. You’ve been up working all night.” Amber had her forceful doctor tone on now.

“Well, we know where Ivar is sleeping, but where do we put Deloris?” Silas asked, since it seemed Amber had all of this planned out.

“I’ve already got most my stuff moved to my trailer. She can have my room.” Petra said, wanting to be helpful. She was spending a lot of time with Jennifer in the barn working anyway, may as well sleep in her new portable dorm room. Better to try it out and iron out any problems now instead of on the road.

“That could work. Silas, Jonas, can you help bring Deloris’ stuff in from the SUV while I help Petra and Jennifer get Petra’s stuff and get Deloris settled in?”

“Sure thing.” Silas replied.

Everyone started moving with a speed and deliberateness Deloris wasn’t used to. Coming here might not have been an error

In the Barn Later that Evening

A lot of work in the barn was still going on late into the evening. Once Ivar woke up, Amber and Silas told him of their idea and plan. It had Ivar, Sofia and Deloris in the Crew Cab for the drive north and since they were already there, they would use the trailer behind it to sleep at the lay over points. The Jensons would drive and use Ivar and Sofia’s truck and camper for the drive.

With all the points Silas and Amber laid out, Ivar was on board with the plan. He also agreed with the accelerated timetable. It was time to get out of here. With no real medical advantage to staying here, they needed to get north. There they had more resources. They just had to get there.

Ivar worked at moving clothes and supplies from the camper to the trailer while Jonas moved things the opposite way. With all that moving back and forth. Silas and Petra stayed out of the way by loading the R32 onto the last trailer so they could stack the last of the boxes into place.

Amber, Jennifer and Deloris were working in the house. Deloris was trying to get a handle on Sofia’s condition. She had a helper at her shoulder. Jennifer tried to learn as much as she could so she could help Sofia.

Deloris was still trying to get her bearings here, but she had a patient to focus on, so she had a center point to keep her focused. She was also glad to see Jennifer doing so well. Normally she didn’t get to see the patients later, after they are all healed up.

Amber knew she and Deloris would sit and compare notes later on Sofia’s condition and progress. Deloris had a lot more experience at post operative recovery than she did.
