At the House

Just before the house Jonas darted ahead of Petra so he could park out of the way and open the barn doors for her to pull the truck straight inside. He just hoped Silas had everything out of the way and the spot set up they had talked about yesterday when he left.

In front of the barn, off to one side, were parked most of the vehicles. Dang! It looked like a used car lot around here these days! All the SUVs, the work truck, Henrik’s jeep, all out here to make room for the trailers and the trucks with campers to be inside the barn alongside enough working space for Petra’s truck and whatever other thing was being worked on. He found a spot next to Henrik’s jeep and hopped out. He met Petra in the driveway. She rolled down the window as he walked up.

“I’ll get the door so you can drive right inside. There is supposed to be enough room for you to work on this and the new trailer. It should already be inside. Silas told me yesterday they were unloading everything into the back of the barn so we could sort through and plan which ones to do after you get done with your stuff.”

“Sounds good.”

Jonas noticed Petra sounded distracted or disconnected. He spoke quieter and softer now.

“You OK? Did you want me to run up and grab some clothes for you? We should probably have Amber check you out.”

She shook her head as she answered him. “No, I’ll be fine. If you could grab the jeans off the back of the door in my room that would be great. I just want to get inside and get to work.”

“Twenty minutes looking at things and planning what you need and how many helpers, then you get your ass to lunch, get some food in you. AFTER lunch, you and however many helpers can come out here and do shit. Anyone you don’t need will be working other projects. I think Sofia has been on Ivar’s ass about getting the radios in, so he will need to look at what to put in this truck.”

“I just ate not that long ago.”

“No, you didn’t. You need food, not a snack. Your tank was past empty. You need to fill it up. All you got was something to limp you along until we got here. Don’t make me sic Amber and Sofia on you for your own health.” He said with a grin to lessen the sting of his threat.

“OK. I promise.”

“You better. Twenty minutes, and I’ll be back down in a few moments with your pants.”

Jonas saw a faint smile at his comment. He’ll take it. He darted over to open the barn doors. Inside, he saw they were busy while they were gone. Stacks of boxes. Rolls of hoses and who knows what all were against the back wall and a space was cleared around and beside the newest trailer of the group. A large empty space was right in front of the workbench for Petra to pull straight in. As soon as the truck was inside the barn, he shut the door.

“I’ll be right back with that stuff” he called over his shoulder to Petra as he headed for the inside door. As he headed that way, he saw Ivar, or at least he thought it was Ivar, under the dash of Silas’s truck. Jennifer was in the passenger seat, handing tools to him as he worked.

“How’s it going, kidlet?”

Jennifer looked over at Jonas. “Great! Mr. Ivar is teaching me new swear words!”

He glared with mock fierceness at her. “ and what are the rules for swear words?”

“I can learn them, but I’m not supposed to use them. I know, Daddy.” She smiled.

“She helping, Ivar?”

“She’s a great help. This shit is harder than ninth-grade Algebra with only nine toes!” came Ivar’s muffled voice from under the dash.

Jonas darted across to the house and in the back door. Once inside he saw Sofia in the kitchen talking with Amber and Silas.

“It’s about time you got your ass back. We were just about to go looking for you.” Amber exclaimed before Jonas could say a word.

“Yeah, I know. There was a bit of trouble last night.”

“Problems with the trucks?” Silas was suddenly worried.

“No, people problems. The mechanic showed up and tried to claim possession of the trucks. Things got physical about the time I got there to defuse the whole thing.”

“Is Petra hurt?” Amber was instantly trying to get her mind into trauma doctor mode.

“I don’t think so, or at least not that she wants to admit. I think more scared than hurt. She also ran her sugar levels out to zero. We had to stop so I could get some back in her so she could think well enough to drive. Please don’t tell her I told you guys. She’s embarrassed about it. I just know we need to worry about making sure everybody keeps their levels up with all the work and stress we have right now and at her size, she is the canary of the group. If she starts drooping, we need to worry about all of us.” Jonas tried to soft sell the damage to Petra, while warning the others.

“Don’t worry. I’ll take care of it. Carbs and protein for lunch should help. Lunch in half an hour.” Sofia said as she stepped back over to the stove.

Jonas looked at Silas. “What we have from the RV dealer is all we are going to get from him. That bridge is burned.”

Silas thought to ask more but knew Jonas long enough to see by his mannerisms this wasn’t the time nor place.

“I guess what we have will have to do. It’s more than we did have.”

“Yup.” Jonas said as he went up the stairs to the bedrooms.

Amber watched this exchange. She knew there was a lot they weren’t saying. She would twist Silas’ arm on this later. For now, she had to worry about Petra’s mental state after being attacked. She didn’t know how bad she was hurt or how Petra was taking it. Until she wanted to talk, she had to play dumb and just watch. Well, watch and be ready.

In the Truck in the Barn

Petra was sitting in the truck. She was trying to think of all the pieces she still needed to bring together. Hook up the second tank. Change the tires out. Put the other tanks in the bed of the truck and plumb them. Wire the extra batteries in the trailer. Mount and hook up the baby generator. Mount and hook up the welder. On and on the list stretched before her. They promised they would help her. She sure hoped so, otherwise it would take forever.

She knew she would rather think about those things than trying to make sense of some of her other jumbled memories. She wasn’t sure which ones were real and which were figments of her scrambled brain. One thing she did know, she was staying in the truck and making notes until Jonas came back down with some pants for her. She really didn’t want to answer a bunch of embarrassing questions about why she was running around pants-less.

It’s bad enough Jonas had to do what he did. She hoped things wouldn’t get weird between them. She was really grateful he saved her but was that the only reason her brain was concocting things? She thought she had either half a memory or her imagination was inventing what his hands felt like on her. Then her brain wouldn’t let it go and was comparing it to when Sabine’s hands were on her stomach. Then her brain was painting a picture of the three-way romp of Sabine, Jonas and Andrea. Holy Shit! She knew her brain got horny when she got hungry but this was ridiculous! She hoped Jonas showed up soon with her pants. She needed lunch!

Was working one of aid stations on an Ultra Marathon today. All four of the women running the 100km race looked like the girls above... perhaps something to add to the Pixie's skill package.

A friend of mine did that. She usually described herself as having the anatomical definition of an eleven year old boy

We already have an ultramarathon runner in the group

Back to the lever actions. Are we getting ready to begin a journey? Seeing references to names I remember from the past. Take care of Petra and get those radios into the vehicles. Grizzly has a 357 Marlin lever action to 10mm you may be interested in.

Preparations Continue

The crew was subdued at lunch. Everyone wasn’t sure why, though. Where each thought there should eb an air of excitement with having acquired so many of the things they needed for their trip, or exodus as Sofia had taken to referring to it.

Everyone was using the good food as an excuse to avid talking. Chili over spaghetti noodle was good, filling and hot, a big plus with the wet cold seeping into their bones anytime they were working in the barn. Before long, the plates were empty and Jennifer and Amber were cleaning stuff up while the rest went to the barn.

Silas was showing Petra where they stacked stuff from the trucks and trailers.

“We got the tanks over here, the L tanks and the tool boxes that go with them stacked together and all the fittings, hoses and the boxes from the trailer against the freezers over there.” Silas was pointing as he talked.

Petra started making calculations in her head, trying to remember her plans when she picked them the other day.

“If you tell us what we can do to help, we can start moving things, running things or whatever else you need done.” Jonas said for the group standing around Petra.

Petra stood there a moment. Realizing they were all waiting for her input, she decided to start laying out some things for them to do.

“If a couple of you could swap out the tires, I have some stuff to do under the hood. Then I can finish up the plumbing under the truck.”

Sofia saw Petra was starting to feel overwhelmed by the amount of work she saw before her.

“OK, Petra, but before you get head down on fixing your truck, why don’t you and I look inside your new trailer so you can tell me what I can do to help you get it ready how you want.”

She really wanted to help Petra. She knew the kid needed it. She was feeling cut adrift, she could see it in her eyes. She dropped her arm across Petra’s shoulders and steered her towards the trailer.

Work and Progress Never End

Petra was working hard, but she enjoyed it. It was a new experience for her. Instead of working and building some other person’s rig, this time, it was her own. The first hurdle was narrowing down what she wanted to do. This was where Sofia and Silas throwing her own words back at her helped.

Sofia kept at her about how she wanted her trailer set up and Silas kept asking her what she wanted the truck to do. Both of these were variants of her own constant questions when she was helping them restoring and building their campers.

Sofia helped her lay out the plan for her trailer. The ‘kiddie’ bunk over the main one would end up being her bed. This was a much smaller space and easier to heat. The main bed would be set up as a lounge area and the space under the bed would be for more batteries and storage.

Another of Sofia’s ideas was to raise the front dinette onto a platform about a foot above the floor. This would let them put drawers all across the front for more storage. When Petra asked about what they could do to keep the trailer warmer without running the heater all the time, Sofia just grinned and said she had it covered.

Silas had her lay out what all she needed wired in the truck. She had plenty for him to do. There were the feeds from the engine and the extra battery under the hood to the battery bank in the work bed, the generator, the welder the inverter, and the umbilical to the trailer. Petra wanted the truck to be able to charge the battery bank in the trailer, the generator to be able to feed the trailer, the trailer to be able to feed the truck and so on and so forth. There was enough to keep Silas busy while she worked on plumbing the second fuel tank and the transfer tanks in the bed of the truck. She figured by the time she was done, there was no problem for range in HER truck.

She was using Jonas to help lay out the transfer tanks in the Crew Cab since he would be the one driving it. Jennifer split her time between helping Ivar string radios and helping Sofia with whatever the secret squirrel stuff they were doing to Petra’s trailer. Jonas’ trailer was next in line for their attention.

Everyone had parts they were working on and a good roadmap of what they needed to do. After the trucks and camping trailers were fixed, it would be all hands on deck to get the remaining transfer tanks on the two cargo trailers they were taking. The finish line was in sight now that everyone was pulling together.

Time Catches Up

It was a week of hard grueling work. Fuel systems, lighting systems, electrical systems, practically rebuilding the suspensions of the trailers to make them sit right with the loads they would be carrying, weather-tight storage methods for the cargo trailers, it all had to be done and done well. Everyone knew they had to get it right, otherwise it could cost them resources or lives on the road north. Right now, they had the space and the resources to make these major upgrades and modifications. Better to take the time to think it through before they got to the middle of nowhere and they had to jury-rig a half-assed solution.

Petra was the expert for a lot of what they did. Silas or Ivar might come up with an idea or an issue needing solving, but it was usually Petra’s job to figure out a solution if it was mechanical. For a lot of this Petra was wracking her brain trying to remember everything she learned from Paige. Slowly but surely, it was all coming together.

It was towards the end of the week when Sofia finally let her into her own trailer. The transformation was amazing. Jennifer and Sofia did a big reveal to Petra. The inside of her trailer not only had the drawer system under the front dinette, the back lower bed now had a futon style wood frame sitting half the mattress up to make a backrest for a couch. The flat base of the bed now had hinged lids to give access without having to dismantle the new couch. The upper sleeping berth now had a quilted curtain to close off the entire bunk for privacy and warmth.

New double curtains covered the windows and sheets of fleece were secured onto large portions of the walls for more insulation. For the small kitchen area, there were wooden cabinet and drawer inserts to hold a set of dishes and cooking implements! Petra was blown away at everything Sofia and Jennifer did for her.

After Sofia and Jennifer showed Petra all the things they did, Jennifer wanted to show Petra what they did to her and her father’s trailer. Petra was caught up in Jennifer’s enthusiasm and went with her while Sofia told them she had to get back to making lunch.

Jennifer was showing Petra the double bunk bed set-ups they built in their trailer for more storage and privacy, complete with curtains and everything when they heard a loud noise outside, followed by screaming! It took Petra’s mind half a second before it came up with ‘gunshot’!

Getting close now. Invasion, putting down an animal, or stopping a looter? Whatever it is we need a quick way off this cliff!

I’ve known a few metal fabricators that could build anything from scrap metal, a welder, tape measure, and angle grinder. They usually grew up on a farm. Special people that are invaluable in many situations.

Thank you.

I don't know a farmer who can't weld! It ain't always pretty but is usually hellish strong.

Outside the Barn

Sofia was coming back to the barn to get Petra and Jennifer for lunch. Today was a pretty good day. They got a lot done and Petra seemed to like what they did for her with the trailer. All the work earlier on her own camper really paid off when it came time to work on Petra’s and the Jenson’s.

Sofia was halfway there when she felt a massive blow that took her legs out from under her, spinning her around and slamming her to the ground. Her brain had no idea what was going on. It was suddenly overwhelmed with pain like no other she had ever felt, tearing an animalistic scream of anguish and fury from her. She looked around, trying to see what was going on. Her throat was instantly raw in the dry winter air. She couldn’t seem to get her legs back under her. She looked down. The snow was turning pinkish-red.
