Lighter being taken at airport

Taking lighters at airports

My husband just called me from the Miami airport. He was told that all lighters are being confiscated and thrown away before boarding.

The person he is traveling with has a lighter that is expensive so she is mailing it home. She was able to get a mailer from a shop in the airport.

Any ideas why lighters would be taken?

(Speaking of smoking...visit allnative.com. We have ordered cigs from that site for several years. Good and cheap plus it helps support people.)

look why don't the airports and/or the airlines tell passengers what they cannot bring with them, rather than confiscating what used to be considered harmless items

Most lighters are probably butane lighters and they were never allowed on airplanes anyway.

So how are you supposed to smoke if you are so inclined? Do they have those little electric lighters like cars have? Zippo should file suit. The tobacco lobby should be up in arms!

I wonder just how ridiculus this is going to get before its over.

I guess it would all depend on who else was on the flight. Im thinking Swedish Bikini Team, or maybe Deb Mc.:D

On a serious note, something like a shoe lace would do wonders if you were trying to take a hostage. If you used it as a garrote around a flight attendant's neck, would do wonders to get passengers to do what you want them to do.:(

The following notice was just posted at work:

"AIRLINE TRAVELERS will be limited to one carry-on bag and one personal item such as a purse or briefcase on all flights, the FAA posted on their web site Monday. The limit was one of the recommendations of the DOT created airport security task force, or "rapid response team," that submitted its recommendations to DOT Secretary Norman Mineta last week. The tip sheet also said that automated check-in kiosks are no longer available. In addition, the FAA provided, for the first time, a detailed list of items that travelers cannot carry onto the airplane. In addition to knives and box cutters, prohibited items include straight razors, metal nail files and corkscrews. But nail clippers and safety razors (including disposable razors) are permitted, as are umbrellas that have been inspected, the FAA said."

Get the site or the whole list on here asap and I'm sure that more than one intrepit soul will be more than happy to point out to some nitwit at security that they are wrong about trying to stop them from taking a pair of nail clippers on a plane. I know I would(if I ever flew).
