lawn mower choke spring

My Father called this week about trouble with his mower. It is an 18 H.P. Murry with a Briggs engine. The engine was smoking and would shut off after it was run a while. It didn't want to start until it cooled down a while.

I went over and looked at it. I found the choke butterfly was not connected to anything and could move freely. A spring had either broken or just fallen off. This let the choke go partialy closed and caused the trouble. We wired the choke open and he finished mowing the yard. The spring was there to pull the choke open when the throttle was moved to running position.

We talked a while and it turned out the mower would start acting up when he was on a hillside. I guess the choke tended to close from the tilting of the tractor. He said it had been using more gas than normal. I am going to try to find a spring this weekend. I had not seen this happen before and thought it might be somthing to remember.

Thanks for the link. It turned out the choke return spring was a coil on the butterfly shaft. I didn't want to take the carb apart so I did a "Farm Fix" on it and rigged up an external spring.
