A hospital worker in Italy is under investigation for allegedly skipping out on work for 15 years while continuing to receive a salary, according to a report.

The unnamed man, nicknamed the "King of Absentees" by the Italian press, allegedly made 538,000 euros or around $647,000 in total after being assigned as a civil servant to the Pugliese Ciaccio hospital in Catanzaro, in the southern region of the country in 2005, BBC News reported, citing the Ansa news agency.

The 67-year-old worker and six managers at the hospital are under investigation by the police for fraud, abuse of office and extortion, which is part of a larger investigation into fraud in the public sector in the country.

He has also been accused of threatening the hospital's former director to keep her from reporting him, the BBC reported. After she retired, neither her replacement nor human resources noticed his absences, police reportedly said.

Missing work is a frequent problem in the public sector in the country, according to The Guardian.

An investigation into absenteeism in Italy found women using their husbands’ staff cards to clock them into work and others clocking before going canoeing, shopping or taking a nap, according to The Guardian.

They really take it to a new level in those European countries.

I thought the mob had the monopoly on "no show" jobs.

I have a customer that discovered he had an employee on payroll that hadn’t been there in 5 years. The guy was deployed to Afghanistan and my customer decided to pay him when he was deployed. However, he never came home and his wife kept cashing the checks

He cashed the biggest check he could. Nice of the employer not to notice. Sounds like he was KIA.

It's the European way. Might as well be France or Greece. Same deal.

And people wonder why Britain wanted to GTFO.

There was a guy where I worked that would go to work (in a cube farm) and leave his jacket on the hook in the cube and his car keys on the table. He would then either go home or go fishing. He was not caught for 5 or 6 months.

I knew a woman who took a 6 month FMLA sick leave and used the time to find herself a new job, which she started immediately, while continuing to collect pay from her old job.

I have heard-from a friend- that some in the military that have office jobs in large buildings would come in and open a newspaper put it on their desk along with half a cup of coffee and put their cap on the desk and leave.
Anyone that might come in would see the paper and cap and think that the occupant was somewhere in the building
