how much effort does it take to pull the water though the filter,

do you have suck on it real hard, or does pull up with little effort. get what Im going at here?

this is something that has me on the fence for all the straw style filters,

and what about when not in use, will it get a build up of bacteria after it sits a while,?
had a katadyn, turn smelly after sitting a month with left over water in it, ended up taking apart, soaking in bleach, the let dry in the sun,

depends upon their track record. I've used PUR (now Katadyn) hiker every summer for 10 years then bought another one. My friends and I tried a couple different brands in the mid 90s - they all clogged and hoses fell off. I have heard that the MSR ones are also very good - but never heard of renovo (which doesn't mean anything).

Cooter:

Effort- The first use will be harder to draw water through as the filter medium is dry and air lock can occur. If there is a lot of strain while sucking water through the filter then remove the filter from the water source and blow air though the filter briefly and then again proceed to suck water.
Not in use- We recommend when not in use any excess water should be blown out or shook out before letting air dry. Bacteria will not grow on the filter.
Cleaning- We recommend using a vinegar solution to disinfect the filter if there is any indication of smell or odor.

Safecastle is one company that cares about their image and customer service. I got mine ordered over the phone. There are apparently issues with Paypal not working right with them 100% of the time. They have a small staff so just leave a voice mail or email and they will get back with you.
