How Many Businesses Have Announced Closings or Layoffs Since Obama Won A Second Term?

Posted on November 8, 2012 at 9:29pm by Mike Opelka

Do elections have consequences? If you have been paying attention to the financial markets, you might think so. Wall Street has had two horrible days since President Obama won a second term.

However, stock prices are not the only thing taking a hit. It appears that the job market is also suffering. In the last 48 hours, the following major corporations have announced layoffs in America (links take you to news stories about the layoffs – with details from the companies):

• Energizer -

The St. Louis-based company said Thursday that it expects to shed about 1,500 employees. When finished, the restructuring should lead to $200 million in pretax yearly savings, Energizer said. It aims to have most of its restructuring steps finished by the end of September 2014.

• Westinghouse -

Westinghouse Anniston, the contractor responsible for shutting down Anniston’s chemical weapons incinerator, has reduced its workforce by another 50 employees.

• Research in Motion Limited -

Research in Motion Ltd., the maker of BlackBerry smartphones, laid off about 200 people at its U.S. headquarters in Irving on Wednesday, according to a source close to the company who did not want to be named.

• Lightyear Network Solutions -

More than one dozen employees at a Pikeville company lost their jobs this week. Officials with Lightyear Network Solutions said they are consolidating offices in Louisville and Pikeville to save money.

• Providence Journal -

.

The Providence Journal Co. laid off 23 full-time workers Wednesday as part of a cost-cutting effort, including 16 members of the Providence Newspaper Guild and 7 non-union employees.

• Hawker Beechcraft -

The company says 240 employees will lose their jobs with the closing of Hawker Beechcraft Services facilities in Little Rock, Ark.; Mesa, Ariz.; and San Antonio, Texas.

• Boeing (30% of their management staff) -

Boeing Co. said Wednesday it plans to employ 30% fewer executives at its Boeing Defense, Space & Security unit by the end of 2012 compared to 2010 levels.

• CVPH Medical Center -

CVPH Medical Center has handed pink slips to 17 employees. The layoffs — nine in management and eight hourly staffers — are part of an effort to “help bolster the hospital’s financial position in 2013 and beyond,” a press release said.

• US Cellular -

The move will result in 980 job cuts at U.S. Cellular, with 640 in the Chicago area, according to a spokeswoman. The cuts are slightly under 12 percent of the approximately 8,400 total employees U.S. Cellular had at the end of the third quarter.

• Momentive Performance Materials -

About 150 workers at Sistersville’s Momentive Performance Materials plant will be temporarily laid off later this month, officials said this week.

• Rocketdyne -

About 100 employees at Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, most of whom work in the San Fernando Valley, were laid off Wednesday in response to dwindling government spending on space exploration, the company said. The layoffs were effective immediately, and 75 percent of them came at the facilities on Canoga and De Soto avenues, which employ about 1,100 people. The company has six sites across the Valley.

• Brake Parts -

The leader of an automotive parts plant in Lincoln County has told state officials that there are plans to lay off 75 workers starting in late December…The layoffs are expected to start Dec. 28 and continue in the first quarter of 2013

• Vestas Wind Systems -

Vestas Wind Systems A/S (VWS) is seeking to sell a stake of as much as 20 percent and said it’s reducing headcount by 3,000 to raise the staff cuts by the biggest wind turbine maker to almost a third over two years.

• Husqvarna -

Husqvarna AB (HUSQB), the world’s biggest maker of powered garden tools, plans to cut about 600 jobs in a move that will save 220 million kronor ($33 million) a year by 2014.

• Center for Hospice New York -

The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care plans to temporarily lay off as many as 40 employees next year as it embarks on a major renovation of the inpatient unit at its Cheektowaga campus.

• Bristol-Meyers -

Bristol-Myers Squibb is following up its lackluster third-quarter results with almost 480 layoffs. As Pharmalot reports, the company notified the New Jersey government that it would scale back in Plainsboro, which means the cuts will hit its sales operations.

• OCE North America -

Trumbull printer- and scanning-equipment provider Oce North America, Inc. will lay off 135 workers in three Connecticut communities, including East Hartford, according to its notice with the state Labor Department.

• Darden Restaurants -

The company, which was among those who had received an Obamacare waiver in the past, is looking to limit workers to 28 hours per week. A full time employee that is required to have health insurance (lest the employer pay a fine) works 30 hours per week, as defined by the Obamacare law.

• West Ridge Mine -

In its statement, UtahAmerican Energy blames the Obama administration for instituting policies that will close down “204 American coal-fired power plants by 2014″ and for drastically reducing the market for coal.

• United Blood Services Gulf -

United Blood Services Gulf South region, the non-profit blood service provider for much of south Louisiana and Mississippi, will lay off approximately 10 percent of its workforce. It was a hard decision to make according to Susan Begnaud, Regional Center Director for the Gulf South region.

A layoff is tough enough for employees to deal with, imagine hearing the crushing news that your office is shutting down just before Thanksgiving and Christmas… Here are some of the business closings that were announced in just the past two days:
•Caterpillar Inc. will close its plant in Owatonna Minn.
•Mount Pleasant’s Albrecht Sentry Foods
•The Target store at Manassas Mall Va.

Energizer to cut more than 10 percent of workforce

Fair use
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/energ...RhaWQDBHBzdGNhdANob21lBHB0A3NlY3Rpb25z;_ylv=3

By Jessica Wohl | Reuters – 12 hours ago.

(Reuters) - Energizer Holdings Inc said on Thursday that it would cut more than 10 percent of its workforce, or about 1,500 people, as it tries to rev up results in its battery business.

A restructuring at the company, which also makes Schick razors, was in the works for months. In September, Energizer said it planned to cut jobs and expenses but until Thursday it had not disclosed details of the plan.

Don't forget the many small businesses which are now destroyed in the NY Metro area from the Hurricane who had to lay off their employees because they will never recover from the damage.

And don't forget the many small businesses which are now destroyed thanks to Obamacare. Seventy percent of new job creation comes from small business.

That amazing stat has staggering inverse implications as well.

Earlier today, Twitchy related some heartbreaking stories of small business owners laying off workers to avoid the economic impact of the Obamacare tax that isn’t a tax. Comedian Jon Lovitz, a small business owner himself, was no barrel of laughs either as his timeline filled with stories of impending downsizing. So, what about those big corporations? Boeing’s defense division announced yesterday it would cut 30 percent of management staff, and the company was not alone, we’re learning.

Kids report small business owners in small towns very gloomy, some feel they will be forced out when O/Care really kicks in.

Any business that has under a few hundred to a thousand employees plus or minus to 50 employees will restructure or are in the war rooms making plans to either sell out, retire, or down size to 50 employees or less. As with any business plans the object is to make a profit and mandated employee liability is now at a all time high and is threatening the low profit margins already on the books.

IMHO, every small privately owned business that has employees, should lay off all of their employees today.

This just makes me sick to my stomach! My daughter in law works for a state University in California. She said they have already begun to get emails praising the tax hikes and talking about expanding and hiring more employees! It doesn't take much to see where the private sector jobs are going. Gov't, gov't and more gov't!! All gov't, all the time.

I should invest what little I can into places like these...

http://www.laborfinders.com/frmLaborFindSavesYou.aspx

Our Team Saves You Time and Money By:

Advertising and recruiting for employees
Not paying employees during slow periods
Assuming all payroll and administrative costs
Providing social security and unemployment
Processing federal and state taxes
Providing Workers’ Compensation
Eliminating sick time, hospitalization, life insurance

That way at least business owners need no FEINs and at least know what their liability is going to be. Of course all of this just makes it worse for the employee with even lower pay and the employer with getting the jobs done correctly and timely hurting the clients and product or service quality.

Just got back from a drive into town. Another owner of a mechanical/machinery operation has announced they're going Galt. Only three vehicles left in the company parking lot today.

Usually there were 50 to 100 cars there every weekday. I heard alot of shocked people talking about the impact of that operation shutting down. It's going to have ripple effect throughout the local economy.

More over, what are the companies this firm supplied going to do? They produced electronic equipment enclosures machined out of solid aluminum for use in aircraft electronics.

Companies that do that do not grow on trees. Two local companies that produce aircraft electronics for the military and commerical markets are about to take a major hit.

Both had outsourced their enclosure production to this firm so they could reduce costs by getting rid of their high-paid, union machinists. Now twenty to thirty years later they have no way to bring that work back in-house. They are screwed.

And this is doubtless going on all over the country as small feeder businesses that support major firms close up shop. It won't take many such closures by their suppliers and the majors will have to shut down.

We are seeing InfoMagic's death spiral beginning to take place right before out eyes. Hang on tight folks, the ride is gonna get a bit rough real soon.

I wish people would refrain from insisting that oboingo "won" "re-election". He won nothing, he is where he is due to blatant fraud and lies, it was not an election, it was an appointment. It worked the first time, shame on them. It worked the second time, shame on us.

These business closings play right into TPTB's hands, soon nothing will be made here, nothing at all, it will look like rural Rwanda, no stores, no money, nothing. In one fell swoop, these satanists have forced the US into global governance as we will need to beg, borrow and steal every single item we possess from other nations, every crumb and rag we have will be through the largess of others. Is it a coincidence the UN officially stated they want a world Capitol in the middle east, just one day after the mock elections were held here? I don't think so.

Ending private enterprise ends any hope of retaining our Republic, it puts all the money, power and control in the hands of the despots who arranged for it to happen, who created the NDAA, who are shutting down coal and oil, who are locking up public lands, who have the power to raise taxes, and will, per the UN's Agenda 21 do so, so all land and property will belong to the state. We officially become chattel, slaves, to be disposed of as they see fit.

Mao, stalin, hitler, et al will look tame in comparison to what this regime will do-remember that when you must defend yourself and your families from the demons in power, but remember also, to die is gain. I have seen photos of what dictators do to people under their complete control, to die fighting for your freedom is a mercy from God if satan wins that war. One thing I hope for is that those who support such a regime get to see and fully understand their stupidity and role in what is to come, to own it.

We should not be afraid, we should all be mad as hell, and be ready for their next move.

Wait until they realize that they won't be getting the money they think because:

1 - tax revenues are going to fall, not expand.
2 - the government is going to need that money to pay for their promised entitlements.

Somewhat related ... FYI, the prepper biz continues a decade-long, strong upward trend and in the last couple of years a crazy number of new companies have sprouted up in this niche (as well as older larger companies jumping in too). But over the last couple of months, and especially the last couple of weeks I am suddenly seeing a LOT of consolidation ... with larger operations swallowing smaller companies (offers that can't be refused).

That is going to have an impact on not only jobs, but prices and other things.

I don't think that a lot of these layoffs are due to ObamaCare. I think they are related to the tax increases and the slowdown that businesses know will come afterward. There are some ObamaCare cutbacks that will happen but I think that the immediate cutbacks are related to tax increases and mandated budget cuts. These companies also know that we are out of money again and resolving that issue is no longer as easy as just raising the debt ceiling. Legislation was put in place last August that demands significant change in order to raise the ceiling. I think that will be a serious problem that might not be able to be resolved without a significant crisis. The more businesses that join the layoffs, the less revenue they will be able to receive due to decreased income. This problem, to me, appears to be without a logical resolution.

Anyone else see a way out of this?

Flipper, that's an excellent post.

Today, I got in my car and went out to run errands, desperate to get out of this "funk" that has enveloped me. I've been mourning my country, and I have nothing to compare this feeling with.

For 20 years, I've owned a small business, but this administration is hell-bent on destroying small business.

IMHO, it's over. I've written so many letters to so many congressmen but I am spent. I don't really know what to do next. Except pray. And I'm a little worn down on that score, too. Prior to this election, I'd been praying quite a bit, asking God to protect our country from evil and to keep us on the right path.

I'm just not sure what's left to do.

Understand that so long as BOTH SIDES of the Oath of Fealty are upheld, it's a damn good system.
The whole denigration of "Noblesse Oblige" is due to some nobles not upholding their side of the Fealty Oath. Because when the Noble side gets upheld, it puts a REAL BURDEN on the Noble to do right by the peson who swore the oath WITH him...And yes, in proper usage it is an oath sworn SIMULTANEOUSLY by both Noble and subordinate.

That is one of the reasons I started collecting machine tools.

Over on AR15.com there is one guy discussing buying shipping containers, buying up the equipment at closing machine operations, packing that gear in cosmoline and putting it into the containers for long-term storage. Sounds like a plan, if you've got a safe, dry place for those containers.

Of course, I expect that there will be alot of bidding for good machine tools from folks in the devloping world out looking for bargain-priced used equipment.

It would be interesting for a country like Canada to take note of layoffs and company closings and see what products they make......then when there is a need, those products could be produced in a nearby place north of the 49th parallel. Many companies especially in Alberta are always looking for tools and technicals to use in their industries rather than buy in Europe or elsewhere.

I think it would either cause an aneurism or chuckle for you to read the quote:

[from a facebook user]

"Don't you guys think there should be "common law citizens"? F*ck this watered down "path to citizenship", "two-year work visa" bullshit. If a child is brought here before the age of twelve, and she grows up American, goes through our schools, stays out of trouble, works our crappy jobs, starts her own business, or works in her family's business, has American kids, SHE'S A F*CKING AMERICAN, BECAUSE SHE FORGED HER OWN "PATH TO CITIZENSHIP", SO GIVE HER THE F*CKING PAPERS!"

and she follows it up with:

"In feudal society, if you conducted yourself like a citizen, you were recognized with an Award of Arms, which meant that you were accepted, and allowed to bear arms in the barony. That's the way it should be. That's justice. Of course, we don't really need to bear arms, but you get the point. It's the documents that are important. And people who prove themselves worthy should get their documents, even if they didn't take the prescribed, beaurocratic path.
These conservatards are supposedly all about small government, until beaurocracy can be used to enforce their xenophobia.
The f*cking conservatar"

Please note she is an American born white woman and I'm betting you can guess her voter allegiance.

I remember learning about feudal society in fourth grade. It was a prosperous time of famine, plague, war, and owning people. Good times, I tell you. Free contraception for everyone and firsthand lessons on rape culture. /sarcasm

a ton of small family run business's will close or have already. This thing is going to get very bad. I look for the local grocery store to close, and a few other things, they are small and probably can't afford all th new taxes so they will be closing.

The "chain reaction" is horrible. Eventually this will affect Boeing - Commercial division.

If Boeing can't get parts for their production lines, like engines, landing gear, avionics, etc, it will indeed be an economic horror with horrifying societal ramifications for Boeing's curtomers and employees. Multiply that by every industry that has any sort of supply chain and you'll realize the entire economy is going to suffer from these closures.

Unintended consequences, folks. Unintended consequences to lead us from Heinlen's world into the land of InfoMagic.
