I need help! Does anyone have experience with painted ceramics? I have a vintage ceramic Christmas tree that belonged to my boys paternal grandmother who passed away this past November. My boys loved it so much when they were small. It was moved to the outside shed for some reason and went unloved for quite awhile. I want to bring it back to life so it can be loved again. I found a new light kit, star and "bulbs" for it on Amazon.
It used to be bright and shiny but had a coat of dust from the outside shed on it for years that evidently ruined its shiny finish. I have tried Windex, soaking it in Dawn and water, and Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. Nothing will bring back its shine...except for when I scratch it with my fingernail.
Would there have been a glossy paint applied prior to its firing that could have been ruined by the years of outside elements and dust? Is there a way to get that top coat of whatever off without ruining the paint? Can I just spray it with a shiny clear coat? I don't know enough about ceramics to know if a clear coat would bind to the existing paint.
I attached a couple of pics, after I did as much to it as I can, to show the dullness that I am trying to get rid of. There is also attached a stock pic I found online of a similar one just for reference. Many of you probably have or have had one of these. It's nothing expensive but the memories make it priceless to me and my grown boys.
Any advice would be a blessing and greatly appreciated! TIA!
