Hoosier Gardener
Where did the summer go? Now that September is almost here, my garden thoughts are turning to planting our fall garden. So far, I have planted lettuce and sugar snap peas. The peas are about three inches high. The lettuce probably won't sprout until the days and nights turn a little cooler and we get some rain. I worked some compost into one of the raised beds and planted the lettuce there. Most years, lettuce planted now grows more slowly and will last until Thanksgiving or later. In the raised bed, I can put on a cover and get a few extra weeks of lettuce.
Our last patch of sweet corn is nearly ready to pick. As soon as it is finished, I will pull out all the corn plants and work some compost into that spot. It will become a turnip, cabbage, and kale bed to give us some produce well into late fall. Kale quite often will over-winter and give us a late winter/early spring crop as soon as the days start warming up a little.
What are you all planting this fall where you live?
